The Plant General - No More Tomatoes Edition

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

ITT: Birdplant Round 2: Electric Boogaloo, sexy succs and a continual stream of lovely carnivorous plant pics.

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Paphiopedilum edition
>one basic split: mottled-leaf single-flower species vs pure-green-leaf multifloral species (and infinite hybrids between both groups)
>intermediate/cool temps with a healthy drop at night, mottled species often like it a little warmer
>good humidity and airflow
>high light tolerance, as far as orchids are concerned (multiflorals can handle it a bit brighter)
>water well, but of course with high-draining media
>wait for a few years for the beautiful little shits to flower

So, I have never grown anything by myself but I recently got a plant as a gift and even though it basically doesn't need much care I kinda liked caring for it at least a bit.

Now, what would be a good start for getting into this as a hobby? I would actually like to grow something that needs a bit of attention (like every few days I could take care after work) and gets "results" quickly, as I don't want to get bored too fast. Maybe some edible things like beans or tomatoes?

Alright, so I am now a plant owner. I have purchased plants and I do not want them to die.
I have bought a Sweet Potato Vine, an Asparagus Fern, "Herbs for Pizza" (they only herbs they had left; has basil at least), and Sedum Reflexum. I'm not sure if that's a big start, but I purchased four because I'm impatient and plants are cheaper than I thought.
So the herbs and the Sedum seem to be pretty simple, but I gotta repot the sedum apparently (I thought I could just keep 'em in the plastic thing they sold them in) and so I think I need to buy some soil or something. Had trouble finding specific recs on that for the specific type of sedum. So aside from that the slightly more care-necessary ones seem to be the vine and the fern. I have compiled a word document of things I need to do for them based on google searching, and I present it here unedited:
"Sweet potato vine:
-Lotsa sun
-keep soil "evenly moist but not drenched"
-fertilize the plant weekly??
ALT: "use balanced houseplant liquid fertilizer twice a month form early spring to mid-autumn"
-ALT: fertilizing is not really necessary????
-peat-based, well-drained potting soil not garden soil
-remove dry leaves
-gravel at bottom of pot
ASPARAGUS FERN:
MIST PLANT DAILY
OBTAIN PEBBLE TRAY
soil slightly acidic
problem with direct lighting?
purchase a liquid all-purpose fertilizer and dilute it to 1/2 strength from march to August fertilize every three to four weeks
Water plant "regularly" (every time soil is dry)"

As you can see the information based on fertilizing for the vine is somewhat inconsistent. If anyone can clarify this for me then that would be appreciated. In general, though, if anyone wanted to clarify some of the vagueries in my document on stuff like the specific type of soil I need to buy and just anything that I might have the wrong idea of, that would be great.
I just realized I need to put something under the herb box. I think I might just use a plate for that.

>>2424074
OK dude this is heaps easier than it seems.

Firstly soil.
Is not dirt. Soil is decomposed plants and bugs and shit, organic material technically called hummus? Not the dip, doesn't matter names are for faggots.
Dead shit mixed with stuff, either clay, sand, gravel, sticks or Coconut husk whatever, this shit gives the soil its shape. So a sandy soil has sand and dead shit. A clay soil has clay ect.
Peat is just dead stuff, best soil but maybe too damp or compacted for some plants, then you'd mix in sand or something to air it out.
You can buy it or make your own, general cheep potting soil is fine for most shit, not great but don't over think it.
I'd recommend making your own, experiment.

Fertilizer is extra dead shit for people with bad soil, you can go hydroponic and have no soil and just use fertilizer and water or you can use really good composted soil and it should be fine just with water.

I prefer not using fertilizer but you'll need a few square meters for compost bins and its a whole big thing.
So buy some seaweed based fertilizer, that should be fine for now, only add a dash every ~months?
>>
Pt 2
~schedules and shit
Are in my opinion retarded. You'll be much better at this and get a "green thumb" by paying attention and thinking about things.

