Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I was mad they kept pulling my boivianus out but they decided to lay eggs. They're about 2.5 inches.

Fishtank dreams are so weird. In.My dream, somehow my 29 gal planted turned into a gigantic tank full of discus after having a bunch of people over for a party. Super weird

>If one day I try out a reef tank, what would he a good easy starting size?
55g-100g is the best.

most people start with 30-40g because they're poor or don't have a lot of room. It costs less when your 30g reef dies, but it dies much sooner than a 100g would.
>>
>>2320731
Why do they die ?
>>
>>2320693
Now this is the kind of op post I like, it's got all the links. I'd like to shill a bit for aquaticarts.com, got some fish from them recently!
>>
>>2320738
Combination of factors.
they usually die between 1 and 2 years when the owner loses interest and stops keeping up on water changes and tests.

around that point there will usually be a catastrophic build up of nitrates accumulated over time. Perhaps some livestock will die and the owner won't notice or clean it out. Corals start to die off and the owner gets frustrated. Perhaps algae or cyano or dino will bloom. Or maybe it's something simple like a heater giving out or a pump dying.

It usually comes down to people getting tired of doing the work.
>>
>>2320743
I noticed this a lot with retards with too much money. They come in a switch to fresh and say it was too much work. It's honestly not that much more than most freshwater tanks.
>>
>>2320744
>It's honestly not that much more than most freshwater tanks
it's just less forgiving.
your average planted tank can survive years without a water change. Reef tanks not so much.

After hearing from so many people how much work a reef tank is, I was surprised when I actually read accounts from experienced folks saying it rarely takes more than weekly water changes and testing.
The startup and running costs can be a lot higher due to the extra equipment, so maybe people were confusing "difficult" with "expensive," which does seem to be a thing, at least in the States.

>Tfw shallow freshwater creek tank and the crayfish and clams do all the cleaning for me
>>
>>2320774
I usually encourage anyone that thinks it's easy to try it. Even simple tasks like water changes become much more time-consuming. From spending 2 hours running your RO to another 1/2 hour mixing salt, the entire process turns into this whole big thing. Then there's all the little stuff like cleaning filter socks and emptying skimmer cups and adding supplements. Not a big deal but forgetting any of them will kill your reef.
>maybe people were confusing "difficult" with "expensive,"
maybe. It's a fact the more money you spend the easier it is.

I'd guess people are using "difficult" to describe the level of risk though. Walking a painted line is easy, walking a tightrope 100 feet up is difficult. They're pretty much the same task, but one carries more risk.

reef tanks are more delicate, and they require more knowledge when things inevitably go wrong. The actual labor required varies depending on how much you spend though.
>>
>>2320774
It depends on the corals housed, the amount of food given per feeding, the quality of the filtration, and the size of the tank.
>>
>>2320775
Holy shit anon are you me? I have a creek tank, and a pond tank.
Creek tank is stocked with some dace, mosquitofish, and unidentified minnows as well as a grumpy crayfish. I have leeches and itty bitty fingernail clams living in the gravel too.
Working on getting a prickly sculpin in there
>>
>>2320767
This actually their normals colors believe it or not. I got mine from a breeder. None of his are washed out blues. All dark. I'm bretty happy with em but no room for the babies. The top of their foreheads turn light brown though when they start.
>>
>>2320786
The creek tank is filterless as well, just running an airstone
>>
>>2320786
I got round gobys and sculpins in my river near my house.
>>
>>2320790
I have plenty of sculpins in the rivers/creeks near me, I just haven't been able to catch one to ID is as a prickly vs mottled sculpin. Mottled sculpins get to be a foot long, and are very aggressive, so not an option. Pricklies max out at 6-8 inches, and generally go for worms and stuff.
>>
>>2320795
Where you stay? Michigan here.
>>
>>2320798
Oregon. Not the most fish variety, but plenty of inverts. A lot of our stream fish end up getting too big for tanks
>>

I am really just holding out for some rainwater or striped killifish though
>>
>>2320543

Thank you anon, I'll look into that. I'm going to start with just 5 cherry shrimp in the large bowl and plant stuff in both the vase and the bowl. If I can keep that up for a while, then I'll look into getting a betta later with a better set-up.

