What are some MUST READ superhero comic books?
>>562800364
To be more specific, comic book SERIES*
Watchmen
The Dark Knight Returns
Batman The Court of Owls
The Long Halloween
Spiderman, look online for where to start. I'd do the most recent Spiderman #1. It's specifically there as a good place to start. Plus, it's the god damn spiderman.
And I'd check out the new Star Lord comics.
>>562800989
The Star Lord series seems to have a good look right now, but I like what has been going on the the Guardians of the Galaxy series more
>>562800364
I would look up the dc flashpoint series. I have heard that the flash is a very underated superhero. I haven't read any of them, but they were highly recommended from some comic book friends.
Also batman: hush series. Pretty fucking incredible. Great writing and plot
>>562800767
Will add them to list for sure
>>562800779
Fuck, my dad still has his Spiderman issue in mint condition I think. I don't remember which one it was though, I need to look for it. It was a white cover and I remember seeing a huge blob type of thing and on one of the pages he landed in this weird room with a bunch of naked chicks for a few moments.
>>562800989
I don't think anyone should read anything by Sam Dog Fucker Humphries
The 2006-2011 cosmic books are a must
>>562800364
Gotham Central. It sometimes has Batman in it, so it counts.
Superior Foes of Spiderman
>>562800364
Batman: Year 100
>>562800364
House of M, very entertaining, it will help you a lot to get you into marvel comics
>>562800364
Why limit yourself to superheroes?
>>562802728
I agree here. In my opinion, the best comic series that you can read are usually not based around superheros.
>>562801738
http://marvel.wikia.com/Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1
Any of these?
>>562800364
Incorruptible. It's basically if superman went psycho and decided to kill everyone on earth.
>>562801465
The comics generated from the flashpoint series actually made me like DC comics for the first time.
It was where Batman was flipped and it was Bruce being killed that night, so Bruce Wayne's father became batman and his mother the Joker.
>>562803058
sorry. Irredeemable. Incorruptible is a sister comic that shows a super villain having to be good in the face of psycho superman.
>>562800364
>Watchmen
>Dark Knight Returns

Im getting the monthlys of Black Science and Low right now too. just go to your local shop and pick 2 issues from 3 major labels, you'll find something cool
>>562801802
agreed
>>562803391
First comic series I read was Powers but the first I owned was Blackest Night/Brightest Day and the amazing story got me into comics. Wednesday is best day now
>>562802940
>pic related
>>562803009
Weird, I could not find it in there. I probably looked to fast though, I'll give it one more try. I know it's earlier than at least 2002 because that's around the time I remember him showing it to me.
>>562802728
>>562802940
I'm open to supervillains and anything else as well! My personal favorites are Venom and Carnage
>>562800364
Pretty much anything with thannos in it
Plot is soo thick you wont even know whats happening until the final chapter
also he is a villain that always loses
>>562800364
The Invisibles is the only must read comic ever.
/thread
>>562803534
>The outcome of this is the hands of Bendis
I already expected to hate it, but spelling Nova's name wrong and Bendis himself not knowing when #18 comes out just make it even worse
>>562804067
Sin City is a must read. No questions about it.
>>562804231
i have yet to pick up a bendis comic, peter is dead to me and i can live with that
>>562804067
Venom's not a villain anymore. Agent Venom was great and you should read that. Venom's only showing up in one book right now, and the writer even said he hates him.
There's not that many good stories out there with Carnage, since a lot of time he devolves into murder porn
>>562804562
Be on /co/ August 26 and 27th if you want to see just how bad Bendis can be.
He'll make SSM 9 look like nothing
>>562800364
The Authority - the ones by Warren Ellis and Mark Millar
Stormwatch: Team Achilles
Planetary
Flex Mentallo
Final Crisis
All-Star Superman
Watchmen
Supreme - the ones by Alan Moore
the first 25 issues of Savage Dragon
Johnathan Hickman's issues of New Avengers and Fantastic Four
Mark Millar's run on the Ultimates