So repot your plants, herbs can be in pots slightly bigger than the ones they came in up to fucking huge. It all depends on you and what you want to do. The plant wants a roughly equal amount of space for its roots and its branches, so if you trim the herbs to no more than a foot high they'll be good in little pots, your sweet potato too, they've got nice flowers and you can eat the tip leaves. Could be an ornamental hanging thing? But if you want potato's you need to give it enough room for 5 or so big sweet potato's with plenty or room to spare, a dustbin is not too big at all.
Half fill new pot, hold plant upsidown and shake pull it out, put it in new pot, more soil on top, pat down firmly and always be gental.

Mulch is a good idea, pine chips or small sticks and leaves. Rocks even. It keeps water from evaporating and is good for the plant, can't be too thick or mat together like grass clippings would, water won't get through.

Water the plants when they look like they need it, they can start to go brown and come back to green when watered. That's probably abit harsh on the plant but over watering is more of a danger for beginners. Water until it comes out the bottom slightly, but go slow, if you tip it in and wait till it pours out the bottom it'll take a while to stop coming out. Practice practice practice.

Sorry for my incoherent phone post, ask for clarification on things if you want

Peppers kickstarted my interest in growing stuff, and they can be beautiful too. It's the memeplant of the homegrowmen thread on /out/, they usually talk about them and other vegetable stuff.
You can even turn them into bonsai at the end of a season, when they have a bit of a stem.

I also like the meme plant of this thread, carnivores. They almost feel alive, and there's quite a few kinds that are very newb-proof. Venus Flytrap and Drosera Capensis for example are very easy, they just need sunlight, regular waterings (rainwater or distilled water only), and you can feed em bugs or fish food flakes.

Be careful friend, hostas are very rare and expensive. They can cost nearly two dollars to replace!
>>
>>2424347
They get up to 12 hours of direct sun, though 8 to 10 is probably more realistic. It's also quite warm in that room, and not only when there is sunshine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. And yes, I am that guy. I was never really interested in orchids since they have they're seen as old people plants, but that tiny little Fredclarkeara has sparked my interest (it has doubled in size again since I posted it two weeks ago!). I'll definitely get more Catasetinae but I want to know what my other options are as well.

Don't use coffee or even potting soil in the cup, those don't work.

Not sure if I'm in the right place, but I'm trying to identify this tree. I'm in southern Ontario.

Here's one of the leaves, it seems like it's asymmetric based on which side of the branch it's on. It's blooming right now, so I'll add pictures of the flowers and bark in a bit.

Thanks friendos

I remember picking that one because the teacher called it a 'money plant' and I hoped it would help my parents get more money.
It has grown pretty big, it's about 25 years old now I think. I'll try to remember taking a picture next time I visit my parents.

Most plants are fine on north/2 hour sun, but so are slugs. They fucked 9 pepper plants outback but I have 12 surviving out front. West side/5 hours got ravaged too.
Succulents probably should go on the south side.

Without direct sun and heat like that you'll never get those leaves colored up.

I paid 99 cents for 500 seeds on eBay (it was 95 cents if you only wanted 50), not like I was expecting much. My overall experiences with cheapo seeds from eBay are good, though. I've got a whole bunch of healthy plants from €1 seed packets.

The seeds are actually Dionaea seeds, but they must be ten years old. Still, how does a plant stay in seedling stage for so long? If I didn't know any better I'd think I got a temperate Welwitschia.

Triton is a very good cultivar, the biggest and most efficient spoon-shaped dionaea.
>>
>>2425265
No it isn't. I can see you're thinking of Kalanchoe tetraphylla/thyrsiflora because of the red leaf edges, but first of all it would then be more likely to be Cotyledon orbiculata, but it clearly isn't that either. It's just a regular Crassula ovata that's seen a bit more sun than the average houseplant.
>>
>>2425203
I'm not very interested in the million different Dionaea cultivars, especially not in those that are basically indistinguishable from a normal one, but I got a little 'Triton' as a freebie (in a pretty small order, too) and I really like it.

