The Plant General - SUCCulent Edition

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: sleepy snoozy VFTs, smug N. edwardsiana owners and beautiful budding normie seedlings.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Stapelia/Orbea edition:
>fairly standard succulent care, most commercial species are easy
>well-draining cacti/succulent soil
>light watering, keep it dry in winter
>direct sun to very light shade
>don't let it get too cold, minimum 10c
>wait until flowering occurs to hide the smell of any rotting corpses you may be hiding

Got them through friend, and the seeds looked exactly like the ones from pictures.

I've read on flytrapcare that it takes 4-6 weeks to germinate. It's been 3, so I assume this is random grass.

Reposting from last thread. I have a lipstick plant that I've kept submerged in water for about 2-3 months and it has a clump of roots that vary from 1-2 inches but it appears the node I have submerged is now getting two buds on it that may be stems, I'm wondering if I should leave the plant in water or if I should transfer it into a pot, any tips about moving a plant into soil from water would also be appreciated. I'm thinking of picking up a Drosera Capensis and I'm wondering if anyone here who owns could give me a good place to pick one up?

>>
>>2371883

Lower the light to 3-6 inches above the plants, and bump up the time to 18 hours a day.

It might also be a crappy soil mix. I find this happens more when the soil is too acidic, and has too much organic matter and not enough clay rich in calcium and other important minerals.
>>
>>2371956
I've sowed seed last year and I have a few seedlings left which are about ~1 cm diameter.
What kind of soil are you sowing into? When do you start encountering problems?
imo my problems started about 3 months after getting 100% germination, they just didn't grow after the initial two or so weeks. It was only after I repotted them that they started growing and getting their first true leaves.
>>
>>2371988

All of the seed packets I had came with instructions or print-outs. they all said to put a layer of fine sand over some cactus-formula potting soil, and to place the seeds just under the surface of the sand, then mist occasionally.

I tried moist cactus soil under the sand, then fairly dry cactus soil, then something in between. I also tried different temps and misting schedules, but no luck.
>>
>>2371993
No luck with what?
Do they germinate? Rot?
And the mix should definitely be moist, at least for the first month or so.
Are you growing with natural lights? Have you tried putting them in a plastic ziploc bag?
>>

Where did you buy them from? in my experience mesembs germinate very quickly and easily so it might be the seeds that are the problem.
If you live in america or europe you'd be better off ordering from places like mesagarden, cactusstore, succseed or koehres kakteen.
Are you sowing in spring? Sometimes in my experience, succulent seeds can be very stubborn about germinating if they aren't contained in a high moisture environment so you should try that. Be aware though that if your soil medium isn't very good this will cause mold to grow which could potentially kill your seedlings/seeds.
Do they look like this?
>>2372188
Looks like an aracaea though i can't id especially without the flower. imo if it's during spring-autumn i'd keep it moist

Some can be a pain to germinate, others germinate very easily but once you've germinated them they grow very easily regardless of the species.
Just try sowing them on top of medium sized sand/grit, e.g not sandpit/builders sand, on top of some decent draining soil and keep them wet.
Definitely worth a try.

what about cacti? or do they count as succulents? i'm very new to /plant/ (own one bolivian torch since last tuesday) and i don't have a lot of space, so i just want something that is easy to take care of and looks interesting
>>
>>2373710
Cacti and succulents are among the easiest plants to propagate through cuttings.
For example, crassula ovata will root when placed in slightly moist to dry soil almost every time. I believe the same is true for most cacti, but I have little experience with them. It just sucks to grow them from seed, it takes forever, some succulents rarely seed. Some bamboo is not known to seed at all, or seed infrequently. It's more common to take cuttings, but growing from seed is less impractical imo.
>>
>>2373734
>>2373710
Forgot to mention, succulents and cacti are great starter plants. I believe bamboo is more commonly cultivated outdoors, although lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii, not true bamboo) takes quite well to indoor growing.

