Well Pagliacci is actually a specific character from an opera of the same name.

Pierrot is an archetype, or stock character for pantomime/clown stuff. A common use of the pierrot chracter is that of a man who's wife leaves him for naother, usually represented by the harlequin.
This is similar to the plot of the play withing the opera of Pagliacci, so that's probably why they look so similar.
