Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I should sleep so I might never see this thread again (though this board IS slow..)

I really want a few goldfish but I want to give them the best lives possible for goldfish. I feel bad for the amount of them that get sold to ignorant people and used for food (although I know the latter is unavoidable). How can I achieve this? What should I start with, and what kinds? Fancy goldfish? Comets? Ryukin? ..I guess it doesn't really matter. Would a 10 gallon be ok for like...3 of them? For now, anyway? Or is that too small? I'm aware they can get pretty big, especially the fancier ones. What's the max size tank I should look into getting for the future?

Also I know they prefer colder water, but my house is FOREVER WARM because of my Asian-ass family. Will this be a problem or will the tank be able to take care of it?

I was looking into the Black Moor goldfish but I also have a soft spot for the comets. Would the Black moor eventually eat the comets because of how much bigger it can get?
>>
>>2357545
It's the other way around, comets and commons (the ones with a single tail) are the ones who get massive, they can get to a foot long or more. The fancy variants (all of your short bodied ones such as black moors) just get fat as fuck with flowing tails. Because of that, comets eventually need a huge as fuck tank (+100g) or a pond as they are built for swimming and will use the whole space. Fancies, depending which kind you keep) stay smaller and are shit at swimming, so they don't need as huge as aquariums. A 10g is only good temporarily as they will out grow it (better to start with a 20-30g). Plus goldfish are social and do better if kept with more than one, which means you'd need to upgrade it according per fish (a 40g is good for like 2-3 when fully grown)

Also keeping comets with any fancy variant isn't too good of an idea because they're faster and will out compete them for food or straight up bully them. Also while goldfish may prefer cold water, they can still do fine in warmer water as well. Unless your house gets hot as fuck, room temp is fine.

Well, it's been two weeks now. The aquarium has been running for two weeks, plants were added a week ago. I haven't kept plants in any capacity before, but they seem to be doing alright so far. I got two ferns because I read that they're the hardiest. I haven't noticed any growth yet, but I have no idea what the growth rate are on these anyways. I'm not using any sort of ferts, but I did get gimmick substrate that's supposed to provide nourishment to plants. Of course, these aren't entirely in the substrate, so I have no idea if it's helping at all. Two nights ago I noticed a gunky film all over the top of my water so I went out and got an air stone and pump to try and keep the surface circulating. Lo and behold it cleared up overnight. Haven't tested the nitrates or pH yet. Do you reckon it might be good now, or will it need to cycle for a while longer?

Serious question here

How important is a filter?
I have an 10 gallon tank with 5 guppies and do weekly 25% to 50% water changes.

My filter broke months ago and I never replaced it, should I? Honestly seem fine without it, water shows up fine on test strips.
>>
>>2357858
5 guppies isn't much of a bioload. I mean you're fine but I wouldn't advise adding more stock as you'd probably get a spike in ammonia.

Would it be ok to put a filter rated for 10 gallons in a 20 planted gallon tank? If so, how long? I have a HOB filter for the 20 gallon at the moment, which is working fine, but I'd like to move my cherry and ghost shrimp from a 10 gallon tank I have to the 20 gallon. There are some shrimp that are small enough to get sucked into the filter.
It would only be a temporary measure, because I'd be getting a better filter after easter.

> How important is a filter?
the only "filtration" that is necessary is biological. bacteria will grow anywhere inside an aquarium, as long as there is adequate surface area.

It would be good to have some sort of water movement though to help oxygenate the water, promote gas exchange, and prevent dead spots.
a small powerhead or an airstone

Just found out that both of the minnow species I caught in the river to stock my tank are going to get way too big for the tank they are in. If I cut down the population one of them will work, but the other gets like 12 inches. long. Thankfully, the pretty species is the one I can handle, it maxes out at about 6 inches and I only have three of them. Pic related is the pretty species.
>>
>>2357983
>Not that anon, but would plants and a marimo moss ball help with filtration at all?
Yes definitely. Nitrates and phosphates are used by plants to grow.
In reef aquariums people often use refugiums with a type of algae called chaetomorpha to help remove nutrients.

Hello /an/ first time poster on this board. I have a 29 gallon with an ac110 hob. Current stock is one angel and four platys. Two questions:

1: Is there any chance I could get sick if I use aquarium water to water my plants?

