how common is cat chin acne on a white and orange tabby cat? she's got a white chin if that matters. I found her in the wild when she was a kitten, I think she never learned how to properly clean herself from her mother. It isn't as bad as some of the photos that a google image search delivers, but I imagine it still brings her discomfort.

Pretty common. If you haven't already, switch your food bowl to a stainless steel type and wash it often. You can help your cat clean her chin by gently wiping it once a day with a warm wet washcloth.

At my clinic, when a cat has bad acne to the point where it's bloody/clearly uncomfortable for the cat, we use Neutrogena On-The-Spot (human) acne treatment 1x-2x per day until it resolves somewhat.

Can I ask some questions here?

I live with my gf and we recently got a new cat. 3 yr old maine coon sort of mix, clearly maine coon, but not full blood, so she is medium sized and not YUGE.

First question, she tends to poop not in the litter box sometimes. She knows how to use the litter box and has her own box separate from our other cat, who is a 5 yr old tabby, but she will go into where the other box is and poop right on the floor and sometimes pee. Other times she will poop outside of her own box. Also when she does poop in the litter box, she never covers it.
Any idea why? We keep the litter scooped and clean.

Second question, which may tie in to the first. The maine coon tries to bully our tabby. I guess this is just all part of adjusting to having a new home and having two cats, but it gets scary. I don't want our older cat to have to live in fear and the maine coon has her own food, but wants to eat the tabbys food which gives her bad diarhea

Any suggestions on keeping her out of the food or lessening the bullying?

Your new cat wants to be the ONLY cat in the household. The shit piles next to the other cat's box is common "scare tactic" to try to make your old cat gtfo.

Be glad it's only two cats having a turf war and not dozens of ferals. The literal shit really sucks.

I'm not that guy, but I'm not looking forward to my kittens growing up and interacting more with my current cats. The one pictured in >>2297800 hisses at them for intruding, and while he does love his pic related sister, with the sight of the two hanging around each other, snuggling together or licking each other, he also loves to attack her to prove his dominance because she won't defend herself very much unless he's trying to nab her precious biscuits.

On the subject of the kittens, pic related is terrified of them. She's fucking spastic, but surprisingly timid around new entities that aren't toys, bugs or mice.

>Have best cat ever
>Friendly but not too up your ass, smart, tolerant
>Acts more like a dog than a cat
>Let her outside one day
>She never comes back
>Several years later and never find another cat like her

>>2297114
That's weird, that breed is known for being very friendly and social. Maybe she means to strangers?

>>2297401
Assuming you get there soon you should be OK. If he's very active you may want to put him in a bathroom while you're out.

>>2297676
Cats don't always get along with other cats, and if they do they don't always play with each other. They could still be bored to tears. And 2 cats is 2x the work. If you want two cats that's fine but it won't be easier than having just one. I would recommend older cats, most cats will do just fine 10 hours alone.

>>2297809
Like what the other anon said, but having another litter box or two in different locations (different location is important otherwise shell Kep doing it) could help because she can feel like that's HER designated shitting area and not have to share it. If that doesn't help there are a plethora of other explanations and solutions but I'd bet another litter box will help especially since it's a new cat.

It's probably too late now but look into slow cat introduction. It's what you're supposed to do when bringing a new cat into the home. Whoever was adopting the cat out to you needs to be fucking shot because this is all common knowledge and they should have explained it to you.

Hey I have a question... is there any way to get the cat from peeing on everything the dog lays on?
She rarely has a problem with the dog aside from peeing on her beds.
She just did it a few minutes ago right in front of us and I immediately tossed her off the blanket and scared her out of the room (not in a harsh way, just picked her up and moved her and stomped my foot a foot away from her and she skeedaddled from the room).
But I was wondering if I needed to get a spray bottle for her and spritz her when I catch her in the act or if there's any topical sprays for the dog beds that could deter the cat from even going near the bed?

I've never had a cat do something like this before and I always thought that "cats pee on your stuff when they're pissed" was a myth so I'm pretty puzzled by the situation.

Pic related that's the culprit.
>>
>>2297965
This isn't a new living situation either, her and the dog have lived together for a few years now and she's still doing it.
>>
>>2297975
Have you tried yelling at it?
>>
>>2297984
Her actual owner yells at her to get away from the dog beds whenever she tries to get near them and it's worked for a while up until today.