>>
>>2320858

i also have no experience with salt water tanks

d love to do a tank like that even with juviniles but would need to use a larger tank i think
>>
>>2320860
yeah, it would need to be light on fish and heavy on inverts. I just want to keep a mess of fireworms.
>>
>>2320860
if i were to do that id want to do more of a bottom dweller tank ,
fluke, skates, maybe dogfish, sea robbins, all juvenile

Buy her a nice 5 gallon tank, cycle it, then bring it over with some pretty gravel and plants in it. She'll love how it looks so much she'll want to move the fish in it right away.

Or, alternatively, show her pictures of tanks that are already like that, tell her how much it will cost, and do the initial set up for her but have her pay for the supplies.

The vase is just going to have a plant in it and maybe used as a quarantine.
>>
>>2320900
There are chemical additives you can use in the water to introduce the good bacteria into the cycle, or you see if a friend who also keeps fish would be willing to give you a used filter cartridge install into your filter which should have the bacteria already colonized in it. Or you could do both to really get it going.

>>
>>2321027
Then use your fucking sentences. And no they aren't worth it. If you can't be assed to feed your fish every other day/once a day then why are you keeping fish?
>>
>>2321027
>Are you dense?
Are you? "Meme" meant literally nothing in that context.

>I'm asking if these even have a use/value for money.
They work, they're convenient for if you're going on a trip, and they give your animals a more regulated existence (for better or worse). Putting flakes/pellets in a tank takes about 30 seconds, so it's not like it's going to make the tank any less "work." If you're forgetful enough that you don't trust yourself to do that much you'll probably have a hard time with regular maintenance like water changes anyway.
One of the most "rewarding" parts of aquarium keeping for a lot of people is having your fish interact with you, which is directly related to the fact that you are their food source. If a machine is feeding your fish, they're a lot less likely to take any interest in you.
Whether or not all of that is worth $30 to you is something you have to decide for yourself.

Motherfucker there isn't enough shit in there to cycle.

<5 gallons is unfit for animals of any kind. <10 gallons is probably unfit for fish.

Put plants in your vases and buy a real aquarium when you're ready for it. It's less expensive than you think and going the extra mile at the start will make everything easier down the road.
>>

I bought a betta fish and have him in a ten gallon tank. The tank and filter are new but I used some old gravel to help get the cycle started, a guppy carried over with the gravel so the betta does have a tank mate. The water has been treated with aquarium salt and the pH is around 7.05 but I don't know the nitrites or ammonia level. My concern is that I recently noticed the fins having black tips and i don't remember them being black. Does my fish have fin rot? (pic related)

>>
>>2321447
No tiger barbs with angels. Bichir will be small but it will get big and when a Cory bumps into it it will try to eat the Cory and choke on it killing them both. My Senegal went from 3 inches to almost 6 inches in 2 months,
>>
Just got a little school of serpae tetra.

Love these little fuckers. Their movement is really interesting. Kinda like some birds that move with jerking motions. Plus they've been very robust so far.

Neon tetra have been doing well too.

Guppies so-so. I have a female that looks super pregnant but nothing seems to be happening with her. Her male counterpart likes to harass her constantly.

As you may guess, these are smaller fresh tanks from 2.5gal to 10gal.
>>
>>2321456
i disagree with you on the barbs ive had barbs with angels in my own tank and they left eachother alone granted the angels were the biggest fish in the tank

>>2321447
as for the bichir if you really want one just get another tank idk the recommended size though
>>
Rvr
>>
>>2321460
Senegal are fine for 55 gallons for life as they rarely hit 12 inches. Mostly around 10 inches. But corys will bump into them and the bichir will snap at it to eat it. It's just there way as they have really bad eye sight. Barbs are just famously known as nippers. Most of the time they can't resist the Angels long ventral fins. Not arguing that some may not especially when given adequate space and cover.
>>
>>2321447
Get five line barbs, snakeskin barbs, or black skirt tetras instead of tiger barbs, and nix the bichir. Tiger barbs could work, but there's a pretty good chance they harass either the angelfish or the dwarf gourami.
Like the others said, the bichir is liable to eat the cories when it's full size.