Looking at the Wikipedia article it's a biennial temperate plant, so it's only natural that it's dying off. If she's lucky some of the flowers will self-pollinate and net some seeds, so she can start growing one from seed again. Best to put it outdoors, though, because temperate plants don't enjoy indoor conditions (which are usually subtropical).

whenever I have root troubles either with keikis I leave them standing vertically over some wet dried moss for a couple of days, after a few they start developing new roots without the risk of having those rot again.
Usually with thick rooted orchids this works flawlessly but is not a sure thing, yours look rotten, what kind of substratum are you using?
Perhaps with this one you should consider mounting it on a piece of wood with bark.
Also next time check the focus on the camera, because thats a nice shirt and all but you cant see the details on the roots.

Im having trouble with pic related, it is a miltassia royal robe and its all covered with brown stains and all of the leaves are wrinkly and kind of dried up.

I grabbed a volunteer cherry tomato from our family garden for shits and giggles.
Going to keep them around, they go great with a beer.

Definitely the most profitable tomato, I'm saving every seed from tomatoes I eat and next year will aim for 200-300 stalks. Shit will be cash. These slow growing varieties are a pain in the ass to carry around until they fruit.

Good. I will start selling these now. I can get clay easily but I don't have a wheel and can't work with it too well. All types of tiny containers to plant in at the thrift store though.

Said garden, my part.
>>
Hi I'm >>2425679 and I was about to be off to the garden center but then I had a thought. Can I put together the pic in >>2425679 this time of year? Do people usually plant the mature flowers or do they grow them from seed? Like if I go to the garden center will they have these kinds of flowers or other kinds ready to go where I can just transplant them and have a thing, or is the idea that I plant such things earlier in the year so that they grow and bloom into mature plants?

This feels like a dumb question but I'm wondering if I'm too late to try to have something like that in my yard.
>>
>>2426638
Everything has to be planted from seed, friend. You're fine planting flowers now but don't expect results unless that cold ass chemtrail cover weather modification this year pushed summer back into September. It was 40 degrees every night until fucking mid June so why not keep planting?

I have never used sponge or ceramis, nor I let them on the same substrate they arrive on, so in thinking perhaps the medium is a low quality one or worst.
My advice is the same that in the last post, grab a container (if it has holes on the bottom better) and put a bed of dry moss and wet it, not very much thought, after that grab a pulverizer (I'm not entirely sure this is the name in English, but you know is that thing with the trigger that pulverize liquids) and make a fertilizer mix with 1/4 of the recommended doses, then pulverize some of that over the bed of moss.
after that just place the keiki in standing position, if you want make a little hole with your finger so the base gets covered but just a little bit (baby's gotta have sum oxygen).
Place it where it gets the light it needs and check it every day or so.
Is very important that you check it periodically because (mostly if the container doesn't have holes on the base) if you let it to much it will root again, and also because if it gets completely dry you'll kill the little one.
I almost always have gud results with this method, and I've tried it with vanda, dendrobium (moschatum, nobilis and bellatulum), red Steem epidendrum, oncidium and some miltonias.
Hope you can save it, and sorry if my syntax is hard to read.
Pic related is one of my orchid tables, besides the two pots with miniature cattleyas all of the plants there were saved with the moss nursery method

I went to the local garden center.

First off the place was fucking amazing. It was literally the size of a supermarket except filled with plants. Praying hands emoji , I feel blessed that such a place exists within 15 minutes of me.

The staff there were able to identify all the plants in >>2425679. I deviated a bit in terms of colors but got mostly the same plants. Also got some shade-tolerant plants for this flower box that's outside of my garage. I wish I could remember the species.

Blew like $120 at that place but I'm stoked to get this shit potted. I'll probably be back to blow more money there as I get more into this hobby. Would like some indoor plants, but my cart was full.

What is the purpose of grafting Astrophytum and similar? Is it only for propagation or are these nipponese cacti not strong enough to thrive?