2:Has anyone tried to keep an aquarium outside on their porch before? And if that is just a bad idea, what kind of cost efficient little micro pond could I make for just like..aquatic plants and a small waterfall? Maybe even something that my dog could drink out of during the summer?

I just want something kind of pretty and relaxing to watch out on my backporch, but still kind of small. Let's say max 4 feet long by 2/3 feet wide.

My betta tank has been handling it ok, but it does grow some small amounts of hair algae.

I remove that every other day though, and I just added more plants, so I'm hoping it won't grow as quickly now.
>>
>>2358711
>Aquariums can't handle direct sunlight.
If they're inside by a window, they're fine. Have a 10 gallon thats only lighting is from a window facing east, the plants grow fine. A lot of algae, but thats might fault for not cleaning often. My shrimp in there do fine too, along with all of the snails and a dwarf crawfish.
>>
>>2358727
Maybe that's what they meant by not handling direct sunlight-all the algae overgrowth.
>>
Watching a documentary on the pacific. It says fish can reach bigger populations in colder water rather than trropical water. Why is that?
>>
>>2358734
Algae isn't really a problem if you wipe it down once a month, it takes 5 minutes. I'm just lazy and don't mind it.
>>
>>2358739
Ya, probably depends how much light it's getting too.

The hair algae (think it's hair algae, looks like hair or stringy) in my tank grows into pretty big clumps within three or four days if I don't remove it.

If I let it sit for a month, it would probably overrun everything.
>>
>>2358742
Putting more plants is probably the easiest solution, along with cutting back on how much light it gets.
>>
>>2358747
Ya, easy enough to deal with.

My tanks almost self sufficient at this point. The betta has just been eating any shrimp husks he finds, the shrimp eat whatever is on the plants, and the plants soak up the sun. All I have to do is give a flake or two every few days to vary his diet, or a small piece of pea, and get the algae out.

Pretty happy with it really.

I'm sure I'll have to get some root tabs in a few months, but that's no work at all.
>>
>>2358735
Possibly due to colder water retaining oxygen better?
>>
>>2358735
slower metabolism means they eat less and live longer. Both tend to increase populations. (more food and more reproductions).
>>
My betta has a long string of white poop. Should I be concerned? He's always been healthy and I feed it cut up carnivore pellets. He still swims around a bit now. I was cleaning out its filter last night and the water got cloudy from it getting stirred up and shit. I dont think it's parasites, since nothing would have introduced it, but how concerned should I be?
>>
>>2357420
is a real life Ditto?
>>
>>2358896
I tried looking some stuff up on google for you, but it's mixed info. Some say it's possibly related to parasites, while others say it might be from eating too much plant matter (which isn't good for them), or from something having stressed them.

My suggestion, and I'm not an expert by any means, is to just watch it for a few days. If he gets worse/doesn't get better, try treating for parasites, or a general medicine. Also try not to feed him for a few days. He might find something to eat in his tank, but ya, try to fast him and let his system clean out.

If he starts to get worse at all, just start googling the behaviour and emergency care.
>>
I want to get fiddler crabs (uca pugilators), what should I know? Can I put multiple males together in the same tank or will they fight and get hurt?
>>
>>2358913
Bettas don't typically eat plants. They're carnivores.

>>2358916
They are brackish water and not freshwater. They also need access to land and can't live always submerged. Give them substrate that will allow them to burrow. Everything that the store tells you is wrong.

Has to do with ocean currents and water density far more than any other factor. Cold (and salinated) water is more dense than warm (and fresh) water.

At the tropics, warm water sits over top of cold water in a stable water column.

In colder climates, water mixes vertically in the water column more readily, bringing nutrients from the ocean floor back up to the surface in a process called upwelling. These nutrients feed phytoplankton which propagates up the entire food web.

The coriolis effect also causes upwelling at the equator, but to a lesser degree than in northern and southern waters.

>>
>>2358925
Well I'm not talking about like the plants in it's tank. I was thinking more along the lines of food for the other tank mates if their are any. Like my betta will snag an algae pellet from time to time when I feed my shrimp, and I've read of other peoples bettas eating some of the cucumber they put in for their shrimp/cories.

Mine will also willing munch down on some frozen pea.

It's not good for them, but they do do it when they think it's food.