>>2321460
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's a high enough risk and there are enough peaceful alternatives to tiger barbs that it's not worth trying imo.
>>
I know Neon Tetra are super popular but I can't be the only one who thinks they're just shitty Cardinal Tetra right?
>>
>>2321456

>>
>>2321537
Good job being irresponsible and ignoring all evidence.
>>
>>2321565
They seem to have a much deeper red and because it's longer it contrasts better against the blue stripe. Being a bit bigger is good too and they're not any less robust or most difficult to deal with than neons. And they still shoal, which is the best reason to keep any tetra.
>>
>>2320860
there are plenty of excellent native freshwater fish you could probably obtain within a few miles of your home in new england. Sticklebacks, smaller sunfish, minnows. MUCH easier to keep than any marine fish and you can plant the tank.

That's because people ask for advice and then get upset if they don't like the advice. Under anonymity, they can simply repeat this ad nauseum to bait. Problems:
>Can I keep a beta in a 1/2 gallon oil lantern I found in a ditch on the side of the road, I'll clean it weekly if I feel like it.
>Easily google-able questions
>Trolls that make poor bait
>People that still take the bait

Hello /an/, I'm looking into getting a 20 gallon fishtank for my birthday. What are some good fresh water fish for a first time owner? The only thing I know that I want so far is a Plecos, because I used to have two of them as a kid and thought they were really cool.
>>
>>2321764
You can probably keep one or two of the smaller variety of pleco (Bristlenose and Clown, mainly) as most plecos do grow to a large size and require a larger tank.

What would you round out this with? My long is in the mail. Ignore the filter value, it's filler as I don't have it to hand.
>>
>>2321764
A clown or rubberlip pleco would be okay in a 20 high. A bristlenose would be a lot better in a 20 long or 29 gallon tank. There are other small plecos, but they're usually expensive and hard to find.
If you get a pleco you should get some driftwood. They like to munch on it.

Other easy, hardy fish are platies, swordtails, peppered cories, white cloud mountain minnows, zebra danios, harlequin rasboras, Bolivian ram cichlids, and thick lip gourami.
>>
>>2321793
A single, larger fish might be interesting to top it off. Is there something like that for a community tank?
>>
>>2321793
Those 4 dwarf gourami are probably going to fuck with each other unless you manage to get 3 of them as females.
Sparkling gourami would be better if you want multiple gourami together.
Personally I'd get smaller cories (pygmy, dwarf, habrosus, julii, panda) and more of them (6-8).
Do you want more small fish or another "centerpiece"? For small fish, either a couple more cardinals or some endlers. For another centerpiece, one or two rams.
>>
>>2321798
I've shyed away from Rams because I don't know much about them. Which ones would work? The gourami are rough, I used to keep two blue gourami one male one female in my old 30gal that were great. I like Albino Cories and they're stocked nearby at a good place, is four not enough?

german blue rams look really nice. i have both gbr and neon dwarfs but desu the rams are way better the dwarfs just seem brain dead doing nothing
>>
>>2321804

>>
>>2321805
pairs 1 m 1 f is preferred and you need hiding places and cover like plants. they will have their own territory but if its a mf couple it shouldn't be a problem
>>
>>2321807
Removing two gourami as suggested and adding the rams takes me to 80%. I could still do with a 3/4 inch capping fish.
>>
>>2321808
i suggest a red tail or rainbow shark but its up to you
>>
>>2321810
I've kept a red tail before, they used to chase my neon tetras and barbs.
>>
>>2321802
Glosso, monte carlo, moss, crypts.

>>2321801
German blue rams are prettier, but more delicate. Bolivian rams are less colorful, but really easy to care for. Either one is perfectly fine alone, but if you can get a mated pair, that'd be best. Getting two at random (regardless of sex) won't guarantee that they'll get along particularly well. Apistogramma cichlids would be another alternative.

>>2321808
If you replace the dwarf gourami with thick-lipped gourami, they get larger and are more peaceful. It also might be easier to find females. Siamese algae eater, rubberlip pleco, Yucatan molly, or a male swordtail are also options.

Sweet. Just came to /an/ for the first time to see if there were threads for fish and aquariums.

Bought my first Betta a couple months ago.

I got a 2.5G aquarium from my uncle randomly for Christmas. It was only after purchasing the fish that I really started to research aquariums and keeping. Unfortunately I fell for the oldest shit in the book when it came to the fish, thanks to Walmart and other incompetent pet store employees.

The 2.5G is set up and cycled to the best of my ability. I put gravel and silk plants in there for now. Betta's looking really healthy, too. It had a mild case of finrot when I got it from the local store and now its fins are looking sharp as hell.

