Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.
Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.
Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:

-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Looks pretty hideous but I set up my first fish tank. It's 5 gallons and I plan on putting a Betta in it. I dosed it with some chemical that supposed to kick start the cycle. About how long should I wait before going out and getting a Betta to put in?

Is this planted enough for a 10g?
I was thinking maybe some anacharis for the back to create a kind of wall
got rid of that hogswort, it started shedding needles and I was not having any of that
I replaced it with I admittedly don't know what that is in my back right corner
I have some mopani wood I'll probably introduce to soften the water and add some tannins for the tetras I plan to add eventually

Hey guys! I'm just starting to get into aquariums. I got like a 1.5 - 2 gal spherical tank, I forget the exact number, seems big enough, it could fit my new tiger oscar and a few alamo shrimp from a pet store by my house.
I was wondering how big tiger oscars get(I assume they grow to proper proportion of the tank like most fish) and if shrimps could crawl away out of the tank. They all disappeared. I thought they'd get caught in a filter so I didn't bother getting one so there's no chance they're stuck in the pump due to my foresight. Should I look under my tv? They might be seeking the warmth of the tv and my tank is resting on top of my tv.
Thanks!
>>
theoretically, safestart lets you add fish after 24 hours, but I don't know if I trust it
I would honestly tell you to cycle your tank properly first, and also get gravel that doesn't cause your eyes to water
>>
>>2465503
It's less of an instant cycle, more of a way to cycle your tank with fish in without them getting killed
>>
>>2465510
fish don't usually die from a fish-in cycle anyways.

so it's more of a way to give your money to a corporation for nothing of value
>>
>>2465513
>fish don't usually die from a fish-in cycle
nevermind the fact that your stupid bacteria supplement costs 5X what the fish did so you didn't save anything.
>>
>>2465513
It puts them under significant stress because they're swimming in increasingly poisonous water for a month.
If you care about the fish you'd use something like that to detoxify the ammonia or do a fishless cycle
>>
>>2465515
>It puts them under significant stress because they're swimming in increasingly poisonous water for a month
it doesn't because the bacteria you add die within 24 hours because of light or lack of ammonia/nitrite.

so your fish suffer through the full cycle anyways. The only one that feels better is you.
>>
>>2465517
I do it fishless because it's cheaper, faster and more humane.
Since you're a cheap asshole just put a raw shrimp in the filter and add fish a month later.
>>
>>2465518
we're not talking about what I do.

we're talking about how bacterial starters don't do anything.
>>
>>2465519
They do more than nothing. There's actually a decent amount of research into it.

It's mostly people of forums who do their own stuff.
It's still not worth the money since it doesn't do anything in the long term. It's mostly for people who are impatient and don't want their goldfish to die in a week but are okay with it dying by a year.

So I still got a loy of kinks to work out with the filtration, but fish have been added!

It's looking pretty getto at the moment, but I messed up on the sponge filter, so I got some different piping and am letting it cure agai.

Once that's ready and working, I'm going to get it in there and let it run alongside the cycled filter for a few days.

>that does nothing
The major reason why quick start bacteria do, "nothing" is because 90% of the bottles, bags, etc, are already dead. They are bottled, shipped, and sit on shelves for months. Regardless, bacteria can go dormant and the problem isn't what is in the bottle but how people use it. Most people just dose it straight into the water where it doesn't attach to much and dies in the water column. The proper way to do it is pour it directly onto your mechanical filtration in your filter where it binds to the media. The idea is that adding fish will provide a higher amount of ammonia than a fishless cycle would. The heavier you stock it the more efficiently it works. Fish cycle is a thing. Adding bacteria from a bottle (assuming it's alive) is essentially the same as adding filter media from an established tank. People who are just starting the hobby don't have that option. Just cause you don't like something doesn't mean it isn't real.

Also, r8 my new pico ~2g saltwater tank and my """heavily""" planted 3g w/ 3 female bettas & 1 female guppy.