My house has a nursery uphill behind it. This past winter we had heavy rains that ended up killing most of the grass and plants in my backyard. I suspect it was weed killer washed down from the nursery, but I'm not sure if it works that way.
Regardless, there was an ugly patch of dirt back there next to my shed. I filled it with native plants and wildflower seeds (California poppy, California bluebell, etc) about a month and a half ago and the growth has been fantastic. The black sage in the back has more than doubled in size.
It's right next to my bedroom window and it smells fantastic at night.

Also got this awesome Salvia Desperado from a local nursery for a big discount (moving sale). It's supposed to be a hybrid between salvia apiana and salvia mellifera.Hoping it keeps the look of the apiana with the durability and fast growth of the mellifera. So far I've had little luck growing apiana in my yard even though basically every other kind of native salvia thrives in it.
>>
>>2374026
>had very little luck growing plants in my backyard

Well it is just hard packed dirt anyways.
>>
>>2373710
Nah ignore that idiot, succulents aren't just limited to crassula and it's far more interesting and cost effective to grow from seed than it is to grow from cacti/succulent cuttings.
you should try out mixed species genus mixes like these http://www.cactusstore.com/category_63/Cacti-Seed-Mixes.htm or these http://www.cactusstore.com/category_76/Succulent-Seed-Mixes.htm if you're a beginner and not really fussed about knowing species/locality of seed collection.
I'd recommend you try easier species like mammilaria or ferocactus but it'd depend on whether you're growing indoors or not. From my experience non cacti succulents grow far better in doors than cacti do so if that's what you're limited to I'd suggest not growing cacti, especially not a trichocereus like the bolivian torch is, they grow pretty tall and fast.
For succulent seeds i'd recommend trying lithops, aloinopsis, titanopsis or faucaria. All relatively fast growing, obviously not as fast as weed succulents though.

I have lots of large bushes of various other kinds of sages that grow easily in the same soil. White sage so far has been the only kind that doesn't do well even though it's native to the area.

thanks for the advixe!
the problem is that i live in the netherlands and only have a balcony, i can put the cacti out there when it's sunny but i'm mostly limited to growing indoors (hoping to move to a place with a garden in july/august though.
Do you think the bolivian torch will die inside? or will it just become too big? i kind of like the idea of having a huge cactus in my room desu and if it gets to big i guess i could always divide it into smaller cuttings or just consume it.
It's just about 10cm for now anyways, i'll try to post a pic from my phone

Where the hell can I buy a Chinese Elm that's not a shitty overpriced "bonsai"? I thought this plant was fairly common but I haven't been able to find a single one.
It's kind of annoying how hard it is to find trees regarded as common or uninteresting. For example this Trident Maple. I had to drive over an hour to a nursery who only grew them as rootstock to get one. I did manage to get it for only $5 though. Would've bought more, but I didn't want to take advantage of their hospitality for agreeing to sell me one. I'm tempted to grow a bunch of Chinese Elm from seed, because seeds are cheap and plentiful, but it's time consuming.

Then those cups are really popular, mr Tomato.
I've watered mine about once a week since I transplanted em to those bigger pots.
There's a lot of debate over that. Some claim it doesn't make a difference and in a year topped vs non topped look the same.
I'm hoping to keep mine stocky and bushy, and eventually, should I manage to keep em alive through the summer, to make some into bonsai, so I think it will help my purpose.
Day 1 vs day 14 (today).

Nice mang!
Now I sortof want to try growing some again, I had a few different kinds of carnivorous plants as a teen, but most died in a year or 2 because I couldn't be arsed taking proper care of em. Flytraps were thriving tho, started with one, and then I found out you could just pull a trap off the bulb when repotting, it would have just a few roots, but that was enough to get a whole new plant started.
And I had some sundews that spread themselves to the other pots, heh. Cute tiny plants, just a few mm high.

This might be an odd-ass question, but I'm turning my room into an indoor garden of sorts like pic related but way more intense. Problem is I have pets and plan on getting more, specifically, a cat that I can't exactly lock out of my room. I can find plenty of lists of plants that could harm cats, and lists of plants that are specifically good for cats, but I can't find anything that's just "indoor plants not harmful to cats".