We don't normally let the dog sleep in our room, her main bed is in the living room, could it just be because the smell is in a seperate room and the cat feels like she had to mark it? If that's it we won't let the cat in here after the dog sleeps in here again.
>>
>>2297988
That's my solution to everything idk
>>
>>2297806
Rewarding the cat for positive behavior

In contrast with punishing for bad behavior.
>>
>>2297965
I've heard that cats don't like the smell of citrus, so you can spray a bit of lemon juice or orange juice on your couch to keep a cat from scratching it. It might work for the dog bed too, as long as the dog doesn't hate the smell as well.
>>
>>2298058
The dog doesn't seem too bothered by smells as long as the smell isn't something like big spray or chemical smelling so she should be fine with a citrus-y bed.
Thanks though!! We have lemon juice in the fridge so I'll put some on the doggo bed tonight
>>
>>2298058
My cats hate the smell of mint, especially toothpaste.
>>
>>2297965
When cats urinate on things, it usually means they're insecure about their territory. Punishing her won't solve the issue if the issue is that she's insecure.
>>
>>2297809
typical number of litter boxes I've always seen is Number of cats, plus one, and for each box to be in a different area, preferably level if you have an upstairs and down stairs.

My cat used to do the same thing after he'd lost a lot of weight and got arthritis in his hips, it was almost like he just couldn't hold it in before getting to the box. If you get another box, or two, and show your cats where it is and it's still happening you may want to take your kitty to the vet, she may have an issue.

Hi /cat/

I'm not really a cat person and already own a dog.

But a cat recently followed me home and has been living around my house/yard.

Its winter and rainy/snowy and the cat is small-medium sized, friendly & sweet.

To cut right to the chase: Is it ok to keep a cat but essentially treat it like a pet rabbit (oversized cage to live in, take let it out to roam & play daily)

Cat is currently in a 3x3foot cage and seems happy & comfy

If I keep it Id like to keep it in this- see pic
>>
>>2299990
You are aware that cats grow?

Cats need very big space to move and jump around
>>
>>2299994
Thats why I am here asking. I figured the cat will grow. But what is the difference between a cat and a rabbit.

The cat seems much happier indoors and in a cage rather than being an outside stray.

It is getting food and water and affection.
>>
>>2300003

The cat has only been around for 24 hours. We're still trying to figure out if my GF is allergic, if it is healthy, and if it would get along with our small dog (they've interacted minimally...seem ambivalent to each other...common trend for our dog) and ultimately it comes to us figuring out if we want to own a cat.

If we could care for it like a social pet rabbit we'd be more likely to keep it
>>
>>2300022
About their first interaction: if either of them didnt try clawing/biting the other one or got visibly mad, then they will get along. "ambivalency" on a first meeting is pretty much stellar

Don't own a cat if you're going to keep it in a cage. Just don't. Either let it continue being feral or let it roam your entire house. If you want you can feed it while it is feral. He will come every day if you do so, and will likely stay close all day.
>>
>>2296784
That Tank looks a bit over stocked... any reason for this?
>>
>>2300025
Again. Its day one, so who know how this will end up. But thank you for the update regarding dog & cat interactions.

If it were summer time then we'd leave the cat outside. But we are concerned about the cold. We have a finished basement/man cave. Depending on the situation & health maybe we could let the cat roam the basement freely
>>
>>2300025
Sir you are a moron.
>>2300022
If you plan to eventually work to let it be a free house roaming cat then yes, this is a perfectly fine method of keeping a ferral animal in a quaratine situation. But you must allow it out for minimum of 2 hours daily. Also you must interact with it daily while trying to introduce any other animals or people at the same time. The last thing is allowing it to freely roam the house, i.e. no closed doors. Just keep an eye on it and let it just get used to the home. If you don't want it later on, try to rehome it first. Then try to find shelter only after that fails.

Question

I've got a cat that's semi-long hair, but he has no patience for being brushed, so he occasionally develops mats in his fur when a new coat comes in. Any suggestions on what I can do to help prevent it?

