alright so each point is a simulated photon that comes off a light source and bounces around and hits the camera. that's just one pixel. as you can imagine, it takes a lot to fill an image, and it isn't going to be up to the number of pixels in the final image since they're emitted more or less randomly, and they can overlap, and some areas need to be sampled multiple times for different effects like the diffuse surface and glossy reflections and subsurface scattering and translucency. this can take some time. there are renderers that don't use this method and approximate most things, and sometimes use pre-baked textures made using a raytracing method (photon system from earlier) such as an ambient occlusion texture that controls how bright ambient light levels are on the surface so that corners are darker, but for some reason people don't bother with those despite looking as good or better than the level of quality some people put out, or rather shit out, with the native daz renderer.

it's not like there aren't faster options that can look good such as exporting to blender and using internal with enough bells and whistles turned on, and it's not like they can't just render a little longer or use a good denoiser in photoshop. the grainy result is entirely their own fault, be it through inaction or ignorance. besides, they don't even need to be 4k, i don't think anyone would notice if they ran a 2k or so render through waifu2x, which you can do if you download the caffe version to bypass the size limit on the website versions.
