Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I also am getting rid of my neon tetras, they seem to hate my new circulation pump. What is a small fish that would complement WCMMs and enjoys decent water flow?

Just picked up a new tank for a family member's turtle (they don't take care of the poor thing). What's a good filter for turtles? It's about a 40 gallon tank.
>>
>>2310605
Canister filters are largely more ideal than HOB filters due to the lower waterline (unless you have an above tank basking spot) and even then, they're still fairly weaker than canisters for picking up turtle waste.

Also it's best to get 2x-3x the filtration than there is water in the tank as turtles are messy as fuck (a 40 gal would need one rated between 80-120 gallons of filtration power)

As for specific filters, there's a lot of options. SunSun canisters are generally cheap as fuck compared to most and are fairly good quality. They're a bit of a bitch to prime for turtle tanks though
>>

Do Siamese algae eaters have any predatory instinct being herbivorous? Or are they omnivores that will eat small creatures if they present themselves?

I ask because I am wondering if I can put some in my shrimp tank.

I have some in my main tank and they will eat fish flake. But I don't know if that's a sign of predation
>>

The cycling one in particular gets dropped really frequently, presumably by the old geezer who lurks here for the specific purpose of getting triggered by anything relevant to this century.

But yeah if I end up making the next one I'll put some links together.

What would be a good size for a planted tank with some neocaridina and Thai micro crabs? I was thinking a 10 gallon or a 20 gallon long.

That one. SAEs quite like meaty bits.
Stick to otos and snails for shrimp tanks.

Sae's can become aggressive towards tankmates when they mature.

Also, used Ada aquasoil for my mc carpet but it is so easily stirred and forms small dust clouds. Should I have capped it with gravel or will the carpet roots stabilise the soil over time?

Hell if the conditions are good you'll have to trim it to prevent it from taking over other plants.

Does this reef salt I grabbed at petsmart make brackish water? I'm housing red claw crabs and originally had aquarium salt, but then read aquarium doesn't actually make brackish water. The back of the package says it's good for invertebrates.
>>
>>2310928
Manzanita is really easy to break into pieces if it's too big for the tank. You can try bridal supply stores, too, if there are any around you.

bloomsandbranches.com has some good prices.

http://www.bloomsandbranches.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BBSBM18&gclid=CjwKEAiAlNbEBRCv9uy4j4SWrgwSJAB5MqJFhuRIipvtTYOFSbsv7aR0wm3zcEfqzkiNPTlRiSM6JBoCDQzw_wcB

You could have gone for the regular purple version. That one has added minerals and whatnot for corals. It won't hurt anything, though
>>
>>2310946
>>2310934
This guy is right. You can switch to the purple the next time you run out of salt.

If you are making brackish water, do you have a way to measure the specific gravity? It's important you don't make it too different each time you make a water change. Stability is important.

Zebra/leopard danios are the conventional companion to whites clouds. If you don't already, you could also get some gold white clouds for a bit of variety.

Also these bad boys don't require sand if you have sufficient plant cover which I do. But I'm looking at topping the Eco complete.
>>
>>2310583
In general you should feed your fish several small meals each day.
>>
>>2310615
Spiderwood shouldn't take too long. A week or two should be sufficient.
>>
>>2310906
They'll do okay, but every species of cory is more enjoyable in larger schools. For tanks under 20 gallons, any of the 3 dwarf species of cory are ideal.

That being said, they add virtually nothing to your bioload, so keeping 4-6 in that tank shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>2310910
Always use water conditioner. The conditioner is there to remove the chlorine/chloramines in your tap water. Those things kill your filter bacteria.
>>
>>2311372
That could be said of a bunch of different color morphs. Personally I just find the wild-type coloration to be so much more interesting and aesthetic than the monochrome "electric" ones.
>>
>>2311487
The acaras are the only electric blue one I enjoy. The others not so much. At least they aren't named like reptile morphs "tooty fruity rainbow unicorn sparkles Abrahams morph"
>>
>>2311487
Doesn't monochrome mean one type of color? I'm just being a smart ass because I see at least 3 colors. Also I have actual autism.
>>
What tankmates would you guys choose for a 36g? I'm setting one up so I'd love to hear any ideas, and it seems like most hobbyists enjoy talking about setups anyway

+1 for white clouds. Guppies like warmer water and will get out of control pretty quick if you have males and females. White clouds are super cool fish too.

>>
>>2311528
I can probably deal with out of control
I can feed the fry to my other larger fish or start a second aquarium ( I've got a bunch laying around
>>
>>2311535

I have an extra 10 gallon and a 5 gallon.