How many cats are you friends with, /an/? My house has four cats, my dad and stepmum's house has three, plus my stepbrother's girlfriend has another two cats, my grandmother also has two cats who were growing up for the early parts of their lives while I was living there, and a cat belonging to one of my neighbours hangs out outside my house every now and then and is on good terms with me. It's strange how easily I'm able to befriend the things, cats are usually solitary and introverted.

Which one is the most talkative cat breed? Or does it depend on each individual?
Just in case, by talkative I mean a cat does meows a lot.
>>

Please, dont mix dogs with cunts, thank you very much
>>
>>2301877
Of the cats I've had (quite a few, but all of them common breeds. No sphynx, russian fancy breeds, etc)) the ones that talk more are simple black cats. I've had or been around 4 different black cats (1 of them long hair, 3 short hair) and all of them talk so much more than any other cat I've seen.

Every morning when I get up I have a whole conversation with my cat. It's the qtest thing ever. And it's not annoying meowing, it's gentle, quiet talking much like a normal person would speak.

I don't know how to take it. I even feel like an idiot right now for thinking, does pigmentation actually affect it, was just coincidence or maybe there's something else going on that correlates but we don't know?

I've been a dog person for the most part of my life -not an anticat or anything, just lived with dogs- but I've been living with cats for a while now and there were a few days some time ago when one of the cats was very talkative and I loved it.
So I thought, well, if there's a chance that I could get a talkative one maybe I could adopt one in the future.

I've no idea why. Very likely unrelated to the actual pigmentation, and more to the "breed" they are.

Also know that cats don't talk to you until they are somewhat close to you. Stranger cats won't ever talk to you.
Encourage your cat to talk to you... by talking to it. Cats meow mostly for human communication. If you don't talk, it wont talk back.

Do you feel bad about taking strays to a shelter? Like what are the chances of them spending their entire lives there?

My mother brought home a stray and we cant keep him. He would need to be neutered and he has worms and fleas and we can't afford to raise a cat. We haven't been able to find a home for him so he's going to end up in a shelter. He's sweet and very interactive. He's loves attention and sitting in laps. He's still young, under a year I'm sure, but he's not very young like tiny cutie kitten young.

I just feel like I'd be sending him to his doom.
>>
>>2302661
What kind of shelter is it?

In the one I volunteer at (a privately owned SPCA), cats come and go all the time. Right now the cat that's spent the most time at the shelter has been there 6 months, and it's not normal and mostly because she's a "special" cat (she's a bitch). Any normal cat spends only around 1-2 months before they get adopted.

It all depends on the shelter and your area tho. Go to your shelter, meet the cats there, ask how long they've been there.
>>
>>2302668
There are a few near me. I was looking at their websites and non of them say anything about surrendering so I'll have to contact them directly.
>>
>>2302303
Whenever he starts getting rough with your hands stop interacting with him, get up, and walk away.

Also stop playing with him using your hands. Get some toys like a feather on a stick or an oven mitt if you really want to use your hands. That way he doesn't associate hands with rough play.

This is my new kitten friend Eva
Her bottom lip was ripped/burned off in the engine of a truck my dad had been working on. She apparently rode under the hood of the truck for something like 30 mins, which according to him doesn't end very well too often.
He couldn't keep her and I've been thinking about getting a kitten for a while anyways
She's super sweet and friendly. Always coming up and sleeping on my shoulder while I'm at the computer
This picture is from a few days ago
Her bottom lip is healing well, no signs of infection and it doesn't seem to bother her much

Something else that the cat does is to drool over me when I pet him. I pet him and yeah, he likes it, -they like it, there are two cats- they close their eyes and purr and then they drool over me, like drops of saliva falling.

Sometimes they also lick me and push themselves against me, like they demand me to pet them.

I'm thinking about getting a cat as I've been very lonely lately.

How do I make sure the cat will be an affectionate one? I used to have one that ran away for weeks at a time and got into fights with other cats and never want ed attention from anyone, when I was little.I meet other cats in the wild that are very nice and want to get pets.I want one like that.

How messy are they? Is cleaning litter a big deal?

