I disagree. I think it hit him, but it was partially blocked by the jade piece.
Plus, Nanashi is exhausted from fighting through everyone else and getting a piece of wood stuck in his arm after falling like 20 feet.
After all, where else would that blood be coming from in the final horseback scenes.
I'm not saying he's dead/dying, but he got pretty messed up.

The ending has a more optimistic tone to it. I don't think he died.

The blood came from the wound in his arm, him dying makes little to no sense when you realize he had one serious but non-fatal wound on his arm and one glancing wound on the side of his abs. It just made way more sense that he was tired as fuck from running a marathon than having one hell of a sword-fight. It just tried to be dramatic for drama's sake and failed when you realize the only major wound is on his arm.

I don't think any of the film's characters explicitly state where he was from. Could be anything from a Dutch merc or a mixed race from the silk road. Maybe Nanashi was from Siberia or something.

Still though, I was impressed with the even-handed portrayal of the Ming and the Japanese. I'd hope for an Imjin War anime without any nationalist bias getting shoehorned into the thing though I doubt it's possible with how touchy East Asian relations are now.

The ending was purposely left ambiguous, but a lot of things implied he died. There'd be little purpose to show him bleed that much and the last scene was a close-up of the kid's crying face saying it's all gonna be alright, as if the kid himself doesn't believe it. I had the feeling the director wanted to kill Nanashi but didn't quite have the balls to do it.
But as I said, it's left for interpretation, so believe what you want.