Using aquarium water to water your fucking vegetables is a bit of a gamble, because you can never ever use any fish medicine of any sort on that water.
>>

you can get a cheap 3 gallon and go with the walstad method. Your total cost would probably be somewhere in the 30 dollar range, and even cheap tables will be able to withstand 35 pounds.

How does one keep humidity down in a cold room with a heated aquarium? Least time I tried to keep a 10g aquarium I had huge issues with mold and mildew.
>>
>>2359356
Ya I put him in the bathtub once a week or once every two wesks while I'm doing a water change.

I always scrub ghe tub down and treat the water. It's the same treatment and water that goes into his aquarium, so I hope it's ok lol.

He seems to enjoy the tub time though, he always explores thoroughly and flares at his reflection on the metal ring. Then when he goes back in the tank he is more relaxed.

But yea, he's doin really well. I love that he explores more and likes to lay in different levels of the plants. Doesn't bother the shrimp either, which is cool.
>>
My betta got columnaris infection out of nowhere. His tail fin has been eaten in half and was all white, and he had a white thing in his mouth.

I just dipped him in a medicated bath for about 30 seconds and then put him back in. The columnaris is literally gone off of him, though he was acting loopy from the medication. It's pretty nuts. I'm upset about this though. Anyone ever actually fought off columnaris? I read about it and apparently it's really hard to treat and you're supposed to trash your entire tank or some shit. Why me.

Yeah. I'll just keep an eye on him. Unfortunately the bacteria spreads faster in warm water apparently but I don't want to turn the heater off and possibly stress him out/fuck up his immune system. I hope he pulls through or I might just have to euthanize him which I don't want to do. I've only had him for about 6 months...

Hey anons, can you help me diagnose my betta? Now don't crucify me pls, I'm fairly new to the aquarium game and I've tried to follow the right steps in keeping a betta.

I've had him for about 4 months. He lives in a 2.5 gallon tank with an air stone and a Tetra Whisper 3i filter. I do a 50% water change every week and a 100% water change every month replacing the filter during that change.

However, I've recently noticed something wrong with his fins. They seem to be deteriorating. I've done some google searching I know it could be fin rot, but while his fins seem to be fraying and such, it isn't decaying at a rapid pace and they don't seem to be black at the tips or bloodied. He also doesn't seem to be too lethargic and always gets excited when I come into the room, especially so when I feed him.

So anons, is it fin rot? And if so what should I do? I read that you can use aquarium salt to cure it, which I might go and pick up soon.
>>
>>2359456
this has happened with most of my bettas. usually the fin grows back after awhile. it's probably mild fin rot and doesn't usually cause issues for the fish, just looks ugly. it's kind of inevitable with any sort of filter in the tank, the water movement is rough on their long fins.

keep an eye on him for any white lesions or 'fuzz' as it could be columnaris like was mentioned above.
>>
>>2359456
>50% water change every week and a 100% water change every month replacing the filter during that change
Sounds excessive, probably very stressful.
I'll wait to see what anons say about the fins... don't apply salt to shit w/out very extensive reading and confirming because salinity is one of those water stats that when a little off will obliterate your aquarium life.
>>
>>2359456
I don't have much experience with bettas, but it could be tail biting. From what I understand, they tail bite either when they're bored or when their big, flowy fans mess them up when they swim. How much flow is in the tank? His fins could be catching the water current and throwing him off, so he bites them to swim better.
Or he could just be bored, is the tank planted with lots of hidey holes?
>>
>>2359458

Thanks guys. I've been looking for specs or fuzz on him and I haven't seen any, which is a good sign.

>>2359459

I read that with a smaller tank like this, you should be doing water changes more often, so that's what I was following as a guideline, 50% every week. Would it be better to leave the tank for two weeks before doing 50% changes? I can change up the routine if need be

>>2359460

The flow would be from the filter and the airstone, I'm not sure if that would be too much. I guess I could always unplug the airstone, as bettas don't technically need their water aerated, right? Maybe that would help him out with less flow. And he may be bored, most of the day I'm out and he's in the room by himself. I gave him a few plastic plants (I know plastic isn't the best, I plan to get some real plants in there) and they don't seem to be too rough or catch his fins. He loves hanging out in the fake anemone I purchased for him and I made sure he has plenty of places to hide behind.