How possible would it be to set up a simple reef in either one? No fish or anything really, just a small mini reef. Also if doable, what am I looking at in cost not counting the actual coral?

Would be my first foray into salty after a few years with a 40BR planted etc.

Just tip for finnex users, I have the planted plus, and idk how different it is from the 24/7 model, but I've had water condensate/splash into the light getting water on the plastic lcd cover. This is a terrible design and WILL cause your led to fail prematurely due to corrosion.

2 things

1.you can prevent water from getting inside the led area by sealing the led cover up with silicon around the edges, as I did and water is no longer an issue.
2. Unscrew and take a peak at the power supply provided with the light, off of course. And look for any corrosion or shitty extra flux remaining ok the circuit board. Alot of these are manufactory poorly and sit awhile before being bought. Cleaning a small amount of corrosion of your LED psu can help it last MUCH longer.

>>2312571
lots of possibilities. Could be normal outgassing from new tap water. Could be some fermentation going on with bacteria in the water column. Could be an artificial or natural foaming agent in the water. Could be air bubbles sucked into an impellor. Could be coming off of plants, algae, or even substrate bacteria.

lots of possibilities, no way to know for sure which is happening without a lot more info.

Has anyone here owned crabs before? This is my current 10 gal crab tank. Next year my roommate is going To use his 55 gal tank and I need some help. We were going to switch to housing red claw crabs and need more of a terrarium type set up. But since red claws are brackish and need land I don't know what to use in my big tank. This tank has really shitty fake plastic plants and rocks, but I was wanting to get a large center piece of driftwood that partially sticks out of the water because they love to eat drift wood. I also need plants that they will like and that can grow in brackish water. Please help?
>>
>>2313071

What's the best type of tropical bottom feeder that will help clean my gravel? My roommate constantly overfeeds our fish and there are flakes all in the gravel it's disgusting.

We've got a 10 gallon walmart tank with 2 suckers, a rainbow shark, an angel fish which I think is pretty much dead, some sort of chichlid and an albino one I can't remember all the names sorry. My roommate bought all this stuff and threw it together a couple days ago without following the instructions so yeah it's a shit show. He didn't even rinse the gravel so it's kind of murky

>>2313108

>>2313090

Cichlid looks like an Aulonocara. You've got way too fucking many fish in there for a 10 gallon tank. Jesus Christ. Why don't people fucking google shit before they buy it?

All of your fish will grow to be too large to live in a ten gallon tank. Most of them are also very aggressive and need space to establish territories. Return them and start over, or wait for them to die.
>>
>>2313160
Most people don't see fish as pets. Just ornaments. That's why you have soccer moms decorating there houses with vases with goldfish. My girlfriends aunt bought her son a goldfish to teach him responsibility. They kept it in a vase.
>>
>>2313165
The irony is honestly unbelievable.
>>
>>2313160
yeah no kidding man, my roommate just bought em all and threw them in. not sure how i could return his fish, he bought them. I had a 20 gallon tank as a kid so i know some of the basics but this guy just thinks its a decoration as the anon above said.
>>
>>2313160
also i thought it was roughly 1 fish per gallon? Or does that only apply to tetras and other small guys
>>
>>2313170

"Rule" is 1 inch of fish per gallon, and even then that's a shitty rule because a ten inch fish is going to be fucking miserable and shit wayyyy too much for a ten gallon tank.

>>2313169
Tell your roommate that he's going to kill all of his fish if he doesn't return them and get something different. Then wash your hands of the situation and tell him that you'll have no part of feeding or cleaning it if he doesn't listen to you.
>>
>>2313165
This shit pisses me off so much. Walmart shouldn't be allowed to sell animals because the people working there don't know fuckshit about the animals that they're selling.

People at petco etc are honestly just as bad if not worse because you can assume that they know that a goldfish is going to shit itself to death in a vase but sell it to dumbass moms anyway.
>>
>>2313171
alright. so currently its
>2 plecos
>1 angel (sort of, i dont think its returnable)
>1 albino cichlid
>1 other cichlid
>1 rainbow shark

what all should i return? two plecos are definitely too many, and i think the cichlids have to go.
>>
>>2312627
no , little elss than half a year old

did a 40% waterchange a it pretty much cleared up
>>
>>2313175
Literally all of them. I'm not even kidding. Just for the fish well being. Or try and convince to move up to a larger tank. Angels get more tall than long, plecos you already know, the African cichlids may eventually kill each other and other tank mates, and the rainbow shark needs lots of swim space. I'm not an elitist just minimum care should be at least provided:
>>
>>2313175
All of it dude.

