Bought some RCS and one is berried. Was going to put them in with my betta and ghost shrimp, but at 5 dollars a piece I figure I could stand to let them breed a bit. I don't have another tank set up right now and I am unsure if the other cherry is a male or just an unberried female. Is there any way I can make a separate area in my tank for them to breed in?

Are there any good guides for aquascaping online? I am specifically looking for small tanks. I'm just going to do a 3 gallon shrimp tank, and have only ever had basic gravel only tanks with barely any plants.

Right now he's got a pretty sizable plant in his bowl with leaves that he lays on, and underneath a sort of cave over his heater that I made with rocks.

He's usually laying on the leaves or scoping out the cave for food. Or staring at colorful things I put near his tank.

Nerite snail. Ditch the meme salt. The best way to get rid of fin rot is to keep water clean. This is going to mean small water changes about every other day or two days. Also if you're super worried get some Indian almond leaves. It'll stain your water with tannins but they aid in recovery for lots of fish. Almost like an antibiotic. You can find them. Cheap on eBay. This is from personal experience keeping many types of fish. It helps.

That's not a very good placement of the betta leaf bed. The manual says to put it like an inch under surface of water. Also you need to train your betta to use it by dropping the pellets above the leaf.
After I've put the leaf near surface and trained my betta he sleeps on the leaf every night.

Okay, so I've been thinking about doing my first planted aquarium (and really my only second aquarium, ever).

I've been doing research online, but everything I find is so inconsistent, so I thought I'd run it by you guys and get some more opinions.

I'm thinking about getting either a 10G or 20G as a start. I've heard bigger is better, but I move around a bit and help is few and far between. After researching substrates, I figured I'd go with Seachem Flourite, as it was the only one I found that didn't seem to leave the water permanently cloudy or raise the pH, according to reviews. I was thinking about using Java Fern and Java Moss as my plants, with a hardscape of wood or stone. As far as I can tell, you need liquid ferilizer to add with water changes for the Fern, right?

So besides a heater and filter, what else do I need to ensure this tank would be successful? What stocking options would you recommend? I was thinking a small school of neon tetras and a small clean up crew would fit nicely.

Anything I'm missing?

Pass on the neons if you're new. I'm pretty experienced and neons still die off on me unless you find a good captive bred source. White clouds are great and so are cherry barbs. Remember you can't plant the Java fern. You'll have to tie it to something until roots take hold. I use small lava rock. If you plant it the rhizome will rot and plant will die. With water changes don't add ferts for 24 hours. The water conditioner can me with it and make them less effective. Though if you don't plan on having more than those two plants you won't really need much. Shoot for low light if you're going low tech. Less problems.

Look for a 3-5 gallon aquarium kit.
You'll need a filter, a heater, and a thermometer. I keep my Betta tank temp at 75-78 degrees F. Decorate as you see fit, but keep in mind that plastic plants can be pokey and harm your Betta. Look for velvet plants or possibly aim for a live plant option. Just make sure your Betta has something to hide under/behind if it chooses to do so. Be wary about your filter. Bettas like very low flow. There are filters that have adjustable flow, but if you get one in a kit that isn't, it can be easily modified. Sometimes the kits come with good ones, sometimes they don't. You may have to read reviews beforehand.

Last and obvious things: If you're using tap water, you have to treat it. And look up the Nitrogen Cycle and cycling aquariums.

I think that's it. Good luck and have fun. Bettas are beautiful fish that are fun to watch.

IAL have some other antimicrobial properties that aren't found in other leaves. Oak have nearly as many, but with other types you're mostly only getting tannins. They're still good, just not quite as good.

they are fine together, just make sure you get actual ghost shrimp (palaemontes sp) and not whisker shrimp (macrobrachium sp) by accident. Whisker shrimp are more aggressive and might go after your red cherries.
Anecdote obviously but I've had 15 ghost shrimp to 3 red cherries and even with the 1:5 number advantage, they didn't bother each other.

I ordered 25 red cherries online, and in a week six have died. Is that about the normal fatality rate? I've checked my water parameters and they're fine, and the shrimp that weren't fron that batch are fine too.