And yes, I'm planning on upgrading the tank in the very near future.
>>
>>2322218
Give him some stimulation while you're waiting to upgrade, that way he isn't completely bored in his tank. A marimo ball that he can move around and some live food like a small cherry shrimp from time to time would be good.

if you're used to keeping planted tanks that cost less than $500 then yes.

you will find the expense and difficulty levels significantly higher than you're used to.

if you're used to blowing a thousand dollars sometimes on stuff that won't last then it's not particularly expensive. Nor is it particularly difficult compared to rebuilding automatic transmissions or remodeling your kitchen.

it's all relative. I usually tell people if they're not comfortable taking $500 out of their wallet and lighting it on fire they're not ready yet.
>>
>>2322199
10 gallons is okay for an m/f pair.
Snails with lungs are okay in a bucket since they'll just breathe from the surface. That includes ramshorns and most pond/bladder/tadpole snails. Keeping the bucket in bright light is useful, since it grows algae for them to eat. Also providing lots of flat surface area for them to lay eggs on.

>>2322215
You mean one you can drop in on the bottom of the tank?
eBay has them if you search for sponge filter. Like pic. They don't really make a "current." The bubbles just come up to the surface.
Box/corner filters and sponge filters that suction cup to the glass have a spout that directs the water flow and makes more of a current.

blues get to about 6-8" whites I think are smaller like 4" max. Grow quickly to about 80% max size in like 2 years then slow down considerably, reaching "huge-ness" over a period of many years.

For any fish, bigger is better. Bigger tanks are easier to maintain and they just look better, honestly. It's not like you can give your fish too much of a good life. A 10g is fine, but if you can go bigger go ahead and do it. It also leaves ample room to expand if you ever want to.

Are cherry shrimp more affected by changes in water quality than actual water quality?

When I first set up a shrimp tank I would autistically check the stats, do a 50% water change every week, clean my filter every few weeks and add shrimp minerals to the water.

I'd get frequent tank crashes and dead shrimp

These days I may top off the water if I can be arsed and haven't cleaned my filter in 7 months. All my shrimp are fine and breeding, I've never seen a dead one. And I've got some super inbred fire reds which are delicate.

Anyone here ever set up a jarrarium?
I was thinking of setting one up as my first "tank" between now and the petco sale coming up so I have a bit of practice. I found a glass vase to use and I was thinking of a few plants and maybe a couple shrimp if I can get cycling down.

Ah. Well, could I treat a 1-2 gallon vase/jar as a miniaquarium for plants and snails? Or some other simple invertebrate?
>>
>>232297>>2322973
Damnit, I just had a whole post written outfor you and my phone fucked up.

So short version-trying to do something similar but with a 2.5 gallon. API Safe Start to help with cycling. API also has a product to declorinate your tap water. 1 gallon is only good for a short quarantine area and some plants. They make tiny filters and heaters for "betta" tanks, but don't put a betta in anything less than a 5 gallon, but preferably 10 (it's easier up keep too)

Test the heater ina seperate tank of a couple gallons before you have anything live, so if it breaks you don't fry everything.

Ignore the jackasses giving no advice, but don't brush off the jackasses trying to give advice.

Research basic care sheets. Give the tank a week (or at least a few days) even with the treatments before adding live things.
>>
>>2322995
>started a bit of a shitstorm

No, some random asshole fueled it. I just shut the hell up and did more research, only to come back and see some jackass telling people to fuck off to posts that I had asked for info on. I was little disappointed in the last thread but wasn't trying to argue with anyone. If anything I was just frustrated because I had (mistakenly) thought I did all this research over two weeks and knew what I was in for, only to find out the research I had done was 90% false.

What would be most ideal species of sea jelly to keep in captivity?

What would the tank size/expenses/special concerns need to be for said species?
>>
>>2323010
Moon Jellyfish, as far as I can tell.

There are special tumbler aquariums you can buy. Not sure about price. Probably 2-300 hundred. And ($20) per fish if I recall.

I looked into keeping them, and it doesn't seem worth the hassle. They only live a year and a half or so, and that's at optimum care. The tanks are a bitch to clean. Plus they're very finicky animals
>>
>>2322991
They aight. Good enough for those entering the hobby.

I've always wondered if you has some really tall tube shaped tank and made a sling to keep it in place if man o wars would do well in captivity.

>>
>>2322973
Not necessarily a jarrarium but I keep a bunch of aquarium plants on my windowsill. They're just floating in bottles.