I'll keep watch over him and his fins, but the good news is that it doesn't sound like a bacterial infection
>>
>>2359465
The best solution to your problem(s) would probably be to get real plants. They help clear the water so huge water changes aren't neccessary as often. They also don't have a chance of tearing your bettas fins as plastic plants would, and they provide lots of places to hide.
>>
What kind of root tabs are good? I've heard Seachem doesn't make good ones but what else is there?
>>
>>2359456
>>2359456
You don't need to replace the filter, just take it and give it a gentle rinse in the water that you have taken out of the tank.

It helps colonize good bacteria that help to keep certain nasty chemicals in the water down, but if you replace it, you replace the bacteria.

Look up 'cycling a tank'
>>
>>2359465
Airstone isn't needed if you have a filter because the filter is providing the ripples that along the top that exchange gas from the water.

Real plants will help, but small (like a half gallon /gallon water change twice a week would be just fine.

Look up slowing or reducing the flow for betta with water bottle on YouTube, it works wonders.

Try and get him a ten gallon if you can (they are like 15 bucks), and make sure his temp is between 75/84, but preferably around 80 F.

Also don't overfeed. No matter how much he begs.

What is a good fish to breed right now for money and a generally fun experience? I bought 6 very small GBRs hoping they pair off. I really hope they're not from a Chinese farm and actually have decent genetics. Might order some wild-caught ones.

I'm also kind of thinking of Red Belly Piranhas. I heard they don't make good pet fish in general but they're quite the meme right now in the hobby and dudebros gobble them up. A juvenile here is 34 bucks right now!
>>
>>2359812
The dude is friends with suppliers, shop owners, and every big fish keeper in North America.

Uncle Sam's Discus (the biggest Discus breeder and seller in North America) literally started their business BECAUSE of his videos.
>>
>>2359856
He seems that way because he's stereotypically Canadian nice, but it actually does annoy the fuck out of him when people are stupid, especially the kind that ask common questions yet tell him what to do (e.g. shouldn't your ray tanks have sand since they have sand in the wild?). He's addressed it in videos of him getting so annoyed at times he's had to take breaks from filming new stuff.
>>
>>2359844
Gourami can be surprisingly aggressive towards other types. They are, after all, related to Betta splendens.

So no, I wouldn't recommend it. Also opaline gourami get pretty fucking big so it would have the whole big fish vs small fish problem anyway, and I hope you have a big tank.
>>
>>2359456
no one has told you what's wrong yet so I will, bettas will rip their tails on plastic plants with edges. that doesn't look like fin rot, invest in silk or live plants. and melafix will help that fin damage heal.

Newbie here,
Can I keep tetras and shrimps together? I read shrimps need hardness for moulting but tetras do best in soft water. I collect rainwater and have really hard tap water so I can easily adjust the hardness.
>>
>>2360276
Most of the common tetras will do fine in harder water. I suggest making a place for the baby shrimp to hide though. Dense moss or a pile of rocks will do.
>>
>>2360276
main thing would be tetra aggression against the shrimp. some species are more aggressive than others but just give a lot of cover and hiding for the shrimp
>>
>>2359979
Discus are a little difficult to take care of, but worth a lot of money. Angel fish are commonly bred, but you'd have to breed special varieties like the red ones to make a lot of money. Shrimp are supposed to be easy to breed and some varieties are rare and expensive. Just remember to cull the shrimp colonies. If you go all out on koi, I bet you could do well. You also should look into the legal parts of breeding fish for money. There are some hoops you are supposed to jump through.

>>
>>2360276
What kind of tetras? Neon tetras will do totally fine with them, and is probably the most commonly kept fish with most shrimp varieties.

Black skirt tetras will absolutely wreck the shit out of them.

I would adjust water parameters for the shrimp, as they are more expensive than neon tetras (if that is what you are thinking of) and less hardy.

Healthy tetras are actually fairly hardy, just that a LOT of them from chain stores are already in very poor condition.

>>2360505
Out of all those, I would agree, shrimp are the easiest to get into for breeding and actually pretty profitable. Nice colored ones can go for $3-6 EACH, and if you have a nice setup, you can breed shit tons. Culling is key though, and even culls can sell for cheap.

Mollies are super easy to breed and are a pretty fun and interactive fish, but they sell for absolutely nothing.

