I guess the keyword is escapism. Yesterday I started watching Aria the animation, only seen a few eps so far... it seems to be a slice of life show tho, nothing spectacular happens, just daily life stuff for some girls working in the gondola business in Neo-venezia, on the newly terraformed planet Aqua. The appeal isn't really the cutesyness of the girls themselves but the whole beautiful environment, the calmness and peace of it all... and it really rubs off and it puts your mind in a Zen state... when I leave the house after watching that stuff... I still have that peace in my mind, I think the cutesy friendly girl characters help to that goal as well tho. Just one of them little things that make it worthwhile you know.

By the way, it's a longshot, but has anyone come across an article (or has their own theory) exploring general harmonic trends in jap/weeaboo music and instrumentals, and explaining why we might like it to the point of exclusivity? i mean, my friends and i can agree on almost everything else and i respect their tastes. we just differ in this one area. am i really the faggot for liking this crap? are my musical tastes actually shit? why, all else being equal, will i prefer an eastern to a western song? i do have a few theories of my own but i wonder if anyone else thinks about this. the common answer is "taste is subjective and doesn't require justification", but it can't be completely arbitrary, right?

Personally I can't say I prefer weebtunes exclusively, appeal comes in many shapes, and depends on mood. If the tune is associated with an epic scene, or mayhap the lyrics hit the right spot a mediocre tune may turn brilliant.
Maybe one could make a study of sorts... find a few people who luv their weebtunes, make profiles and see if they have anything exclusively in common.

yea, i definitely think the language is part of it. in some ways it's actually a plus for me. maybe it's just me, but i never really..."understood" most lyrics, on both the levels of comprehension and meaning. i find it hard to discern the words sometimes because i'm only focused on the whole melody, and the ideas expressed by the lyrics themselves are usually only loosely connected and pretty abstract, reading more like poetry than a book. and for whatever reason, i've grown a little cynical toward these meanings as i hear the same kinds of patterns and rhetorical devices used in a lot of western music. foreign music alleviates this since i know i can't understand anything and instead regard the vocals as just another instrument. i don't have the chance to consider them as contrived and instead appreciate them only for how they sound (and i gotta say, i do think japanese sounds more mellifluous than english on the whole). if my friends don't have this kind of perspective on lyricism, i can see that being a significant point of difference between us