So I neglected my tank for a little bit and shit is pretty dirty in there now. I want to clean off the glass really well and as well as wash out the gravel. I was thinking about removing the fish, plants, and other decor and re-doing it. How much water from the tank should I try to keep? Its a 20g

like 5-10 gallons at the most if you really want to

as long as you don't nuke your substrate and filter media the water doesn't really matter
>>
>>2466149
Define nuking the substrate, I was going to gravel vac the entire surface until the tank was practically empty. Filter media wise I was just going to clean my pre-filter sponge and leave the sponge in the filter it self alone. It's also pretty heavily stocked.
>>
>>2466152
if you're reusing the substrate just give it a rinse and don't boil or bake it or anything
>>
Can tetras and betta fish share a tank?
>>

oh really? thats something I might be interested in what little tetras will actually school with each other? I was considering doing neons with glowlights, but I was told they don't really school together
>>
>>2466006
what do you mean by this?
Will these plants really work so well I won't need a filter running at all? Should I just turn it off for a day like once or twice a week?
I am running root tabs if that makes a difference
>>
>>2465993
I got 5 mollies which are gold and black coloring-I'm not sure if that's a type or a mix, 6 black skirt tetra, and 3 female betta.

All is well so far, but I'm keeping an eye on them and preparing re-homing if I have too.
>>
>>2466168
Yea, but it has to be at least a ten gallon, and the betta can't be really aggressive.

I tried my tetras with three of my males, and only one male ignores them. The other two try to hunt them down and kill them.

tiny hermit crabs.. and hopefully some easy corals eventually
>>
>>2466139
You can do a 100% change. Hardly any bacteria lives in the water column. The majority of bacteria is stuck on your plants, in your filter, and buried under your gravel. Cleaning everything at once is never recommended. Should do a little at a time to prevent disturbing too much or removing too much beneficial bacteria. You may end up with more ammonia than your cleaned aquarium can handle leading to a spike. Try for a 50/50... do half your gravel and 50% WC... leave the filter alone and you can do that last after a week or so.
>>
>>2466296
Doing half the gravel would be kinda counter productive I feel like. If I were to simply gravel vacuum could I just do all of it at once? I do have flourish prime and stability on hand too.
>>
>>2466365
If you're going to completely clean the gravel then shit is going to get stirred no matter what you do. You can completely clean the gravel and do a 100% change to remove all the gross shit out. But you'd be killing off a lot of your bacteria. Your fish might survive and nothing will happen. Depends how hardy they are I guess. Just leave your filter alone for a while like maybe a month?

My crayfish is the biggest pussy in the world. I bought some nerite snails to help clean up the glass a bit, knowing full well they would probably end up as a snack for my buddy. How do you guys do water changes in the winter in terms of getting your replacement water the same temperature as the tank water before you put it in? Do you heat the replacement water on the stove until it's the same temp as the tank?
>>

your house probably has a water heater which can deliver hot or even warm water directly to your faucet.

by taking advantage of this marvelous innovation of the industrial era you can conveniently heat your aquarium water without ever going near that dangerous and nasty stove.
>>
the dimensions are 2ft by 4ft by like 15 inchs but the glass is about an inch thick. I got it at some church id like to do a fresh water tank that doesn't require much maintenance, been looking into self sustaining tanks.

my experience is almost none :D so all this cycle junks new but i understand im just gonna have plants for like 2 months...if what i reads right.
My folks have a really dirty turtle to speed it up maybe but all the cycle stuff seems complicated so i might just let it cycle with a lil fish food idk

The hole in the side of his face is concerning but seems to be healing ok. It's not growing any bigger and the surrounding area is not white and mucusy. He's also been eating again. Got myself 8 neon rainbowfish yesterday for my horribly understocked 55.

Help, are my neon tetras bullying each other or is it normal behavior?

I got 6 neons in a 10g. I have them for a little more than a week. They always chased each other a little bit, but they didn't hurt each other and I know they did it to establish their hierarchy.
But today they started being much more aggressive. They've been chasing each other non-stop for like an hour or two now. I've noticed that they like to get under each other and "attack" from bellow. It doesn't really look like they are bitting each other though, thankfully. It's more like they want to rub on each other, but I can't easily tell. They zoom around the tank chasing each other and then they get psychical if they manage to corner their "victim." Sometimes the chasing involves more than two fish.
I saw online that this could be mating behavior. Could it be?
Thankfully, none of them have lost any color to signify stress and they don't seem to have any damaged fins. They haven't lost their appetite either, because they will nibble at a flake on the surface if they get a break from the chasing. And while they are all over the place, hardly schooling, they do get into a group if they get scared or something. So I guess that's a good sign?
I changed their food today from crushed up mini wafers to flakes, and soon after I fed them, I noticed the chasing. Is that related?
Also, as I understand, neons will start mating if the temperature drops, however the water is actually hotter today by 1 degree Celsius. Another thing I've heard is that if you want your neons breeding, you gotta simulate moonlight by getting a blue LED at night or something. I've recently started putting a piece of thin blue paper under their light for a few minutes at night before turning off the light completely, because they would freak out if it went completely dark immediately. Related?
I don't have a complete test kit, just a nitrites one, but they are at zero.
Any thoughts?