Is it expensive to get them food with real meat in it? I don't want my cat eating shitty bone meal all the time.

dog person who wants a cat. i have some questions.

if i get two kittens will they get littermate syndrome?

what kind of toys should i buy for the kitten? theres a lot of cat toys in the store, which ones are the best?

how to socialize kitten so it's friendly and cuddly as an adult?
>>
>>2304349
You don't have to get them toys
Just give them boxes, small towels, socks
anything they can toss around and pounce on
mine likes plastic bags
She can toss it and it makes lots of noise
>>
>>2304322
Cats vary in size. Some never end up weighing more than 6 pounds, others are 20+ as healthy adults. If you can barely feel his ribs without them poking out or the skin hugging them, he's an okay weight.

>>2304349
>if i get two kittens will they get littermate syndrome?
I've never heard of this being an issue with cats. From the ones I've seen at the shelter, they're much friendlier with each other than two randos, but they aren't any less affectionate toward people or other animals.
If you have two littermates that have been together a long time and you separate them, they seem to get kind of depressed. We had some 8 month old kitten sisters once and someone only wanted the one. Normally they were both very active and quiet, but the one they left behind cried for two days almost nonstop and was more shy and fearful after that.

>what kind of toys should i buy for the kitten? theres a lot of cat toys in the store, which ones are the best?
I have a cat wand with the interchangeable chain-type additions to the end so that I can swap them out whenever they tear up the one toy. It doesn't even need to be an actual toy. Tissue paper or grass tied to the end works just as well.
Laser pointer is good for some cats, but I always follow it up with the wand so they can play with something they can actually feel.
Scratching post is a must. You can make your own out of some wood scraps and sisal rope. The corrugated cardboard scratcher refills also work just fine laid on the ground plain.

>how to socialize kitten so it's friendly and cuddly as an adult?
Cats are pretty hit and miss with this in general. Good grooming practices seem to help, and just being affectionate in general. Training with treats would also probably help. Don't force it to be near you, though. If the cat wants to walk away, just let it.
>>
>>2296551
mine is the same. She licks it off because she's allergic to fleas so all it takes is one bite to set her off. I'm getting a new front door and flee treating the house. She's on a double flee treatment until then.
>>
>>2304349
Never heard of litter mate syndrome with cats. If you want two cats, however, get a bonded pair. Cats are very hit and miss with becoming friends with each other. My two cats still hate each other after 3 years.

The only toy I recommend is a wand toy like Da Bird. Besides that, cats will play with just about anything. One of mine loves bottle caps, for example. Lots of cats love crumbled up paper balls and old socks.

There is no way to guarantee a kitten's personality once they are done growing. The whole "the only way to guarantee a temperament is to get an adult animal" is even more true of cats than dogs. You could have the cuddliest kitten ever, and despite everything you do, it could still become an aloof asshole as an adult.

If you want to guarantee a cuddly cat, get a 3 year old or older. Cats aren't dogs and can and often do live late into their teens. Cats living into their early 20s are not unheard of.

advice please
my roommate is moving out at the end of february and taking her cat with her.
my cat was a kitten (about 8 or 9 months) when she and her cat moved in with us, so my cat has become quite close with this other cat.
i want to get another cat as a companion for my cat so she's not lonely.
my question is do i get a kitten or a full grown cat? i want what is best for my cat. my options are to adopt a kitten from a shelter, or adopt a co-worker's 5 year old female cat. apparently it's a good cat but they just had a baby and that means no more cat for some reason.
mine is a bit territorial and fought with the other cat a fair bit when he moved in, so i'm worried that would happen again with a full grown cat. we also babysat another cat for a few months last year and there were territory issues there as well.
i'm thinking she might feel more comfortable and maybe even motherly with a kitten, and then the kitten can learn the ways of the home from her.

pic related. mine is on the left and my roommate's is on the right.

When I was looking into it everything I read said that the best chance of the cats getting along is if the new one is of the opposite gender and "opposite age," so they're less likely to feel threatened by one another.

So in your case that would be a young male kitten.

I have a question maybe someone here can help with. I live with my brother but he resently got engaged and I'm moving out in a couple months. We have 2 cats, one each, and they are best buds.
This is a nice big house and the cats are ok, but I'd miss them and I'm the one that actually cares for them. I don't know if I should take them to a small apartment or if I should leave them here.