Should I graft my super kabuto and onzuka so that they become more powerful?
>>
>>2427161
Astrophytum species and hybrids don't need grafting but it speeds up their growth and makes them less susceptible to disease and cold.
For example instead of growing them from seed for 5 years to get a small plant, it can take 1-2 years instead to get a much larger plant. Problem is they can look terrible depending on the rootstock.
I've grafted astrophytum seedlings before on selenicereus with mixed results so I'd suggest choosing a mainstream rootstock rather than just what you can get your hands on.
How familiar with cacti collecting are you though?
I've seen horror posts on garden forums where people have grafted incompatible plants because they didn't know any better.

>>2427169

Windows are designed to block UV rays. I have never had a plant successfully grow indoor south side, just on west side afternoon light.

Who the hell refuses to move the plants they care for outside? Get a spine, you're dealing with 40lbs max for vegetables and two handfuls for other plants.

Nice anecdotal evidence.
>>
>>2427355
I give jade full sun. Indoor growing is circumstantial, not ideal. You should be able to move your pots to where the sun is, 4-5 hours is all anything needs per day.
I don't mean a cactus or a "here's a fly, buddy!" reddit plant, most normal plants are fine with 4-5 hours, but I put out full sun plants in the gardens too to see how ideal my directional planting is working.
My west is doing well, north is shitty slug infested garbage, my south is growing plenty and has very few pests or bothers and the best dirt is up there, and I don't plant on the west.

So you're saying that NO south facing window can grow plants (even though that is where almost everyone grows succulents, cacti or anything that needs a lot of light) because YOUR south window gets no light?

Are you fucking serious? No one, absolutely NO ONE can be THIS stupid. Words can not express how dumb I think your post is, so have this picture instead.

>>2427341
You should probably get your information elsewhere. You've just seen why.
>>
>>2427361
>Indoor growing is circumstantial, not ideal.
As close to natural as possible conditions are ideal. If indoor conditions are closer to natural than outdoor those are more ideal. Indoor growing is not circumstantial if the plants you choose to grow simply do not have the conditions they need when you put them outside.

>4-5 hours is all anything needs per day.
>most normal plants are fine with 4-5 hours
You contradict yourself within 2 sentences.

And then you just tell the guy the situation of your plants in your specific conditions. This does not help him at all.

Are you the tomato retard?
>>
Christ.

Can somebody just tell me what are some interesting plants that fare relatively well indoors? I guess they can spend the summer on the terrace.
>>
>>2427391
Not happening.
These people are linguists and only work to track down autistic people on the internet so they can attempt to piss them off, they don't actually own any plants.
>>
>>2427391
Ignore the people arguing about mom plants and tomatoes. Succulents, ornamentals like African violets, orchids, small palm trees, snake tongues, and several carnivorous plant species grow well indoors. A lot of ornamental plants are cultivated for their low light tolerance. As long as you don't autistically insist that everything you grow must be useful and provide vegetables for the homestead there are a lot of options.

There is so much choice you really need to give us something to work with.

There is an orchid that strives in almost any environment you could have, you just need to put in a tiny bit of effort.

I bought some plants for a box that's attached to my garage window. Thought I was clever getting shade-tolerant plants since the garage itself obstructs the plants from the sun for most of the day. The problem I just realized is that the roof of the garage hangs over the box such that it's not getting any rain. Unless the rain is blowing in the right direction, the plants are going to dry out. Are there any plants that can tolerate shade and drought? I don't want the plants to be reliant on me watering them to survive.

I wish there were some clever way to direct rain water to the plants, I Google'd this general concept but couldn't formulate what I was thinking about into something coherent enough to search for.

Plants in question are Solenostemon and White Licorice but I guess I'll have to find a new place for them.
>>
>>2428352
What's so hard about hitting them with the hose every couple of days?
>>
>>2428364
Nothing, in theory. I'd prefer they not be completely reliant on my presence for survival, though. Let's say I go on vacation for a couple weeks, they'd probably be burnt up by the time I got back.

I haven't had it for that long yet, but I think I'm leaning towards the stemmed(?) species like >>2428286
It is pretty though, but I don't have any other pics at the moment.
I should have a madagascariensis tomorrow, I'm looking forward to growing that one.