>>2360523
Sort of. Most likely you're going to buy one, test your tap water, find that it's a fine hardness, then never test again. Borrow one if you can, although really they're super cheap anyway so it's not a huge deal.
>>
How do you keep shrimp colonies from going inbred and having jackass colors? Do you have to keep buying new ones? I know you have to cull the less colorful ones, but after a while they're all related still.
>>
>>2360689
Buying new ones periodically isn't a bad idea, although it's not necessary too often if you had a good start. Fish/invert inbreeding is not nearly as big a problem as in say... dogs.

A good start would be to buy five shrimp from four different sources. Make sure they are actually different sources, for instance I know for a fact that two of my local fish shops source many of their stock from the same place, especially inverts, and these two "local" shops are not even very close (takes about an hour to drive from one to the other).

Even the biggest breeders of fish buy lots of shit from other breeders. It's just the nature of the game... of nature.

Can someone who's owned bamboo shrimp before help me?
My bamboo shrimp aren't feeding in the current. They spend most of their time along the bottom of the tank, trying to pick up food from the floor. I've read that this means that they're hungry, and that there isn't enough food in the water column. I've ground algae wafers and daphnia to the consistency of baby powder, mixed it with water, and squirted it in their face, but that hasn't had any effect. As best as I can figure, I fed too much and they're pulling the microscopic food particles off of the bottom of the tank to eat. What should I do?

Some people do it to simulate things like tides and shit. Putting multiple circulators in a large tank, each on a controller to change direction and intensity, etc. People with really huge tanks have some very complex systems.

I'm sure there are pre-made systems that can do all that for you on a timer or even a remote app, but 100% sure it'll be insanely expensive.

Tiny update on the cat litter substrate. It's messy as fuck if you don't rinse it thoroughly. I went to rinse it thinking one or two rinses would be good, but it definitely wasn't. As I dumped out the rinse water, I noticed the clay separated into the more voarse bits on bottom and extremely fine particles on top. I figured it must be all the fine dust making the water so dirty and there was a ton of it. I'm only testing it on a small critter keeper box with some dwarf hair grass as a test for plants, so I didn't bother spending a lot of time rinsing. I scooped some kitty litter in and waited for it all to settle and become clear before planting. It takes hours for this to settle, and it still isn't at the point that Id like to plant yet. If you're going to try this, definitely pour the kitty litter in a fine strainer and run a hose through it outside.

Wow.

My mom is legally blind. She's actually a sculptor and jewelry maker. She does everything by feel, and wins awards for her designs. She gets by without help from anybody, is super fit, great with her grandkids, and could probably kick your ass. Should she be put down?

My father is disabled. Lost his legs in an accident. He gets around just fine with prosthetics or a wheelchair.

He is also a medical doctor who has contributed to Nobel Prize-winning research and has saved or improved countless lives. He also plays in a band on weekends. They perform ata lot of parties and events, and have a great time. He has an active social life, volunteers at his church, a family that loves him. He makes a lot of money, donates most of it to charity, and pays his taxes.

Obviously he's contributed more to society than you ever will, anon. Do you think he should be "put down" too?

Fuckin' normies, man. It must be sad to believe that if you lost your sight or some other bility, that you wouldn't be able to adapt, and life would become unlivable.

If that were true, we wouldn't have made it very far as a species.

All your views show are that you are weak and afraid. You lack the imagination to survive if you ever have to endure great hardship.

Many disabled people (or animals) endure great hardship and challenges on a daily basis, and still manage to thrive.

That is not true of all societies. In Tacitus' Germania, for instance, he describes how the Germanic tribes cared for those disabled from birth, and for the elderly and infirm. They believed that every life experience was valuable to the tribe in some way.

Tacitus was shocked by this, as it was a foreign concept to Romans. The Romans left sick infants and the elderly to die of exposure. As a historian, he wondered if this practice contributed to moral degeneracy in Rome.

In the Norse sagas, you can see how the descendents of some of these same Germanic tribes continued with this belief. There are many verses extolling the virtues of a life well-lived in spite of the hardships of disability.
>>
>>2361442
Are those pothos fairly new? When mine started growing new roots, every single one that grew while submerged are completely smooth and fairly straight, almost like a white stem going down.

My betta has gotten kind of obnoxious with them though. As they developed more and more underwater (both roots and stems and even some leaves), he went from super chill dude to suddenly territorial as fuck, defending his pothos canopy. Could also be the warmer weather though.

Yeah. Shrimp.

