This is the pre-anime original cover to Unicorn, Yas's art is still quite stylized, but fairly "normal" compared to typical modern anime styles.

A lot of western stuff from the 70s and 80s had a vague anime feel to it because they were often done by Japanese studios. Go a little bit further in the Japanese direction and you have the original Gundam. It's not as big of a stretch compared to the next generation of stuff like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon.

Japan has a very strong and well established voice acting industry, people make long and profitable careers out of it, have a lot of fan recognition (to the point of several shows banking on VA popularity). That creates a scenario where there are lots of people wanting to work in that field, which in turn means there are more talented people working with voice acting. Not because Japanese are magically better at voice acting, but simply because there's more voice actors period.

Meanwhile in the US voice acting is still often seen as third rate acting, any big animation movie gets a lot of celebrity voices and hollywood live action stars over professional voice actors, and the guys who work only with voice acting don't enjoy much recognition. A lot of people only resort to Voice Acting by result of circunstances, it's not the career most people aimed for. So there's a smaller pool of VAs avaliable, which also mean a smaller pool of actual talent. And I am talking about VAs acting on western productions. When we throw foreign products dubbing into the mix, that pool shrinks even further. Just see how most anime and japanese games either draws from a very small poll of good VAs, or have shitty voice acting.

This is a problem with the size of the industry itself, but also with how the profession is seen by the public at large and by the people making decisions on the corporations that produce content, and honestly I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I was more curious about that than actual Day 4 since Jewcat talked about it, but it's not on this update.