I have 6 neons in a 20g and they do the same thing mostly. I never interpreted the behavior as bullying. It's just general shoaling shenanigans and is totally normal. Also, my neons freak out when i turn the light off too. Totally normal. They all do that. I don't have any experience breeding them so can't help you there, but i have read you're supposed to take a pair and put them in a breeding tank, then keep it dark for a day or so, then do a 50% water change and slowly increase light. There's a lot of info out there about it.
>>
>>2467574
The fighting has ceased for now except for the occasional playful chasing. I guess I freaked out a bit since it's the first time they got so aggressive and consistent with it.
As for taking a pair and putting them in a breeding tank, keeping it dark etc stuff, that's definitely how you successfully breed for fry, but I imagine that the fish will get into a breeding mode regardless, if they feel like it. Even if they don't end up spawning fry they might still try to go for some action, right? Kinda like how dogs will try to hump furniture and people even if that doesn't do anything, I imagine.

My original question was about the UV light in my filter. I'll just turn it off for a few days so the bacteria can colonize.
>>
>>2467714
yes, your question has been answered.
nitrifying bacteria were introduced to your filter before you filled it with water, and unless you used chlorinated water they're still there.

how do you think tanks cycle? If the water is chlorinated it has no bacteria in it. Where does that bacteria come from?

I mean aside from retards like you that probably buy it in bottles, where do you suppose nitrifying bacteria come from? Does God put them in your filter?
>>
>>2467716
Since it was brand new, I washed it out with hot water from the tap. I set it up and the next thing that was in it was water from the aquarium. My aquarium already was cycled, and I was curious about the bacteria entering the filter when the UV is on. I added a bottle of bacteria months ago when I first started the aquarium, way before I got the canister filter. I'm going to turn off the UV light and squeeze one of my sponge filters next to the intake. Hopefully that will introduce bacteria to the new filter.
>>

When you have a long tank (4 foot), and you have a filter on one side of it, does it get enough circulation going to reach the other side of the tank?

I was trying to make a sponge filter, but it isn't working well. I wanted to use an extending pipe to lead th output water down to the other side of the tank, but I can bare get a trickle from it with juat the basic set up.

So I do have a regular store bought filter meant for a 20-30 gallon tank that I'm thinking of using, and I can actually just put that in the middle of the tank maybe.

I only have about 30 gallons in the tank and two amall schools, plus a bunch of live plants and pothos, so I can't imagine the water getting too toxic, but I'm concerned about the circulation.

Especially because I have three bettas as well, and can't have the flow be too strong.

UV sterilizes flow from the water column, it's mounted underwater in a pipe.

It kills bacteria on the first pass, that's what it was designed and invented for. It may also kill algae if the flow is slow enough or the alga passes the lamp repeatedly. Likewise it can kill other larger organisms such as microscopic animals and such, but this also requires either slowing the flow, increasing the light dose, or using multiple passes.

UV kills bacteria in the water column. It might or might not kill algae depending how you set it up.

Yeah I usually try not to but the issue is that if the rot reaches the base of the tail the fish dies. And this stuff is moving really fast so I didn't want to chance anything.
>>
>>2467816
They're adapted to it. It's like how close to the surface algae is green, because it has adapted to take in red and blue light, reflecting the green, while algae living at greater depth is red, because it has adapted to take in blue and green light instead, since these are more energetic and penetrate water better. The reason surface algae doesn't take in green light is because adapting its photosynthesis to do so would be a waste of resources compared to the extra energy. Our eyes are adapted to hunt during daylight, during which red, green and blue are sufficient colours. Night-time predators adapt to see RGB less well, but in return see any light better, giving them good grayscale vision without sunlight. Snakes are ambush predators, so they don't need vision as much. They instead rely on vibrations, and special "nostrils" modified to detect infrared, letting them basically smell heat.

