anime struggles with that because it tends to follow stereotypes and archetypes for characters, such as tsundere, etc... . that makes it so that although the story might be moving or cool or whatever you wish, it rarely gets to the point where it transcends the plot and requires actual deep thought to be comprehended, as opposed to simply watching it and paying attention.

You can choose to look at something from face value or explore it further on your own, using evidence in the media to back up your own ideas. Eva made me think about what it means to be grown up, as Shinji throughout the show acted like a little selfish kid until the end, in which he realized he has to sacrifice to have adult relationships.
I agree with the relatability, but that's a very subjective area
something like Eva or Steins;Gate actually deconstruct these archetypes, and that's what makes them good. In the case of Asuka and Kurisu, they were explored further than "we're tough bitches" and were given reasons for their general dispositions, they were also given character-changing climaxes in which they transcend their typical character models

again, i'm not trying to be obscure or anything. in fact it's the opposite. as i stated previously it's so hard for anime to actually be deep, it's better to stick to something simple, that doesn't try to be deep but that also doesn't fall into every age-old cliche in the book.

i, for one, enjoyed FMA B, because although it isn't perfect and does have it's cliches, it doesn't try to be "2deep4u" but still develops nicely both it's characters and plot inside the universe. the characters have stories, motivations and they feel like actual individuals and not "side character 1", "love interst 1", etc... .

granted they don't feel brain-numbing levels of pain everyday, but pain from things such as intense hunger isn't something to laugh at, much less if it's every single day, and without prospect of anything better.

you could also argue that there are women who had more than 10 sons, which means more than 10 sessions of intense, lasting pain preceeded by 9 months of random bullshit. and the worst is they knew exactly what awaited them and yet kept going, kinda like how shinji should have expected horrible shit to keep happening after the first 2 times.

so all in all, shinji is still a pussy MC and if anything terrible things happening to his robot and him is the author's excuse to justify his character. he didn't need to be a stone-cold fucker or a badass, just slightly more believable.

yeah i also devoured manga like a beast. so much in fact that i decided to not even read stuff below 40 chapters because it wouldn't last even a day.