>>2322991
They're decent. The light is only good enough for very low light plants, but that's the only slight complaint I have about them.
Get at least the ten gallon kit. It's the smallest size that comes with a heater and it's worth it for that alone.
>>
>>2323000
Nice Trips.

First, thanks for the advice. I have a tiny filter from my room-mates old betta tank I could use. I'll keep hunting for a larger/wider container for it, hopefully something that can be sealed. Also, don't worry, I would never put a fish in such a small tank. It would be too cruel.

Do you have any suggestions for plants I could put in? I was looking at duckweed, but from lurking I hear it grows out of control.

This is a different question but has anyone kept a leech? My local baitshop sells them and they take forever to die. I'm only worried what to feed them, as I read a lot of leeches are scavengers. Also, could they just crawl right out of the tank if I don't seal it super well? Like an octopus or a slug?
>>
Okay so I just had my Betta die on me after 5 years of owning him. Since he died in there do I need to do a 100% water change and recycle the tank before adding a new fish as a replacement, or can I just go ahead and add a new one in?

I've got one that I've had for a few months. They're smart. If you don't have a very interesting tank with lots of things to explore they'll get bored and go crazy. She surfed on the glass of her 10 gallon for a few days before I changed the hardscape to be more dense with tunnels and such to explore. They also don't tend to eat any prepared fish food. Mine hunts snails that I take from my work (or LFS) but I should probably also mix in some brine shrimp and bloodworms to help add more nutrition to her diet. They also can be mean and fin-nippy. Males will be more agressive and territorial. I haven't had this problem as she's alone in her tank. They're a lot of fun but are best kept in a species tank.
>>

>>2323080
That's pretty good considering most aren't even given the chance to make it past 6 months. How was he doing physically in his older years?
Also, if it was old age, and he probably did, I don't think you'd have any reason
>>
>>2323221
*To clean and recycle the tank. Oops.

>>2322973
It'd be infinitely harder to learn how to cycle and maintain water parameters in a tiny bottle of water. It's one thing if you're trying a 5g or something, but a jar? Probably not a good plan. Bigger the tank, easier it is to maintain. I'd say get a tank that's at least 5 gallons with bigger being better, and some simple fish like a betta and/or tetras. I'm biased because they're my favorite, but I'd suggest a betta in a 10g. They're pretty hard to kill and they've got a lot of personality for little 2 dollar fish.

Its also been such a pain trying to get rid of the stray roots that have been growing everywhere and sticking out of the sand.

i think it would look nicer if the plants were bordering the edges more, personally. makes it easier for the eyes to focus on one area (the middle)

it's a good idea to group like plants together too, since you have different varieties. all opinion of course but i feel my tank looks better being a circle but also having similar-looking plants near each other

Look up aquascaping on youtube. Helped me a lot, personally. You need to make it more natural and flowy, but right now it just looks like a box with plants in the middle. Move some to the side, group some together, etc etc

>>
>>2323534
Tanins or something. I like the colour of that. My tank used to be blackwater. I don't think my old pieces of wood have much left to contribute.
>>
>>2323307
For filters, either a Fluval AquaClear hang on back, or a SunSun canister type.
The cheapest effective light you could get would be a regular dual tube fluorescent T8 or T12 shop light. Personally I have a Beamswork LED fixture (the 1W per LED model) on my tank and it's working well for me so far.

>>2323329
You can ask for a 24-96 hr heat pack if it's going to be too cold. It usually an extra $1-3.
>>
Had some cyno take over the middle of my tank.

cleaned my filter, tubing, increased flow, oxygen, and went out and bought a A80 Tuna Sun light to replace my old light.

Has anyone used Chemiclean before? Really wanna get rid of this shit quick it looks horrible.

>>
>>2323557
Not yet. I have some extra bits of wood i could tie the moss onto. A carpet sounds so much nicer though. I will need to buy some mesh for that right?
>>
>>2323561
No.

Quarantine tanks don't need to be fancy. Go find some kitchen tupperware and take care of it. You don't need a filter if you change the water every day. Buy a cheap heater.

You're all set.
>>
>>2323538
Easy enough to get rid of it if you don't like it.

Seachem purigen can remove tannins.
>>
>>2323561

I even did this with shrimp.
>>

>>
>>2323571
yeah but how will this effect my other fish? I got a dwarf gourami, 3 tetras, a couple harequinn raspboras and a bristlenose pleco.
>>
>>2323574
Just do what >>2323565
said.

