Did he check the schedule to kill his mother right before Satoru got home? He cut it pretty close since he killed her as soon as she got in the house and Satoru arrived like minutes (?) later unless he just hung out there. Would it had even made a difference? Seems like he left a pointless trail if my understanding's correct. The criminal seems pretty stupid since he didn't even know if she had said anything, which could've further incriminated him. Trying to kill Airi makes the whole thing and he only gets by due to how incompetent the police seem to be.

They've been, almost everything from the last two episodes was dumb with the characters fighting over who does the most retarded thing. It didn't help that the direction/animation quality dropped drastically (though last episode was way better than 5) after he went back to the present.