>Malawi Cichlids need at least 30gallons
>Angels need 20
>Shark could probably be okay alone but would be better off in a 20 gallon community tank
>Plecos get way too fucking big for a ten.

Take em back to walmart and tell them to go fuck themselves.

From there we have a few directions we can go. Do you want a school of smaller fish that have an interesting group dynamic? Or one to three larger fish?
>>
>>2313195
>>2313193

I think I want a small school of tetras and a couple corys

Also keep in mind the fish I return are just going to go back to Walmart hell and probably die there. There are dead fish in those tanks like... I can't see how my 10 gal is worse than an overcrowded Walmart tank
>>
>>2313208
The question is do you want a cool aquarium or not? They're dead either way. They were dead the moment they arrived at walmart. Keeping them isn't going to save them unless you get two 40 gallon tanks.

A school of 9-11 ember tetras and 5 dwarf or pygmy corys would make a nice tank. Amano shrimp or nerite snails too if you'd like. Get rid of the spongebob shit and the fake plants. Get a good piece of driftwood and some amazon swords, anubias, or java fern.
>>
>>2313218

Tell him straight up: if you're going to be involved with it at all then you're going to do it your way. If he's not 100% on board then just walk away. It's not worth the frustration.

Java fern and anubias you can rubber band to drift wood or a rock until roots take hold so you don't have to worry about expensive nutrient rich aquascaping soil. You'll probably want to change the substrate anyway though, corys dig through the sand to eat and the shit you've got will fuck their shit up.

https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40457
>>
Would Anubias be able to survive in a tank with 2 5 inch koi? They tore ALL of my carpet up so I learned that lesson but would Anubia be hard enough that they couldn't uproot and destroy them?

Yes I know koi shouldn't be in aquariums, no I dont have anywhere else to put them or the money/time to make a pond. I need a selection of Aquarium plants that Koi possibly wont destroy. It doesn't bother me that their tank is bare but if I dont put SOMETHING in it soon, my grandmother is going to head to walmart and fill the tank with ugly plastic shit
>>
>>2313243
Get rid of them if the tank isn't proper size. That simple. But they usually don't eat the tougher plants.
>>
>>2313243
Also you can't plant Anubias. Tie it some lave rock or something that will keep it down.

Breeding behavior of cichlids is the tits dude get six apistos or rams or kribs and let them pair off and watch your fish friends' offspring grow up in your tank. You might even be able to sell their young to your LFS for a little cash on the side.

My little HOB filter makes a lot of noise once the water level drops just below the outflow edge, and since it's on a 5gallon it evaporates really quickly.
It's louder than my damn sponge filter and it's driving me crazy.
I'm thinking about attaching one of these coarse scrubbers to the bottom edge, so the water would have to trickle through it and fall a bit more gently; so it doesn't sound like someone is constantly pissing in the corner of my bedroom. It's made of nylon, so it won't poison my tank.

Any other filter silencer ideas?

Marine reef master race here. Used to breed fish for sale to local shops. What the fuck is there to know about cycling a damn aquarium? At any rate there has certainly not been any new science cropping up about it in like 40 years.

Basically I am asking for a tall deer about what drama could there possibly be?? The cycle hasn't changed and nothing new has been (or will be) discovered about it. Then again, I still hear people talk about using damsels to cycle tanks so nothing should surprise me I guess. Be forewarned that that idea is not "old"...it's just "dumb" and has widely been considered dumb for decades. As in, I have magazines from the 80's that mention it being dumb.

If you want tiger barbs, get 5 or 6 so they're less likely to nip at other fish. The convict cichlid and rainbow shark aren't likely to put up with too much shit from them, so it's pretty unlikely you'll have trouble there. In all seriousness reefers are doing more damage to the oceans wildlife than freshwater is. There's been zero impact on populations when they take the fish from the wild. Fish that have become extinct in the wild are thriving in the aquarium hobby. Fishing with cyanide kills the corals around it and a lot of the times the fish don't make it. This is why the saltwater hobby is looked down upon by scientist and wild life researchers.
>>
>>2313754

Oh I'm definately not denying the large negative effects of the saltwater hobby. I'm only denying that it is easier to keep saltwater fish than freshwater fish. Of course there are the varying difficulties between individual species but saltwater has way more things to look out for to keep stable water parameters and a proper system.