Can anybody give me advice on curbing my cat's aggressive behaviors around food?

He's nagging/whining/biting hours before his feeding time. He doesn't care about a squirt bottle. Putting him outside works but, in a house of four he's often back inside within 10 minutes, and if I don't keep him out there long enough he doesn't care about it. Feeding him more often made the problem even worse. I feed him twice daily, at the same times each day.

Any tips?

My little dude had worms a few weeks ago and got treated for them, but he's still regurgitating his food at night. Is this normal or should I get him checked out again?
>>

He has always been like this.

He's 8.
>>
>>2305477
Don't feed him at the same time every day. Vary it. Same amount of food, but give it randomly during the day.

At first, ease into it. Start by varying his feeding time by 10 mins, then 20, 30, an hour, 2 hours, etc. for like a month.

This mimics natural behaviour more closely (what animal eats at set times in the wild?), and mainly will prevent him from acting in any way out of expecting food.
And more than aggresive behaviour, this could also potentially cause health issues with his stomach because his body also expects food at a set time, thus prepares for it by releasing digestive juices before any food is in, which degrades the stomach and potentially the esophagus.

Hey guys I have a kitten who is about 4 months old now who just recently started vomiting after eating her wet food. It's only happened twice now, yesterday and the day before but I figured this was the best place to come for advice. I free feed her dry food throughout the day and she does fine with that, and after she vomits she's completely fine, acting like her crazy kitten self. I feed her fancy feast kittens and she just finished getting all her vaccines if either of those play a role.

My brother has a big fat fluff thats has been pissing on stuff. At first it used to be a corner in his bedroom, but now its been using the couch. It hasn't done this very often, but its enough that hes considering getting rid of the cat now. The cat is male, its fixed, and the litter box is typically clean during these incidents, so he doesnt think its because its too unsanitary for the cat.
I dont want his cat to be sent away.

I currently don't have a cat, but really wanted to adopt a senior from the shelter.

My current landlord though doesn't allow pets. He doesn't come to the rental unannounced however, and we literally pay 1,250$ a month for a two bedroom. We are very clean. I don't see why a cat would matter or cause a bunch of damage...have any of you anons gotten a cat when it wasn't allowed by the landlord?
>>
>>2309021
I worked for an apartment complex that didn't allow pets.

The contract said, though, that if someone had a doctor approved 'assistance animal' like for PTSD, seizures, etc. we would have to allow it. If by chance you think you have a condition that you can convince your doctor to write up a note for, I say go for it, but most landlords/doctors see through the bullshit so don't go this route lightly. This also doesn't apply everywhere.

At the place I worked on, i believe one family was approved to have an indoor cat, but then under cover of being able to blame it on that cat, 2 or 3 other ladies each suddenly had cats. The other tenants ended up formally complaining about cats everywhere and got them dealt with.

Basically, just be careful of your neighbors and don't let it roam around if you get a cat, you can probably get away with it but be prepared to part with it if someone finds out. Some people can be incredibly fast to rat you out. That's just my experience though.
>>
>>2309028
Thanks for the advice anon. We have one neighbor so if we get a cat I'll sure she doesn't become aware of it.
It would be an indoor cat.

I can always say, I suppose, if the landlord would find out about the cats that they are my parents and I'm watching them. We are temporarily renting. Hopefully in the next 1-2 years we will save enough for a down payment on a house.
>>
>>2309028
It doesn't matter if your landlord "sees through the bullshit" if you have a valid doctor's note.

Cats like to rub on everything. It's cute, but the oils build up and leave dark streaks along wherever they pass most often.
Most people don't actually clean their walls, you're lucky if they ever vacuum. By the time they move out, that stuff is nearly impossible to get off.
Of course, you get the same problem with humans and the area around doorknobs and lightswitches. Same buildup happens there. Luckily, new plates are pretty cheap and the area is small enough to clean easily.
>>
>>2308981
Nah, that's bullshit. I just adopted an outdoor kitty that had a uti. He's locked up in the bathroom and a happy camper (given enough attention, anyway). Hey guys, I was wondering if you had any tips on this situation. I adopted an older cat as a favor to a friend who's family member couldn't take care of her anymore, and she finally made it to my house on Sunday night after a trip across the country. She was really scared the night she came in but she did the cat head-butt thing and let me pet her some and then I just let her do her own thing and explore the place.

