They're popular with fan artists, but that's not really the people driving this franchise. From that start, P&D was designed to appeal to really young boys, with badass dragons and shit. Which is why any spin-off you see focuses on those dragons and completely ignores all the cute girls that made the game popular here.

It started out as a game about collecting dragons, with gods as this extremely rare and powerful type of monster that you'd have to spend money to get. Then the focus kinda shifted, since obviously they'll focus on whatever makes them money.

I would say that they're generally popular with the fanbase too, considering that they're pretty much some of the most useful units and are cute too to beat. Sakuya especially is popular with all the fucking polls she wins for UEvos. If they don't ban her, I can see them trying to give her another.

In terms of waifufaggotry, Sakuya might lose out, but the thing is that a lot of Sakuyafags aren't waifufags, a lot of Sakuyafags are attached to her because she's more or less consistently been top tier since her introduction and she's much easier to get started on than a lot of top tiers, while still having a high skill ceiling and late game options.
