This show disappointed me because both Manaka Hikari had amazing character development in the first half, and then they decide to just fucking reset and make the best girl an emotionless shell. I will never understand why Okada thought it was good writing to make the most compelling part of the story null and void for half of the show.

Nothing else apart from that and some day after tomorrow prophecy was driving the plot, and even that was neutered because they said it would happen in like 150 years.

Oh yeah, 1-2 episodes of new character development was totally worth putting a whole character on hold for half a season. Yeah, you're right, it was wrong of me to think that making a major character irrelevant to the plot was a bad idea, whoops.

And for the clarification, being motivation for the plot and being relevant is completely different. Had she stayed in the sea the whole time until the climax, the whole story would have been almost exactly the same.

To be fair, they were middle schoolers. Middle schoolers actually think like that. And it would've been refreshing if they had actually gotten over that kind of melodrama in the middle of the show when it looked like it would happen, instead of using a catastrophe to extend it artificially.