Can anyone give me suggestions? I'd like to have a decent variety, maybe some small trees too.

It will be ok, do not worry.
It's a Jade, so water, wait until its completely dry for some days (this depends on the season) and water again.
It'll do better if you place it under direct sunlight for some hours.
The fallen leaf it's almost guaranteed to become a new plant.

My cephalotus started developing a flower stem. Let's see how it does, I hope it grows healthy, I've had bad experiences with these picky sonofabitches.

Just standard cactus procedure, high light but reasonable watering (make sure you get a right balance). Not sure if the offshooty bits can be removed, personally I'd leave them until it's settled in.

Not an expert but I do believe it is normal for Jade plants to produce red areas usually on the tips, if it continues to get worse then you could reduce the light the plant gets.

well its a little easier to find plants that cats will just ignore because it seems everything is on a list somewhere. i no bamboo is bad and tempting to some cats. it could be on the list because the tuber is poisonous and your cat wont eat that. my cat regularly eats dracaenas which as listed as poisonous but doesn't seem to hurt him. for something like the picture you might want to try a greenhouse that specializes in gesneriads. or read this page http://plantsarethestrangestpeople.blogspot.com/2009/04/houseplant-toxicity-week-part-6-safe.html

Just showing stress I think. I'm somewhat of a newb, but I've seen similarly transplanted seedlings react to new conditions, then recover.

I believe basics in this situation are: don't overwater, partial sunlight, keep steadily warm, no fertilizers and once you water, it's gotta be stagnant (but clean) to minimize whatever comes with the tap water (chlorine?). Good luck!

I haven't even touched my cactus in actual years and it's still growing fine and healthy outside. No water, but my dad split it into two separate plants because it was getting frickin' huge like two years ago. Probably only really doing fine because they're outside, though. My dog's too much of a dick to bring it in the house.

Hey /plant/ I recently started a sorta vase terrarium for a pitcher plant and venus fly trap. One of those little Lowes starter kits. Read that I should mic perlite and peatmoss, then top it with soaked sphagnum moss. Unfortunately the peatmoss I purchased has 1% fertilizer mixed in. Is such a low percentage of fertilizer going to kill my plants or will they be alright?

>>
>>2380879
Probably inside, I'm in North Carolina. I also have a small shelf outside if growing them inside is unfeasible. Apparently I'm in zone 8a, always thought I was in 7.

>Does it produce sap when cut?
I don't know, only got this one photo, unfortunately. I'll ask the lady to try that tomorrow. It does look like it, just a bit miserable. Maybe not enough sun.
>epiphyllum oxypetalum
Wow! This one has some magnificent blooms it seems.
Thank you!
>>
>>2380882
sorry but I don't grow indoors so I can't really offer any good recommendations. I'd imagine epiphytic cacti would be good to grow, for example schlumbergera, rhipsalis or hatiora. You could also try looking for euphorbia's suitable for indoors growth or hoya's.
I saw a photo years ago of a huge euphorbia trigona that was grown indoors that looked very healthy but I'm not sure how accurate it is.
>>2380886
Just be careful that you don't get any of the sap on you. At best it'll just cause a rash and at worst cause you a myriad of health problems.

You can do either, leave it in the water a little while longer and see what the new growth does or plant it and barely cover the new growth with soil. If they are roots they will go down, if they are new shoots they will grow out of the soil in a few days. Sorry no one has replied. Tbh it sounded like something you could figure out yourself. Anyway hope your plant does well.

They grow very well at her place, she has plenty several years old with a bunch of babies.