When are my CPDs going to get some color? I've had this tank setup for about a month and a half. Originally got them when they were half this size.
>>
>>2313794
Depends on substrate color and background color usually. Darker the better color on them.
>>
>>2313794

This >>2313811
Throw a black background on there and plant more green plants. Sometimes "warmer" lights make them show better. Background is the first thing you need to do though. A lot of times fish feel more comfortable and safe with a background on the tank so they'll be more active and show better colors anyway, on top of the fact that the black contrasts their coloration to make it show better.

I'm autistic and it annoys the fuck out of me.

Maybe I'm either more or less austistic, but I don't mind things like the skull, castle, and most plastic plants.

It's the neon colored gravel and shit, those tacky signs, or anything themed after shit like Spongebob that are impossible to actually make look good as they stand out way too much. At least the other shit can looks like nice as ruins if you have plants and diatoms grow on them.

I have a 20 gallon long tank and want to get into planted tank
recommendations for good beginner plants and fish to put in?
>>
>>2313897
Good backdrop plant is jungle val, good midground plants are crypt species, wisteria, guppy grass. Dwarf sag is a great foreground carpeting plant.
Any fish that does well in a non-planted tank will likely do even better in a planted tank. It is more a matter of what fish to avoid. Having plants also lets you increase the bioload. Fish to avoid are any that dig, or eat plants.
Substrate is really important as well. If you have a low-nutrient substrate (gravel, sand) then you will need to have a high bioload to provide nutrition. If you have a high nutrient substrate (aquasoil, dirt) then you will need to compensate by either heavily planting, or having a lower bioload.

Lighting is obviously essential. I find cheap plant lights (fluorescent tubes) work great.
If you really want to get into it, research fertilizers and CO2 systems in depth, they can all be DIY'd. These systems are how you get insane tanks like pic related. Otherwise you are limited to plants that do well in non-supplemented or "low tech" tanks.
>>
>>2313905
Pretty much this. Elodea, any Val, those aponogetons you get from bulbs at petco (always have good luck with them and always got them to grow in shit light), lidwiga repens, and many more I'm too tired to list. Here comes sleep

Take >>2313905 advice on bioload with a grain of salt. You'll still need adequate filtration and regular water changes, regardless of your level of planting.

Anubias (left) and Java fern (right) can be attached to driftwood or rocks with fishing line or a rubber band and don't require high light, CO2 or fancy substrate.
>>
>>2313925
Oh, that's a given. I definitely wasn't trying to say that it means you could just set it and go. However, this type of tank is possible. I have an unfiltered tank, and I only do bi-monthly water changes. My strategy is low-nutrient substrate (clay gravel) lowish bioload (about 20 minnows in 25 gallons) and a lot of floating plants. Nitrates pretty much cant rise in the presence of floaters.
>>
>>2313929

That's awesome, and I don't doubt that you can pull it off, but I'd also bet that it wasn't your first planted tank.

There are a lot of newbies in these threads and I think those of us who have been in the hobby for a while take basic knowledge like proper tank size and water changes for granted.
>>
>>2313934
if you're doing water changes in a planted tank you're still a newb.
>>
>>2313957
I would argue that only a newbie wouldn't. There are micronutrients that get utilized, they need to be replaced every now and then. Fresh water acts as a solvent, bringing the nutrients out of the substrate and making them available.
>>
>>2313973
>There are micronutrients that get utilized, they need to be replaced every now and then
all of them are found in plant and fish food.
and in your soil.
>Fresh water acts as a solvent,
old water is a better solvent because it becomes mildly acidic over time.

none of this matters, but the fact that you're not aware of the concept marks you as the newest of the new.
>>
>>2313973
also water changes aren't the only reason people put new water in a tank.

evaporation replacement will more than make up for any minerals lost.

not sure why newbs forget that. If there's any reason to change water it's because topping evaporation will cause a build up of salts over years. That's pretty easy to fix by changing water once every few years though.