why do some people not like carbon filters? i'm a beginner and my aquarium came with a filter system/pump and carbon filters. what's the pros and cons of those, and what's the best filter medium?

i've seen a lot of videos where they just use sponges and scrub pads from the grocery store
>>
>>2468066
There's a lot of science behind aquariums, but people really over complicate how easy it is to actually take care of freshwater aquariums. Saltwater is a bit more complicated if you're planning on keeping any decent fish. But even then it's just more time spent.
>>
>>2468128
If you don't have any live plants you're fine using it. It mostly leeches stuff out of the water that algae would use, but it stops after a while and you have to replace it. What type of filter do you have? A lot of those videos you've been watching are correct. The only necessary filtration you need is mechanical. A sponge or sponge-type media that catches particles in the water.

>>
>>2468178
depends. You really need the lighting and space to show it off. Also make sure you go rimless. I have a starphire with rims and it doesn't look all that amazing.

but under good lights they're very nice. Experienced aquarists will admire your taste and pocketbook. Non-aquarists will just think you have a particularly nice looking tank.

also kinda depends how deep your pockets are. If buying one means you won't have any cheese on your macaroni this year then it's not really worth it. If the price doesn't bother you then hell yes, they're very nice.
>>
>>2468146
>The only necessary filtration you need is biological.

FTFY.

It's just that mechanical tends to also double as extra biological (e.g. a sponge filter). But there are certainly cases where there may be no mechanical filter and the tank is still very healthy with a bio filter, e.g. a Walstad tank or an algae scrubber tank. The mechanical part really only serves to protect your bio filter.

>>2468128
The reason why a LOT of experienced fishkeepers don't use it is because it's pretty useless for someone who does regular tank maintenance, i.e. you do water changes and use water conditioner.

Practically anything carbon does, water conditioner + regular water changes does better. You can't rely on carbon to remove harmful chemicals as it is way too slow at doing it while conditioner takes seconds.

I do run carbon against tannins however, as doing water changes + carbon is obviously going to be at least a little faster than water changes alone (then take it out once the water is clear).
>>
>>2468178
No, it's dumb as shit. Get acrylic if you're not afraid to spend a little cash on a tank. Clearer than low-iron, much better insulation, much easier to buff out scratches, stronger, lighter.

Also, neither acrylic nor low-iron is really worth it in a small tank.

Although it is pretty cool how indestructible and light this thing is (but really I only noticed that when it was empty and I was tossing it around; literally because it is that strong).

At minimum I probably would do nothing under a 40G breeder for either low-iron or acrylic.

Interesting dilemma. All the underwater light strips I see being sold are pretty much decor only. You might be a pioneer here. Let us know what you find and how it turns out.

I got mine used off a buddy, it's just an ugly old 65g. He gave it to me free because he was tired of reefkeeping. I've thought about pulling the rims off it but it's pretty scratched up so I think I'd rather get a different tank than mess with it.

but anyways, yeah you might find one floating around. They got really popular in saltwater about 10 years ago so there's quite a few out there.

Any tips on cutting acrylic? I keep trying to cut this for a corner filter but it snaps and breaks. I'm using an acrylic scoring knife.
>>
>>2468256
I use a fine-tooth hacksaw if I want a clean edge or a hot knife if the edge doesn't matter. I also like to put a strip of tape down and draw my lines on that so I get fewer burrs and chips.

Fishless? Fish cycling?
Adding any food/ammonia?
What type of water are you using?

Assuming you have a properly set up planted tank you can add fish day 1. Planted tanks never really cycle like nonplanted tanks.

>Planted tanks never really cycle like nonplanted tanks
Explain please. I thought that plants were there to uptake the nitrate from the end of the cycle.

they also consume ammonia and nitrite

so the anon is correct. If you have a shitload of plants, very very few fish, and a large amount of water circulation around the roots, your tank may not cycle normally.

Nobody here has those particular conditions though, so he's just talking out his ass.

in fact what /aq/ does is pretty much the opposite- they usually have soils and fertilizers that release ammonia and other nitrogen compounds into the water, so not only are the plants not consuming much nitrate &etc from the water column, but the aquarist is actively adding more than the plants can consume.

despite the silly belief that their plants are consuming it as quickly as a biofilter does.