Star Brand
>>562804656
That's a damn shame! Venom and Carnage had one of my favorite supervillain designs and is one of the reasons I got into drawing.
>>562804550
How are the movies in relation to the comics? I have yet to see the first one and I know a second one is coming out. Barely heard about that one when I was watching tv at a hookah bar with my mates yesterday.
>>562804136
I agree 100% except for one small detail you seem to have overlooked
>superhero
>>562800364
why are there two goddamn wolverines and like 70 spidermans?
Also She-Hulk is looking fine as fuck
>>562805253
Added to list, thank you!
>>562805548
>Also She-Hulk is looking fine as fuck
mah nigga.
always had a crush on her.
>>562805417
The comics are more graphic, and delv deeper into the story than the firsy movie did.
>>562800364
all this DC in this thread
>implying Batman isn't their only good thing
>>562805671
no problemo. those are mostly my personal favorites, but I can dig through my stacks for some more semi-essential shit if you want.
>>562805732
wat?
Superman: Red Son. I'm a diehard Marvel fan and I fucking LOVED this comic. Very creative re-imagining.
>>562805434
Well they're kind of superheroes. They travel through time, fight alien Gods, are psychic or do magic. It pretty much fits the bill, besides, it's the best comic series hands down so fuck it. Blew my mind the first time I read it and some it really sticks with you.
>>562805417
Flash Thompson is the best host Venom's ever had. He works much better as a hero
Carnage just isn't much of a character. He'll be in AXIS, which starts in October and is being written by Remender, the best writer Venom ever had
>>562804067
Not every comic is about superheroes or villains.
>>562806534
>They travel through time, fight alien Gods, are psychic or do magic.
Don't be silly, by that definition we're all superheroes.
>>562805889
Whatever you want homie
>>562806756
I will keep my out for that for sure
>>562806948
>anything else as well
>>562807213
Scalped
Transmetropolitan
Sex Criminals
Preacher
Blacksad
Criminal
DMZ
>>562807205
Such a good comic. Going to have to read it again. Creepy as fuck at points though. Different level.
>>562803914
sauce?
The Metabarons
Read it if you dare OP, thats all I'm sayin
>>562807947
>>562800364
Old Man Logan
>THREAD FUCKING OVER
>>562807213
ok doke.
Grant Morrison's New X-Men
Batman - The Killing Joke
Wanted
The Secret History (it hasn't all been translated into english though, so brace yourself for the possibility that it won't be before you start)
The Filth
Garth Ennis' Punisher runs - the first one is funny, the second one is grim as fuck, but they both work really well
Preacher
Agent X
The One
Grant Morrison's Animal Man
Authority,The - Magnificent Kevin,The
Marshal Law & Pinhead
Hard Boiled
Black Summer
No Hero
The Boys
Brit
The Punisher vs Bullseye
>>562808473
Fuck. Yes. Actually I think I'm gonna go read that again right after this thread.
>>562808476
cool beans. does he talk to himself like that the whole time?
Conspiracy (marvel)
Ruins (marvel)
Sleeper
Miracleman
Doc Frankenstein
Transmetropolitan
Fury MAX
Global Frequency
God Somewhere,A
Lex Luthor - Man of Steel
Marvel Boy
Incredible Hulk 340-346. The "Ground Zero" storyline. The Hulk is gray and mean and an interesting character. All of Peter David's run is worth a read in truth, but this was the story that got people to notice how good his Hulk was.
I'd also recommend Fantastic Four 251-256 for a great sample of John Byrne's run. Negative Zone stuff. Expand to issues 249-258 for a few more good comics.
Mysterius the Unfathomable
Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Neonomicon
Pryde and Wisdom
Simon Spector
Frank Ironwine
Twilight Guardian
>>562809180
Pretty much, yeah. He's a pretty minor character though in what is a ten volume series, but one of the things that makes Scalped kind of a masterpiece is the sheer number of interesting characters.
ok that's all i can think of
maybe Squadron Supreme.
Seeing a lot of comic shit tonight take it to >>>/co/ nigger
>>562812224
fuck off faggot, it's random.
the only shit that doesn't belong here is the shit that is specifically banned here.
>>562812224
/co/ is just Korra, Homestuck and Frozen General.
>must read
>post deadpool
just stay far away from DC and Marvel unless is morrigod or moore.
in addition to what everyone has posted,
Kingdom Come
Red Son (about what would happen if Superman's babyship landed in the USSR; not canon but a damn good read)
Sandman (this one may bore the hell out of you, though, not very action-oriented)
Y: The Last Man (another one not very action-oriented)
also, just a gentle reminder that they're called comic books, and that the only people who call them 'graphic novels' are hipsters who should be punched
>>562802940
In that case, the Hellblazer series.
It really kicks ass, unlike this "all audiences approved" crap.
Nextwave
Livewires
Empowered.
ok i think that's it.
>>562812914
>Kingdom Come
shit i completely forgot about that one too.
>>562812914
>graphic novels
i don't think it's really pretentious to try to get people to use a name that is really more accurate.
>>562812914
that being said, i think a better name would be "illustrated literature".
>>562801174
star lord is the leader of the guardians kek
>>562812914
Comic books: Single issues
Trade Paperbacks: Collected issues of comic books into a single book
Graphic novel: Original story that was never printed in single issues and written specifically to be printed in this format.
>>562812914
except for issues of superhero comics, which should be called "spandex faggot pamphlets".
for accuracy.
>>562815248
>Graphic novel: Original story that was never printed in single issues and written specifically to be printed in this format.
no that's an OGN. Original Graphic Novel.
Graphic Novel can be either an OGN or a TPB.
If you are going to be pedantic, be pedantic correctly.
>>562815631
>Graphic Novel can be either an OGN or a TPB
Oh fuck off. TPBs are TPB. They are not self-contained novel-type stories.
No one says "original graphic novel". You're an idiot.
>>562816035
>They are not self-contained novel-type stories.
They weren't until most comic stores closed and writers started deliberately writing for the trade.
Step your game up and live in the now.

Definition
The term is not strictly defined, though one broad dictionary definition is "a fictional story that is presented in comic-strip format and presented as a book."[1] In the publishing trade, the term is sometimes extended to material that would not be considered a novel if produced in another medium. Collections of comic books that do not form a continuous story, anthologies or collections of loosely related pieces, and even non-fiction are stocked by libraries and bookstores as "graphic novels" (similar to the manner in which dramatic stories are included in "comic" books). It is also sometimes used to create a distinction between works created as stand-alone stories, in contrast to collections or compilations of a story arc from a comic book series published in book form.[2][3]