Succulents are always a good answer. Personally I have the little pot in back with a mish-mosh I picked up on sale, an African violet (split thrice), and a supermarket variety moth orchid that someone gifted to me during the winter so it lost its spikes and is only now figuring out it should probably spike again.

I would really suggest ignoring the dude saying ""utilitarian"" (the quotes really cannot get sarcastic enough here) plants don't grow indoors, I've grown rosemary, basil, and thyme indoors; not enough to cover all my needs mind you, but enough to provide a treat for special occasions.

And my dumb orchid that I love nonetheless.

Also I forgot to mention that enough sun gets through the windows that when I forgot to rotate the leftmost violet it actually started getting sunburned. I really wouldn't listen to a word that guy is saying and just do what makes you happy.

It is some sort of Mammillaria that was very unfortunately dyed hot pink. It was also a gift, so I don't know much beyond that, sorry.

No photos of the flowers also, it went into shock too quickly. They were white with purple streaks if I'm remembering correctly. Hopefully it is feeling kind enough to remind me soon.

the lower leaves on my ghost plant are starting to look a little shriveled
should I actually think about watering it?

Are you feeding it something in order to help it flower? I own a few orchids and its always a good idea to fertilize them in growing and flowering seasons.

which season are you on right now?
in vegetative growing you have to give them fertilizers rich in nitrogen, in floration you go for higher levels of potasium and phosphorus.
I always use a quarter of the recommended dosis and put that in the water every time i water them, stop this when they go dormant. This works very well in oncidiums, miltonias and dendrobiums.

Do you want food plants or decorative ones? If you want to start a food garden, >>>/out/ has a thread too. This thread tends to be more ornamental oriented.

Fruit trees are a lot of fucking work. I know because I've removed all mine (about 18) and will be replacing them with ornamentals eventually.

Spider? Towering giant? DC XL?

Also I have that same sarracenia that's in the background. A shitty hunter but grows fast anyway.
>>
>>2429030
Switzerland Giant.
And indeed, that one on the left (S. Tygo) catches a whole lot, the newest pitchers are almost full and they're just a week or 2 old, while those big ones (S. Eva iirc) barely catch a thing.
>>
Never really been interested in carnivorous plants desu, but I looked up some pictures of diverse Sarracenia and I gotta say, some of them are really fucking aesthetic.

From what I know they all want peat or sphagnum as substrate, very soft water and shitton of light. The first two are no problem but the last one is. The only place I could put them outside is a south facing balcony, but that doesn't get light the entire day because there is another balcony right above it. I have a south facing window that gets full light though.

Are there any noob Sarracenia that I could get that would be ok in those conditions? And where do I best get them (in europe)?
>>
>>2429035
Oh, just another tall giant then.
I think the sarracenia on the right is S. Fiona, at least it looks just like mine.
>>
>>2429038
I think S. Purpurea would do better with less sunlight (As it is canadian) but it's the most primitive and least aesthetic.

How many hours of sunlight do you have? I think most of them would do well with 6 hours anyway.
>>
>>2429044
there seem to be some nice S. purpurea
also they're THICC which is always a plus

>How many hours of sunlight do you have?
the window gets about 9 hours of direct light, the balcony mabye 6
>>
>>2429048
Then maybe you can grow any of them inside and take them outside for winter. Or grow purps outisde.

Anyway I had them outside with 6 hours of sunlight in summer and they grew fine. If you want something beautiful, S. Leucophylla and S. x wrigleyana are the most colorful in my opinion.

>Will it heal with time?
no

yes

plants have to "tan" the same way people have to before they can manage full sunlight. New leaves which grow in full sun will have the protection from the get go but old leaves don't.

You'll need some extra lights for optimal results (fluorescent tubes are fine, if you get the daylight ones), but it should be doable. I'd pick something that doesn't grow too tall. I'm growing some for the first time, I snipped the tops a few times, and now I have a very bushy plants with lots of flowers, that stayed relatively small (<50cm).
And yes, homegrowmen thred is great for peppers.