You can set up a .5G QT for $13.

Do an aquarium salt treatment and you don't have to worry about the other fish.
>>
>>2323572
pretty much anything small and peaceful i'd think. Tetras, rasboras, cories, etc don't seem like they could eat shrimp. As long as they're temp compatible w/ the shrimp, I can't see a problem with those.
>>
>>2323577
I'm guessing the bristlenose is how it got in the tank, since they're spotted it was probably carrying and I couldn't tell.

after giving them the once over it looks like they all have ich. Can you do salt treatment in a planted aquarium or do you have to just take all the fish out and let the tank sit for a while until it's all dead.
>>
>>2323582
If it's the whole tank, do the temp treatment.

Keep it to +2 degrees F every hour or so for a slow acclimation.

Otherwise, you'd need a larger QT for all the fish. You could still just go buy a cheap tote or something that would substitute as the tank. Just make sure you do daily water changes and have a heater for it.
>>
>>2323586
okay so just keep the temp in the 80s for a week?

I guess either it kills the ich and it's all good or it kills the fish and I start over. Either way, eh.
>>
>>2323496
Get some hardscape anon
>>
>>2323518
What substrate is that? It looks nice and natural.
Also, I'd suggest following the rule of thirds or whatever. I'm too tired to reiterate it accurately, but it's basically "make everything (large rocks, groups of plants, pieces of driftwood) in thirds or other even numbers" because blah blah the human eye breaks it up if it's even or some shit. Sorry I can't help more -- there's good videos on it, just keep looking. Hardscaping would help too.

Anon with the 2.5 bowl here.

I went out earlier this week and got some of that API Quick start stuff and put it in on yesterday. While I was out I also snagged some random plants and through them in the water. I didn't really adjust much else and was kind of just going to wait till next week and move stuff around and get a small handful of cherry shrimp.

WAS being the keyword there.

My mother-in-law, god bless her soul, misunderstood me when I said I decided -against- getting a Betta just yet because I wasn't sure if I could take care of it, and somehow she misinterpreted that as "anon couldn't afford to get the fish yet"...

So I came home today after work to find a little blue fish in a cup sitting in front of my laptop with a note that says "named her Dory for you, haha. Love you anon"

It's fucking winter. House gets fucking 50 °F at night. Pets shops and supply stores have closed already because it's a small town.

Two hours of frustration later and an emergency run to the next town to get a heater and and filter, and I now have a fish I wasn't ready for.

Anyone want to help name him? He's pretty and likes to follow hands.
>>
>>2323745

So...how fast can I cycle a ten gallon if I move some (all?) of those plants into it with that Quick Start stuff and the filter from this bowl?

How goddamn poor are you that she thought you couldn't afford a 2 dollar fish, though?
I second your mother-in-law's name choice. she sounds like a nice lady.
>>
>>2323754
honestly, I wouldn't be too worried about putting a betta in a newly established tank. Put as much water as you can stand from the old tank, including the plants and some gravel, and you should be pretty well off. Just check your levels for a few days to a week and make sure they're not horrendous if you're that worried.

Are shrimp out of season?

I wanted some amanos or rcs, but none of the LFSs around me ever seem to have any despite having spots for them. Petsmart only has ghost shrimp, but even those haven't been in stock for quite a while. None of these fuckers will take special orders, and we just had a cold snap, so I'm too paranoid to have any shipped straight to me right now.

Am I just stuck waiting until it gets warmer to have some shipped?

So, shrimpanon here, I told my roomate about my idea of keeping some awuatic plants and shrimp in a jar and he brought this... floorvase or
something home from a thriftstore. It's about 3 feet tall, 3 inches at the narrowest, and 8-9 inches wide at the bottom. I'd say it's at 2.5-3.5 gallons, and he seems pretty adamant about putting aquatic plants and maybe a fish in it. What can I put in this? Any plants/shrimp or snails that could handle a tall vertical tank? He seems to want a fish, but no fish could live in this, right?

Made a newbie mistake and gave into buying green star polyps and putting them on the main rock. I have a bubble coral and frogspawn positioned around both ends of of the green star polyp mat as such. Will they do an adequate job keeping it under control or will the GSP just grow over them both eventually? Any alternatives to controlling GSP besides scraping or cutting?