Any tank I have waiting doing nothing gets shrimp until I have some use for it. If I have to rehome the shrimp, no big deal. I can dump them anywhere; it's not like they affect bioload much. Extra breeding shrimp is always nice. Culls for some food for other fish, nice colored ones to add to my "good" shrimp tank or to sell. if it's just sitting there and you're already setting it up with some plants... might as well.

Naw but really, I've been watching his activity a lot. Besides moving a bit slowly so he doesn't bump into things too hard,he is pretty active. He'll scrounge the bottom for food, swim the edges of the tank and kind of mouth things that he touches, and swim/fight inthe current.

When we tap onthe glass for food, he gets really active and starts feeling around every inch of the ground.

I mean, from observing him, he isn't showing any signs of illness or stress.

it's probably ok for the fish but the reason i ask is i have wanted one of those exact frogs for a long time. when i was little, my grandma had a bunch of those frog pots in her garden, and i loved them so much she made a game of hiding them for me to find around the house/yard when i came over.

she passed away 7 years ago. i remember she had given me one of the frogs but i don't know what happened to it, must have lost it in a move somewhere.

i have since tried googling 'ceramic frog flower pot' and haven't found anything remotely similar to them, so seeing it in your pic made me remember.. is there any sort of manufacturer on the bottom or side of it or something? seems to me these frogs were popular in the 70s and all over the place but mainly exist where you said, garage sales and tucked in the back of older peoples' homes.

What happens when you underfilter an aquarium with enough seeded media to handle the fish? Or is it better to just move all that seeded media in an appropriate filter?

I'm just moving my bichir to a larger tank because he's getting too big for his 20G grow-out. It's being filtered by an aquaclear something and the next tank has an uncycled canister filter. Can I just shove all the old media inside of it and the bacteria will colonize the rest at an appropriate rate?

How many kuhli loach can you keep in a ten gallon? Tank is still new but I plan on keeping a betta, 10-20 shrimps and 4-6 kuhlis if the betta allows for it
>>
>>2362131
>Can I just shove all the old media inside of it and the bacteria will colonize the rest at an appropriate rate?
what happens is it takes days for the fish to produce enough ammonia to feed the bacteria and minutes for the bacteria to die from lack of ammonia.

what I've always wanted to see is someone put a fish in an uncycled tank and then monitor ammonia until it reaches levels capable of sustaining a cycle,
and THEN putting seeded media in the filter. I think you could probably do it that way.

otherwise the seeded media dies and you're cycling from scratch.
>>

none ideally

>>

No it takes days. What the fuck dude? If this was true my tank would go through a cycle everytime I do maintenance or new tanks I started with old media would take the 6 weeks to be cycled isntead of a few days like they always have.

Does anyone keep german blue rams? I have a 30 gal planted tank with 7 corys and 2 otos. I keep my ph low 7's or high 6's based on how accurate/well my pH controller for my CO2 is feeling.

The only concern I have is that I have heard that many rams you find at your LFS are rather weak and die even if parameters are OK. Is this true or is this just people being bad owners and blaming it on the fish?

>all the fish are producing soft, almost orange feces

I just want to know what the fuck happened to my fish. Sister swears to God that they were totally fine until yesterday which I find impossible to believe. She says nothing has changed and she's been doing water changes weekly like always. I checked the food she's been using and it expired in 2015. Could it have poisoned them or was it something else?

I did a water change, added alkalizing powder (idk name) and ich medicine, and put the healthiest fish in a separate tank. Is it possible to save any of my fish at this point? Pic related is not mine but it's how the least diseased of them look.

How could this have happened? What could have caused this? Right now I just want closure.

>>
>>2362716
>Your sister's a lying whore.
>>2362664
It's actually unlikely your sister's lying, except for the "just happened yesterday" thing, more likely she just noticed.

1) pH is not that easy to change in the long term without constant intervention. Your alkalizing powder will work until you do your next water change, for instance.
2) Test the pH of your tap water. Something could have happened to your source water that changed the natural parameters. Your family wouldn't have known and WTF could they have done about it?
3) Some kind of decoration in the tank is making a long term change, e.g. lots of crushed coral might look cool but it is one of the more effective ways to raise pH without intervention every time you water change.
4) Feel free to check the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. High enough of those and it will be a pH spike, which means not enough water changing or very poor cleaning/feeding habits (lots of detritus and never vacuuming it up when doing a water change).