Seachem Fluorite is the dustiest substrate I've ever seen in my life. CaribSea EcoComplete gives clear water and doesn't affect pH.
Fluval Stratum has worked better for me for plant growth. It can be dusty initially, but it helps if you add water very slowly to start, like by using airline tubing to siphon it out of another container. Any residual cloudiness gets cleaned up by the filter pretty quickly. Fluval Stratum will buffer the pH to about 7.0.

Neons are really hit and miss. They're something of a poster child for inbred farmed fish. In mine and others' experience it's pretty common for half or more of them to die pretty quickly for no apparent reason.
Glowlight tetras, white clouds, cherry barbs, and harlequin rasboras are all very easy and widely available. I've had trouble with male cherry barbs getting aggressive in smaller tanks, but that doesn't seem to be the norm. I'd recommend Amano shrimp and nerite snails for cleanup crew.

Java fern and moss are both good beginner plants, as well as anubias, crypts, water lettuce and ludwigia. All of those will do fine without ferts. If you search eBay for Osmocote+ root tabs, you can put those under the substrate for better growth.
For plants with rhizomes (java fern and anubias), it's recommended to leave the rhizome (fat root that all of the little roots are coming off of) exposed to the water column. The easiest way to do that is to simply tie it to something using fishing line or thread.

A light. If you're going for a really low-tech, low-light setup, then just about anything that isn't incandescent will do. This one amazon.com/dp/B0002AS59G with some household CFLs is a good low-budget option for a 10 gallon.

yeah.
what happens when you have too large a heater or a heater in low-flow areas is the thing heats up the water in a matter of seconds and then shuts off. Then a couple minutes later it's on again for a few seconds.

this cycle repeats all day, on and off for very short periods of time over and over and over. Since the thermostat on these things is mechanical (bimetallic), over that many uses it wears out and fails. So using an oversize heater or not having enough circulation in your tank makes your heater fail faster.

and failed heaters often destroy tanks. So either get a digital thermostat or run a heater appropriate to the tank size. If you want to be really careful get 2 heaters rated to 1/2 the tank size.

Last time I posted I announced I had a pleco dumped on me by a coworker.
I got the pleco acclimated to dragonfishes salt level and both or thriving now. Pleco like to steal dragons house, but dragon doesn't mine and he hides in his other hut while pleco cleans his house for him.
Dragonfish has started getting big, and as a result lazier.

Will he require less feeding or sparse feedings throughout the day? All I'm reading online is that when they get too big for pellets you need to switch them to beef liver but that doesn't sound very nutritionaly complete for a fish? How much beef liver and how often?

I don't know what other anons said, but I specifically remember telling you that while it would be okay short term if you acclimated it slowly, you should eventually rehome the pleco. I wouldn't suggest reacclimating it to freshwater just to put it in a two gallon tank. It should be fine in with the dragon goby until you're able to find a permanent place for him to go.

Sinbad poster here. Re-did the cory tank and I love it.

I also moved the shrimp to their own bowl because the cories kept running into them when they were looking for food or playing, and it would make them hide a lot.

Going to put some sand in Sinbads set-up today and get his plants in the ground.

One of my blue rainbowfish has a funny eye. He has been like this since I bought him.

He has a hard time with my vicious serpae tetra nipping off his tailfins. He also has a hard time getting any food at feeding time because he cannot see through that one eye, so i need to put him into a breeding net to make sure he gets something to eat.

His tailfin is getting more torn and smaller everyday because of nipping and bullying. My other rainbowfish are fine.

Might have to give the poor ugly asshole away so he can be in a tank with gentle tankmates.

Sorry, this is salvinia minima, not frogbit, it collects above my circulation pump, I assume because it's the quietest area water flow wise. I positioned it there to shade my crypt and anubia, as my light is too strong for my tank. I love the look of it, but it chokes my hornwort and I have to sperate them constantly or the hornwort will die.

Recommend or suggest me your favourite tropical top level/surface fish. I have a school of 20 serpae tetra and a pair of blue rams hanging out between the middle and bottom of my tank (55gal). Tank is heavily planted with lots of hiding places too.