Just got a 10 gallon with a dwarf Gaurami and 3 mollies. Started off fine but the Gaurami is now being a dick to the mollies. One of them has some fine nipping even. Will the mollys eventually learn to leave him alone or is this gonna be a problem? Any other suggestions? I'm going back to the LFS later this week to buy more fish
>>
>>2468791
Gourami are aggressive fish. It's probably going to kill them,
>>

a 20 gallon is the minimum for most mollies and many gourami need much larger your either bait of stupid which species of gourami do you have? you didnt really think you could buy and stock that tank with more fish did you dumbfuck? Why do so many people shove mollies into small tanks? Why not just get any of the dozens of tetras or rasboras or danios that can be stocked semi-comfortably.

And yeah, 10g is probably the minimum for a the small dwarf gouramis, although argument might be made that you could keep a single in a 5.5 like we do bettas?
>>
>>2468823
Honestly I might give away the mollies and get tetras. I fucked up and listened to the worker at the LFS
>>
>>2468823
some of the very small gouramis yes that's probably possible yeah i don't know why people put them in such small tanks I got like five in a 40 gallon
>>
>>2468827

Why do you shitpost on the aquarium section of an animal board on a Taiwanese crop rotation website
>>
>>2468827
I have five mollies, six black skirts, and three betta in a 4 foot long tank, and I still feel like I'm pushing it a bit. The bioload is fine, but watching them and watching how closely they all tend to swim together, I can't help but get a cramped feeling.

I added more plants and wood so they have more spots to go into, and I think it helped a bit, but yea...people underestimate how small a ten gallon space can be. Especially when you consider that the fish are going to be living their whole lives there. I mean, one could argue they aren't that smart, but still.

I have never seen bettas so active and hunting and acting natural, as I have when they are in bigger tanks.
>>
>>2465546
I do. Lot of plants. Keeping the more obscure species. Then also breeding egg scattering fish. Then some invert breeding which is easy but I'm keeping wild caught species only.
>>
>>2468779
I just asked for submersible lights. You don't need to know someones tank set-up to tell them what type of lights are submersible.

I think my Oscar is depressed. When it's feeding time he swims around and is as active as ever, and he doesn't look sick in any way, but whenever I leave the room for an hour or two I'll come back to find him floating right next to the filter inlet, often with his tail sucked right up to it, or I'll find him laying on the substrate among some plants.
Is there such a thing as fish toys I could get him?
>>
>>2468878
I would check your water quality and check online for illnesses before assuming he's depressed. If everything looks good, then look into some toys or something.
>>
>usual recommended algae eaters
>plecos, shrimp, snails, chinese/japanese algae eater
>no one ever mentions mollies

Goddamn, they are voracious. My tank is sparkling, and I have to supplement with algae wafers.
>>
>>2468913
My water is fine, and I haven't noticed anything about him to indicate a disease. Other than neon tetra disease, which sometimes makes the fish "sluggish" before it dies, but I don't think that's what this is.
>>2468916
>chinese/japanese algae eater
Chinese Algae Eater will kill anything remotely its size, and the Flying Fox only rarely eats algae. Siamese Algae Eater (Siamensis) is the one you want, these fuckers voraciously devour all algae.
>>
>>2468878
you're anthropomorphizing. This is normal fish behavior.
>>
>>2468919
I know, but it doesn't seem normal for fish to let their tail fins be sucked up against a filter outlet.
Or is this like masturbating to them?
>>
>>2468923
it's normal for them to be lazy, and it's pretty lazy to let the current hold you in place.

If he's active and fine at feeding time I wouldn't worry about him. He's probably "bored," as in lacking stimulation, but for an animal lacking stimulation can be a very good thing. Most of the stimulation they get in the wild is negative, so you're probably not going to produce overwhelming happy feelings by providing stimulation.

Personally I'd probably buy him some fish to hunt and kill, but that's just me. Others here will hate that idea.
>>
>>2468925
I feed him convict cichlids every now and then. I have a breeding pair in a smaller tank, and any fry that get to around tetra size get to become live food.
Even if I were the richest man alive I'd quickly run out of money if I were to just get new tanks to host each new pair of convicts, so keeping them isn't an option, and local demand for young fish isn't sufficient to hoist off all of them, so letting them be food beats just flushing them all.
>>
>>2468927
those are probably the best toys he could get.

other than that a laser pointer can be fun.