#4 is most likely I think. She could be feeding too much and the water changes can't keep up, plus very lax cleaning.
>>
>>2362664
>>2362783
Also I should add, did you test pH first/only? First thing you should have checked would be ammonia, followed by nitrite, followed by nitrate. Fish are way more tolerant to pH than most think, however an ammonia spike could kill them in hours.

No, the expired food wouldn't have done it. Worst case with expired food is that it rots and your fish die from bacterial infection. It wouldn't change your water parameters (other than fish dying or not eating and causing an ammonia/nitrite/nitrate spike).
>>
>>2362787
>>2362783
>>2362664
And again, if you are treating pH, you are treating a symptom, not a cause, meaning your fish are still fucked even if you get your pH perfect.
>>
>>2362664
Fuck anon....I'm sorry :(
>>
>>2362570
>rather weak and die even if parameters are OK
This is true for all fish from LFS. You gotta know your source, and also why isolation before introducing to your community tanks is so widely recommended.

Just look at them. Do they look healthy? Are their colors vibrant? Are their scales and fins in good shape? Are they well-fed? If so, they're probably okay.

>Also, would they be fine with the listed species or are they best kept on their own.
There is a chance they will not be. Dwarf cichlids tend to make their home/territory on the bottom of the tank (Rams are no exception), so you have to be careful of mixing them with any other bottom-dwellers, ESPECIALLY if you plan on breeding them. They will really fuck shit up if there are things to defend.

Some people have had success but it's usually in a larger, heavily planted tank.
>>
>>2362736
Uh, just tell him it's a overstocked and rehome some, or upgrade the tank.

Start with daily water changes. People jump to overly medicating tanks too quickly and it's usually not very effective.

You can strip it and reseal it if you're really worried (which I probably would be), however considering Petco is having a $1/gal sale all month, I wouldn't bother.

Barring that, Craigslist.

Unless you're getting an insanely large tank or a specialty tank (weird shape, acrylic, low-iron, etc), the tank is the cheap part of the hobby.

>>2363648

Conversely, my betta went from being chill as fuck the past six months to suddenly becoming a douchebag when the weather got warmer.

>>2363610
>>2363376
I agree. In general you don't want anything in your tank you are not in control of. Pest snails will quickly get out of control. You could try to solve the problem later with assassin snails, but then the assassin snails will soon become the pest. Better to nip it in the bud.

They are not beneficial as they will wreck your plants.

If you really want snails for stuff like algae control, get nerite snails. Look cool, don't fuck up your plants, do quite well with algae, and they will not breed uncontrollably; their eggs cannot hatch in freshwater; must be brackish to hatch, so if you do want more, just transfer whatever they deposited eggs on into another tank that is brackish.
>>
>>2363670
>They are not beneficial as they will wreck your plants.

>>
>>2363512
How big of a tank? You could probably do pretty well with something as small as 10G, but I would suggest 20G long. Gives you a lot of options and you could get quite a few. Also 20G Long tanks are quite versatile.

Problem with schooling or shoaling fish in small tanks is that people tend to get bare minimum. If one dies then suddenly your group is subpar, or if a couple just don't want to group up. Getting more of the minimum for a school/shoal is always a good idea.

So I have my small turtle in a 55g with a few Rosy barbs, some rainbowfish and a school of danios, about 8-10 strong. The danios are picked off occasionally by the turtle, but the rest are left alone, in my opinion because of their size. I wanted just like 1 or 2 medium to larger fish just because it looks a little too empty sometimes. I'm not worried about the turtle bothering the fish, but I was trying to think of something that won't be picked on or pick at/eat my current fish.

Right now I'm thinking of angelfish, because they're able to hold their own and get relatively large but not huge. There are also lots of fake plants and driftwood for them to hide in or around. My only concern was that I have like 3 large filters running on the tank (it's extremely over filtered) which put out a lot of water flow. Would that stress out the angels?

If not angelfish, any other ideas?

What are your water params? There are a shit ton of cichlids to choose from that fit your need. I'm guessing a little too alkaline since you have rainbowfish. Are these boesemani btw? Those fish are cool as shit.

You could always just get more rainbowfish of a different variety.

Also you may want to just wait it out. Those rosy barbs get pretty fucking big.

Opinions on the 15 gallon version?

I like the filtration setup but I heard the pump is kinda loud and I'm not sure how much the front panel would distort the view, I'm not a fan of the normal side-to-side ones. Also there is like no info on the light so it's probably shit.

