I think the whole r/technology thing was over the Tesla posts. As I recall, I think the reason they went censoring crazy was actually because people wouldn't stop posting about Tesla for some reason. Seriously, everyday was another post about Tesla and circle-jerking it to high heaven. I'd agree there is a mix on both sites, but i think the humor of each site is actually geared for people of different levels of intelligence. Most of the smart people i know enjoy the darker/nonsensical humor thats easier to find on 4chan, rather than the OMG, reference to ____! type stuff on reddit.

I've been a 4chan frequent since 2005. I have this to say:

When I first stumbled upon 4chan, I was very confused. The layout was unintuitive, there were hundreds of inside jokes that I didn't understand, and every other thread was something relentlessly offensive--gore, harassment, or even CP every now and then.

Most people from the early years of 4chan can say that it was hard to get started. You couldn't figure out how to get to the rest of the threads, you couldn't find the content you were looking for, and you didn't know how replying and posting worked. Even when you found out how to post, you were abruptly sent back to the first page and forced to scour the board for your thread, and once you found it there were either comments ridiculing you or no comments at all.

There was a unique culture thriving here. What 4chan forced you to do was wade through piles of garbage that didn't make sense to you for months until you very slowly picked up the tricks and experience. This was what "lurk moar" was all about. Eventually you found out that putting "noko" in the email field would auto-find your post for you. You found out that your crumby content wasn't being bumped because people were "saging" you. You learned the diction. You learned how to Triforce and avoid the numerous wordfilters that were in place, because if you couldn't do these things, you were harassed by the other users and you would never get any genuine feedback on what you said.
