I dunno if it's because the series got more popular than he expected or the publisher being dicks or what, but it really feels unnatural and takes away from the story. At this point I'd prefer an actual dense harem protagonist or the protagonist getting castrated.

Their relationship in the VN isn't quite as ridiculous, with them having their first kiss shortly after starting to date (which in turn happens earlier in the story.) The part of her non-After Story route where their relationship actually progresses got lost in the necessary changes that had to be made to cram every route that didn't require Tomoya hooking up with someone else into the series.

Them not having sex until well after marriage is canon in the VN, too, though.

Vast majority of male leads fits into one of two categories: betas and super betas. Super betas (most of harem leads) do not seem to even have any kind of desire for relationship. They are surrounded by beautiful, nice and fun girls and yet, they don't even consider trying to get one. Actually what happens is the opposite - any contact with them results in a panic attack.
Betas might have some basic relationship awareness, but even if they have a crush, it looks like hearing "ski desk" is the upper bound of their imagination.

And that's where the problem is; shitty harems aside, even if there is an obvious pairing in anime, becoming a couple is more or less a local equivalent of a Steam achievement. None of the awkwardness is gone, they don't kiss, they don't make out, they don't behave like a fucking couple at all. We get a metric fuckton of in-your-face fapservice consisting of most impossible accidents, falling into boobs, pantyshots, naked girls roaming everywhere, but when we have a couple that has no reasons to not fuck like rabbits, we get nothing. As long there is no emotional involvement, no chemistry and no mutual desire, even the lewdest shit is okay. Any traces of actual romance appear - anything more than blushing and awkwardness is prohibited.

Girl going HENTAI SUKEBE ECCHI after having her boobs accidentally groped is an amazing, high-quality, must-have fanservice, not to mention it's an advanced humor for mature people.