>>2313891

>>
>>2313978
Old water does not act as a better solvent over time, and you are just flat wrong about the acidity in most cases.
I know from experience that water hardens in almost all cases, because it slowly gets saturated with a variety of metals (mostly calcium) over time. Dirted tanks can show a PH that goes down over time due to CO2 production, but this does not affect the dissolved solids that are already there. As these minerals build up, they take the place of more essential ones that plants need. You could add as much of them as you wanted, if there isn't any water free of other dissolved minerals to dissolve it, it will not be absorbed.
Adding fresh water (assuming your tap isn't extremely hard) lets the water redissolve minerals from the substrate, fish food, etc, wherever it comes from, but regardless of the source of the micronutrients, fresh water is needed to make them available. As they get used up, calcium takes its place. This process is called ion exchange, and is very well explained, if you want me to walk you through how you are wrong.
>>
>>2313993
Barely enough. Many people in the planted tank community will tell you that water changes are just 1 key in a good tank.
>>
>>2314003
>you are just flat wrong about the acidity in most cases.
>doesn't know that fish waste and plant fertilizers are both acidic

buildup of calcium can indeed become a problem... over a period of several years. As I said.

and that's the opposite of the reason you claimed water changes need to be done. You won't be walking me through anything, skippy. You're retarded.

and can thus be replaced by
-topping off evaporation
-feeding fish
-fertilizing plants
-adding trace minerals

or any combination of the above.
and you're a newb if you didn't know this and try it.
>>
>>2314023
Topping off doesn't add an adequate amount. Fish foods don't add nearly enough either unless you're severely over feeding and adding more ammonia than the plants are taking in. No one mentions though that it depends how planted your tank is.
>>
>>2314022
Ya
>>
>>2314027
>Topping off doesn't add an adequate amount. Fish foods don't add nearly enough either
then those aren't trace minerals you're talking about.

most people top more evaporation water on tropical tanks than you change.

Low tech all the way.
Fish waste has almost no notable effect on PH in any tank at the levels it is not going to kill the shit out of your fish.
I think you need to walk yourself into some books, go ahead and figure out how things actually work.
>>
>>2314030

>>2313978
The soil will accumulate an uneven ratio of nutrients if you don't change out the water.
Plants aren't going to use up all nutrients in even amounts, so some will be depleted while others build up.
The depletion could lead to deficiencies in the plants, which would allow algae to utilize the built up nutrients.
Changing the water and dosing helps even out the nutrient balance.
>>
>>2314037
>Do you know what a trace mineral is?
do you think the same trace minerals are found in all the water all over the world?

see, this is why your justifications are just laughable. We don't do water changes to replenish trace minerals because you won't find the same minerals in all water. Not even close.

more importantly, experienced aquarists use RO-DI water because tap water usually has unwanted minerals in it.

but you guys don't know this (very basic) stuff, and ultimately that's how you chase away anyone that does. You pull some bullshit out of your ass and defend it like your life depends on it.

then you attack anyone that disagrees with your 'expertise.' You're an idiot. This board would be much better without you and your stupidity. Sadly it seems nobody of quality wants to put up with your shit or tell you how it is.

not that you're smart enough to learn a fucking thing.

I guess we can ignore all the respected planted tank guys and the pros. It's whatever. Odd as they never mention RO-DI just the guys who keep delicate fish. Maybe you can chime in when you learn what minerals you can find in all main water in the USA. For now though trying to educate someone who refuses to accept when he's wrong (not all of its wrong) is pointless.

Notice how you qualify your response with "main."

now when I show you that there is no mineral common to all water in the US you'll just say "that's not main water, I said main water."

this is how retards avoid being confronted with their own stupidity. You move the goalposts so you can't be wrong.

there is no single mineral common to all tap water in the US. We both know it. In fact water companies regularly remove most minerals from water.

Mine has been setup for about 3 weeks now, and it got off to a rough start. I did a full fert dose the first week, then the next week I did another full dose. I didn't think about the fact that there is no way so few plants could have used up the whole dosage in a week. Needless to say, I had a lot of algae. My water sprite is looking a little rough around the edges, but overall, I think it will bounce back. My Anubias has some hair algae on it though and I'm not too happy about that.

5 or 6 years ago when I was still buying tanks petco or pet smart would occasionally do a $1/gallon deal and that was the tits. Try to wait for one of those or maybe check craigslist for a used tank.
>>
>all this autism about minerals

I always thought the point of water changes was to remove the literal shit that you're making your fish swim around in. I don't care how densely planted your tank is, it's still a closed system and you need to remove the fish shit from it.
>>
>>2314249
Fish poop from most fish is actually largely liquid. A portion of this, the portion that builds up to toxic levels, is ammonia. Through bacterial action ammonia converts into nitrate, which unless soaked up by plants (which they can do) starts to poison your fish. Some fish have bad, short-track digestive systems, like goldfish, and only take up like 15% of what they eat. Because of the slow buildup in most tanks that don't have the right level of plant absorption, you have to do regular water changes in the majority of tanks.
