I loved that too, reminds me of Dezaki's postcard memories but I've never seen them done in this style before. Episode 9 has definitely been my favourite yet, expressionistic as hell. Loved the way the guy who did storyboards would isolate a lot of the events on screen, like with your pic, or when the floor takes up 60% of the screen, or that cut where they just white out the edges kinda like Only Yesterday except more extreme.