Looks pretty slick though.

Sp, overpriced or not?

Stop using products that are used to change parameters otherwise you're stuck using them for a long time. Keep doing water changes every other day keeping water clean. Do water changes as normal. How big is the tank in the first place?

ignore the sentence "do water changes as normal." I got ahead of myself

Also /aq/ is dead. Most of us moved to the discord.

Most rainbow fish can interbreed and create some ugly fish. Back in the day people were doing this and trying to pass them off as new species to make quick money.

Were the trolls that bad? That sucks. /an/ is usually a pretty cozy board.

UPDATE: I saved 8 out of the 10 fish. The survivors are ich-free and their tails are growing back. But I still feel like I need to vent.

I know I should've tested ammonia/nitrates, but the problem is, my sister "misplaced" the ammonia test kit I bought her recently. The pet store was closed so I only bought one after I had cleaned and treated the tank. Ammonia is fine now.

>>2363844
The tank is 100gal. But sister is a lazy cunt so she's been keeping it at about 50-60gal because she doesn't feel like carrying that much water.

She's also only been changing about 1/6th of that amount per week, because once again she's a lazy piece of shit.

I explained all her mistakes to her, but it didn't do shit. She responds to every little criticism with "If I'm so useless at looking after fish, why did you dump them on me?" I didn't "dump" them on her, she begged to be allowed to have them. I bought her all the supplies she might need and 3 separate books on fish husbandry, and she just throws them away or losing them. I have no idea what to do with the fish. My landlord won't let me keep them in my flat. I have no friends who keep fish. I don't want to sell them on Ebay to some retard who'll take worse care of them than my sister.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a porch? You could do two 50/60 gallon horse water trough ponds.

Landlord probably wouldn't mind that seeing as if the water somehow spills out, it would be outside and not cause any damage.

Otherwise, find someone that has a pond.

If you're willing to let go of the fish, I would highly suggest looking up local fish groups. I live in the DC/MD/VA area for instance and there's a ton of really cringey associations such as the Capital Cichlid Association which meets monthly (and a half dozen other groups in the area). More importantly is that these groups will have forums in which people swap/trade/buy/sell fish/equipment all the time, and they're all members of a hardcore aquarium nerd group so you know that it's going to someone who knows their shit.

You just missed a big round of fish conventions all across the country unfortunately but the groups should still be out there. What are do you live in?

Barring that you could also fish for someone on Craigslist locally, so at least you can check the person out.

If you really, really want to keep it in the family, you could go the extreme route and have some kind of automated water change system in place, or at the very least, a valve system so she barely has to do anything. Not sure if that house would be set up in a manner that you could accomplish that. Most are not. It would require dedicated water pipes and drain plus some kind of injection system for the conditioner if you don't have well water.

one of my male guppies is a huge asshole and harassing my female guppie
would it be ok to move the asshole male into my 5 gal with my betta? i can add a second male guppie to keep him company

Depends on the betta. Mine gets along great with them. Try it out. Worst case scenario, your guppy gets a taste of his own medicine.

After I did a water change today I measured my KH an hour or so later and it read 12. I know my city has pretty hard water but is this something I should be worried about?

None of the fish I currently have stocked seem to care but I am interested in getting a pair of GBR and am worried this may be too high.

If so, how do I go about lowering it?
>>
Okay, so I'm thinking of upgrading my 120g planted "med. tech" tank to high tech with pressurized CO2, and have two questions.

First, I have about 7 10lb oxygen tanks, and I've heard you can sometimes exchange them for CO2 tanks at welding supply shops and such, is this a common practice, and if they don't take them, are they worth anything?

Second, assuming I manage to get at least one CO2 cylinder from them, has anyone had experience with the SR Aquaristik Dual-stage regulator? It's on ebay for about $160 right now. I don't really care about it being dual stage really, I just don't want to have to worry about end of tank dumps killing all my shit.
>>
>>2364128
what's your pH?

The GBR shouldn't care much unless your pH is really high

You can use Acid buffer to lower it, and probably other things but that's what I'd use, but it will also lower your pH
>>
jesus why are testkits so expensive? Shit is there any way like to guess my parameters?I want to get shrimp so that seems dicey but if I buy some cholla wood and call it a day, how likely is it that i'd kill all my new shrimp?