I have an aptly named butterflyweed in my backyard that's now home to dozens of monarch caterpillars and it's on its last legs, so I got this from my neighbor because it looked really milkweed-sequence. Anyone know a good palce to get peat and sand in the UK?
>>
>>2383663

Yes, it is. I got it as nursery stock because I was looking for the specific cultivar 'Sharp's Pygmy', as it has some pretty good characteristics for bonsai. These are grafted; if you look closely you can see the awkward bump in the tree where the graft line is. Because graft lines are considered ugly, I'm looking at air layering next year to get rid of it, which means cutting a ring around the trunk just above the graft line all the way down to the heartwood, placing a bag filled with sphagnum moss in there and encouraging new root growth with root hormone. Typically done in May, so a year from now I'll be pretty nervous hoping that works. I've tried cuttings from this this year, but haven't gotten one to root (tried three).

hmmm... Does this guy need more light? This is the first leaf that has grown in under my care and while the edges are red-tinted, the leaf is turning towards my window and is pretty long. Color seems to match its old leaf though...

Is it possible this deformation is just the effect of the trauma the plant suffered during its time in the florist's shop before I bought it?
>>
>>2384111
It depends. The stuff my dad uses in his lab actually works, but he has to purchase it from a bulk supplier that only sells to universities and other large commercial users. I'd imagine that over-the-counter rooting powder can't possibly boost your chances of root development for a cutting that much, but it depends on the kind of plant you take cuttings from. Plants with hard stems are harder to coax into rooting since their cells are less malleable.

That's a "sugar leaf."
Once a plant gets to leaf set 2, it sucks the life out of it's two starter leaves/old shell casings, kills the leaf and drops it. It's normal. Ambient/reduced sunlight is best during this time.

Ive planted my peppers on March 20th but they are growing very slowly due to cloudy/chilly weather.
They're mostly like in pic >>2384371

These fucking assholes were planted around March 5. 70 Days to 1 inch tall.
OG is hell sometimes. I don't feel like retrieving them for a picture.

Store plants.
Left, 2x Horrifyingly hot banana peppers
Green peppers
Slicing tomatoes
Pepperoncini sprout (amazingly)
More slicing tomatoes (3 sprouts)
And more slicing tomatoes sprouted in front, transplanted once. Green pepper seeds can easily take two weeks to appear.
Like anon said, dry seeds out completely, use your counter because peeling things like tomato seeds off a paper towel sucks.

It's not pointy enough to be a cannabis seedling I don't think. Plus, cannabis seeds can be a little pricey so i'd think he would watch them closer.

Wear gloves while seeding anything that isn't a bell.
I dug the seeds from those "banana peppers" and it felt like a lighter was being held between my fingers for 30 hours flat. They are fucking volatile, I ate some and it was like a milder habanero. I have 150 seeds if anyone wants to put danger labels on a plant and risk skin damage while moving them.

Repotted em anyway, couldn't handle the uncared-for-look storeboughts always have.
Drosera madness from just that one pot. And there was a cute baby pinguicula hiding underneath the 2 'parents'.

The other guy was talking about plebbit plants though, I wasn't being mean to him.

I'd warn you to not keep dionaea with sarracenia and drosera, they want less water and can rot if you keep them constantly moist.
What I do is to put them in pots that are big (you already did that), water them, wait until the surface of the substrate is dry (but never let the bottom dry out) and then water again.

Alos the same for mexican pinguicula and keep them (the pinguicula I mean) with filtered sunlight, they don't tolerate direct exposure too well.

Cheers mate, I'll keep that in mind!

Buy from ebay sellers, you actually might get the right species.

I once bought quite a few seeds from aliexpress (all kinds of stuff, 20+ species) for fun because they're selling the rarest shit ever in bulk and I knew it's all a scam. What I got was absolute bullshit. The seeds were just random trash they packaged up and sent out. Sometimes the seeds had a similar shape as the real thing but were a completely different species other times they weren't related at all.

I even set up a blog where I presented the advertised species and what actually grew from the seeds. I eventually got bored of it and deleted everything though.

Pleased to say my sundew has recovered fine and is putting out leaves fast.

Congratulations. If it continues to grow well in the next few months you'll be able to grow like 80% of the drosera species in cultivation.

What does /plant/ know about mugwort?
A family friend grows and sells a myriad of different plants and mugwort took over a few of her beds.
After learning a bit about its calming nature, I've decided to bring home a bundle to dry in my window. Gonna try and use it to help my brother quit smoking cigarettes.

Any interesting fun facts on mugwort?