So far i'm thinking either marbled hatchetfish, smaller kilis, or some sort of danios, although i've read different things about where the danios like to hang out.

Also how important will duckweed or other floating plants be for these surface dwellers? I used to keep it at about a 1/3rd of my tank but got tired of need to take over half of it out weekly during the water changes just to maintain the messy duckweed. Are there better floating plants?

My favorite top dwellers are African butterfly fish, but those serpae tetras would royalty fuck up their fins.
Danios or hatchetfish should be fine. Only certain killis would work, though, like golden wonder. Others would either not be top dwellers or have elaborate finnage that would be targeted by the tetras.

Salvinia is a great floating plant. It grows crazy fast, but it's a lot easier to deal with than duckweed since the leaves are much larger. You could also try water lettuce or frogbit.

But to answer your question mine still aren't even fully grown. But to reach sexual maturity it took them maybe about a month. Depends on water quality and foods. I keep empty ramshorn snails in my tank with a bit of egg shell. Helps with molting a bit and they molt quite often. I feed them just a tiny bit daily sometimes every other day. Mainly some algae wafer or some blanched spinach. They do eat on decaying plants though but not healthy ones. Once in a while I'll throw in a carnivore pellet or shrimp pellet split up so they don't fight.

You need more than one or two. More like five or eight. They'd be fine with guppies, but if you mix sexes with guppies you'll end IP with hundreds.

I'm a little concerned, shouldn't they be more active? They were active yesterday. I do small water changes twice a week and vacuum the gunk out, and the water is at 78 F. Test kits also come up fine.

I went into the local pet shop just to get some plants (because her shit is dirty and disgusting, and I wouldn't even get a feeder goldfish from her) and she happened to have some cherry shrimp for 2 bucks.

Since they were super cheap I went ahead and grabbed four, just hoping to breed some for betta food. Two guppies snuck in the bag as well, and my betta ate one, but the other is hiding out in his tank, so I'm going to catch it and move it to a one gallon till it's big enough to go in with the cories.

I am trying to take good care of the shrimp and hoping they will breed, because, goddamn, they are super hardy and very bright red.

Like, in the past week or so that I have had them, I have moved them three times, changed their water without doing any kind of drip, and put them in an unheated gallon bowl for two days, and they were fine. They went back in with the cories two...three days ago? They have been fine so far.

I'm wondering if they are still kind of asleep since it's raining outside, and that made the light in my bathroom a bit darker than normal.

No experience but not a bad price for the red cherries. Blue dream price could be a bit better. I've heard good things about them though. If he wants both let him know they'll breed and the babies will be brown wild types.

My tank sits at around 72 unheated and shrimp are active and breeding. As long as the waterfall isn't very strong if they have the option to be a distance away from it. Cherries are hardy. Depending how large the volume of water is I do a Dixie cup water change every other day.

Get a bunch of moss or naja grass. Naja grass grows crazy and gives the shrimplets room to hide and graze. Same with miss because they will hide inside of it. It would save room and be good for the tank.

Ah, I was under the impression that were they to breed, they'd have a chance of producing something like the Rilli types (pic related). Could you perhaps elaborate on that so when I try to inform him that he won't be getting neat babies I can actually sound informed?

It's just how it is. It's not impossible. You may end up with blue rilis. Then you'll have to breed those blue rilis with other blue rilis and keep culling all the brown wild types and undesirable colors. It would be easier to start with blue rilis. It's just that the genes want to revert back into wild types. It took me over a year to selectively breed red cherry shrimp into fire reds.

Well he's already agreed to give me all the culls as feeders, so he obviously plans to be active in the breeding process. I guess what I'm really asking is if someone's willing to take the time, are two different colors ever going to produce beautiful hybrid colorations or is it just mud?

It really depends. You can mix some shrimp and get some colors. But at first you'll get quite a few culls. Once you get a few of the colors you want he should put them in another tank and breed them a few generations (not long at all for shrimp) until it stabilizes. If he has the time and interest I would go for it. It's very rewarding.