It's been almost three days now and I haven't see her at all since the night she first arrived. She's been nibbling at her food but she hasn't used the litterbox. I'm starting to worry. She is not my first cat and I know they need a lot of time to adjust (she's been through a LOT over the past few weeks), but I would just like to know if she's not sick or stuck somewhere.

I got some live cat grass and catnip this morning to try to lure her out but still nothing. She's 14 years old so I'm worried she's not adjusting well.
>>
>>2309486
If you loved her so much then why did you let her leave the house?
>>
>>2309156
I had an outdoor cat that did the same shit, but she was a weirdo so I'm not sure it's normal behavior.
>>
>>2306432

>>
>>2304321
Older ones from shelters are generally very affectionate and grateful you've gotten them out of there. Try to get to know the cat at the shelter before you adopt them.

Kittens are hit or miss and can totally grow up to have shitbag personalities. An old cat is not gonna change.

Cats aren't really that messy in my experience. Establish a scratching post or tree early on to ensure your furniture survives (probably). Cleaning out litterboxes is easy as, check once a day change out the litter once ever courple weeks depending on how hard your cat is shitting.

Canned food is sort of expensive but it's not out of my budget as a college student working part time, but I also live really cheaply. The biggest expenses are vet visits and flea medicine.

Also cats are great and will cure loneliness in a fucking second, but prepare to become a NEET if you're at risk. Dogs will force you to be more social.

Vet said it can happen with senior cats if they bite on anything hard and to keep watching him to see if he has pain eating. He seems to be eating fine but I feel really bad about him missing all but one of his top teeth. His side and canine teeth are just fine but this is one of those scary reminders that he's getting old and won't be around forever.

While back I took in a stray who grew to love me
He was very squinty etc
Brought him to the vet
Treated his eyes for something ( forgetting the name )
His eyes cleared up a good bit but he had a corneal ulcer ( this also cleared up)
And for a while he was better
More recently he has developed entropions in both lower kids and while he doesn't seem to be in pain I feel terrible for him and want to get this fixed

Anyone have experience with this ?
Thinking a surgery may have to be done to fix it

Fuck I feel like a shitty owner since I haven't gotten it done yet but I don't have thousands of dollars to throw at the vet to make it go away

Cats aren't supposed to be fed at precise hours.

It should always had a full bowl, and it will come 20 times a day pick one or two bites out of it.

It's the natural cats eating pattern to eat like that in nature.

If you cat was fed at precise hours before, it might take some times before he understands that he's no longer being fucked and that he can now eat like he sees fit.

During a week or so he's gonna stuff his face like a retard and vomit because he'll still be in the old "EAT WHEN YOU CAN CAUSE THE HOOMAN DOESNT GUARANTEE A DECENT SUPPLY". Once he understands he'll have food nonstop, he'll go back to it's original way and be a healthier, happier cat.

I really need help.

Every night, my 10 month old cat taps or scratches on the door and meows. This behavior persists after being flung/thrown away from the door, sprayed with ice water, and screamed at. She does this for hours every night, and if she is locked out of the room she does it to the other side of the door. Whenever she does is it I get out of bed to stop her, which is every 30 seconds to 2 minutes for about 3-5 hours a night. I have to sleep with the lights on so that I can stop her quicker. This is tearing my life apart and I lose about 2 hours of sleep to this every school night. If she doesn't stop I will have to kill her.

What can I do to stop this behavior? I tried nailing a heavy blanket to the wall but that just muffles the sound and I have to pry the nails out whenever I exit the room. As I type this I have just given up after 3 hours and gone to sleep in the bathroom. My brother still has to deal with the garbled meowing and tapping.

Lads, there's a cat outside my friend's apartment who doesn't seem to belong to anyone. I only say this because it's freezing cold outside and it keeps trying to get into people's apartments, and there isn't a collar on it or food out or anything.

I've never owned a pet before but I'm starting to feel a lot of compassion towards this guy and I might take him in. What do I need to know about raising my first cat and how I should cat-proof my apartment?
