I do this stuff because I enjoy making shit, not because I have any pretentions of making art or money. So what, my day job is making shitty Pay2Win casino games for the Google Play store. I feel guilty about it, but it's a job and I get to make stuff. Plus my boss is a cool guy who lets me watch Youtube all day while I work. But if I ever had to go back to working at 7-Eleven for eight hours a day never being able to get full time because they kept shuffling my hours I probably would've ended up killing myself or going on welfare. There are people like me who just enjoy the process, but we're very few and far inbetween. Most people just want an escape from the pressure because modern life's too stressful, and being an "artist" means you supposedly do shit how you want and when you want. They don't realize the people doing webcomics or whatever have actual dayjobs or somebody they live with that pays the bills.

Oh, I get it. Look, I'm a software engineer and I only recently started drawing, and even though I am very shit at it, it is to me an utterly new experience. Normally I dig through 50 layers of other, less competent peoples code to devise workarounds for their bugs and with drawing, I can create something from utter scratch. No need to worry about the fuckups of other people, no need to worry about lack of documentation (or worse: documentation that is plain wrong), no need to try to divine what some high asshole meant his code to do writing it at 3 in the morning for people who couldn't find their ass even if their head wasn't screwed on backwards. Just me and the pen and a couple hours later there's something nice. Even if it's not good, it is at least a thing I made.

But I imagine as a professional illustrator, operating in a large group, you end up with the same problems again, constantly limited by other peoples fuckups.

I'm a texture artist. It can be pretty dull and time consuming. Do you know how much goes into one of those stupid fucking slots games? Half the fucking filesize you download to your phone is the fucking textures. Close to 2,000 .tga and .png files in the fucking things, and I have to draw or edit together most of them. Thanks to our coder literally just copying and pasting shit whenever since he can since they're all essentially the same games and it's Unity or Construct I'm usually the one with the biggest workload if we're going full 2D.

My biggest problem with R&M is the "freestyle" line reading. It's like you picked a random person on the street verbally said a line to them and asked them to repeat it. How one of my less than 1 MB files doubles or triples in size once it's in the engine I don't know. You have two approaches to images:

Method one: compressed files (png, jpg, ...). Here your engine has to read, decompress them in the memory and then use them. RPGmaker and Ren'py do this. It's bad for performance, but who cares when it's a VN or 2D pixelgame.

Method two: store them uncompressed. Then the engine just has to read them to the memory and use them. This is what Unity and engines like monogame do.
