I'm within 15 episodes of finishing out a marathon of Dragonball and I'd like /a/'s advice on whether I should watch the original DBZ or Kai for Saiyan through Cell saga.
I'll be watching he dub.
I don't even know how to respond. I've seen this talk a thousand times and it's always the same discussion.
So if you really want to watch it in english, I'd say watch Kai, even though I'm a Z fan myself, because Kai Freeza sounds much much better than the original Z one.
Just read the fucking manga.
You've already decided you're gonna watch the show with Funimation's fanfiction dialogue, and while DB's dub is lousy, DBZ's dub is 4kids-level terribad.
"I can't stand Japanese Goku's voice" is code for "I switched to the Japanese track for 5 seconds and it didn't agree with my rose-colored Toonami memories of 'fuck yeah dee bee zee explosions rock the dragon'"
>fuck yeah dee bee zee explosions rock the dragon
I want to get into Dragonball too. Original seems pretty obvious (watch the anime, skip to the manga when the production values get horrible, skip back when there's a well-directed episodes etc) but with Z I have NO IDEA what to do
-Kai improved the pacing in the canon stuff hugely
-BUT THEY REMOVED THE FILLER ARCS THAT EVERYONE SAYS ARE FUN
-The original Z anime has some nice direction and moments of very good character art, backgrounds and animation https://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/16889/animated-dragon_ball_series-dragon_ball_z-effects-
Was the guy who said "Kai looks better' actually correct? Cuz I recall seeing some side-by-side comparisons and it looked like they redrew the backgrounds to make them ugly, fucked up the colors and assorted other stuff.
Look at my webms above... does Kai EVER manage to look as good as that or do they ruin the style?
but seriously >>137296146
I want some screenshot comparisons of some more stand-out scenes like the ones I linked, the more dramatic stuff with thoughtful color use and detailed backgrounds and whatnot. cuz the comparisons I saw made Kai look like total shit.
a Kaifag should convince me to watch Kai by posting a webm of a visually-cool scene like I did for the 80s stuff here >>137296146 to convince me Kai can actually look that good even if they removed the blood
Kai is like 95% cut up film from Z, but with better color definition than any previous release. It looks great but also has a bit of noise reduction to it that holds it back slightly. However, there's a string of episodes during the Captain Ginyu battle and early Freeza battle that were shot on 35mm and look absolutely gorgeous -- pic related.
The other 5% is digitally redrawn stuff for whatever reason -- either the film was too damaged or they had to re-do flashy stuff because it was TOO flashy. The digitally redrawn stuff looks super jarring and out of place.
It also depends what you compare it to. Compared to the Dragon Box, it's about tied in my opinion -- it's in 1080p, but also suffers from the noise reduction I mentioned earlier. Compared to the pisspoor American DVDs/BDs? Not even close, Kai blows those away.
Kai is thecnically better with the sound quality and some visuals.
Z is better with the fun filler arcs (at least I think so), music, performances ( >>137294132 ), and
no censorship. So I'd watch Z. If you want no filler just read the manga, why watch Kai? Kai is only good for the english dub people, 'cause the original dub is atrocious.
I'll try to find some side-to-side pics.
>cuz the comparisons I saw made Kai look like total shit.
I also think Kai looks like shit most of the times. Everything in it kinda looks like it's made of candy I dunno.
Yeah I stand by what I said. Kai is too colorful for me.
That said, I can't really recommend Kai to someone new to the franchise. It's got a couple of quirks besides visual ups and downs that really make me not totally on-board
The non-visual downsides of Kai are
-totally skips pre-Raditz
-the Japanese performances are hit-or-miss the second time around
-the editing gets a bit lazy/choppy in the Artificial Humans/Cell arc
-Majin Boo arc was done after the fact, with even lazier editing (and Toei's film transfer looks like ass)
The best thing for DB fans that Kai brought to the table was that Funi got their shit together and made a competent dub. Otherwise I wouldn't tell anyone to bother with Kai at all.
Z, for all its flaws, is a much more consistent and entertaining anime. Kai is more of a curiosity.
read the manga
That's not Kai. That's
>Original Funi DVD
>Funi "ultimate uncut" DVD
What you're calling "too colorful" is the original colors of the (now slightly aged) film. The other are generational copies with detail loss and Funi "remastering" to crush dark detail and make them look even worse.
>I also think Kai looks like shit most of the times. Everything in it kinda looks like it's made of candy I dunno.
yeah see LIKE RIGHT HERE >>137296527
What the fuck did they do to the colors, they look SO BLAND AND SHITTY NOW
WHY COULDN'T SOMEONE MAKE A FAN-MADE KAI WITH THE ORIGINAL FOOTAGE AND THE FILLER ARCS REMOVED. JUST THE REDUNDANT PACING FIXED.
fuck that would be perfect
Yeah Kai looks like they completely fucked up the art direction.
You know what? I'll just switch back and forth between manga and anime whenever the boring talky bullshit get too slow. It's kind of a weird way to experience a series, but it seems much better than Kai's ugly modernized shit.
That's one of the digitally redrawn scenes.
Pic related is a side-by-side of the Dragon Box (left) and Kai(right). The scenes from the original film look nothing like the digitally redrawn ones.
us all I need to know
I fucking love the colors on the left and hate the ones on the right. the blood is an added bonus.
>huurr durr im being a retarded faggot on purpose and think I'm killing it
Pathetic. Get your shit together you NEET loser, your life can't possibly be that sad.
If it is, then by all means give up, like you gave up everything else so far. Sendo kudos to mom and das, they sure are proud of their boy.
>It's kind of a weird way to experience a series
Making your personal frankenstein of your prefered different versions of the same material is the best way to experience it. Only way I listen to musical recordings. Les Mis, for instance, has like a hundred recordings so I just edited my favorites together.
I like the original better here.
Still I think the most important part is the voice acting. In english it's better in Kai, while in japanese the original Z is superior.
If you watch the Dragon Box (the one on the right), you get blood and the real colors of the film.
Yeah urghhh I'm never watching Kai. I love the "80s anime at its best" color schene of the old sow, in here they just made everyone's skin tones blanad and samey and made the colors pop out a lot less.
As I said, if stuff gets too slow I'll just skip to the manga then watch the anime when there's actual punching and kicking and kamehamehaing going on. Bad visuals bother me more than bad pacing; it's why I could watch Soul Eater.
what really pisses meoff is that they gave both of them the same skin tone
PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT SKIN TONES EVEN IF THEY'RE THE SAME RACE
NOT EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME, MODERN TOEI. GOD DAMMIT
To be honest, even as a huge DBfag so I may be biased, I never found the show to drag as much as it's exaggerated to be. The only part of the show I find tedious to watch is the independent filler arcs -- most notably the Garlic Jr. episodes.
>I never found the show to drag as much as it's exaggerated to be.
This so much. Rewatched the show some time ago and it's really not that slow.
>the Garlic Jr. episodes
I even like those,
The one that is cropped is the Funimation orange-box "Remastered" sets, which unfortunately is what EVERY streaming version and -nearly- every full DBZ torrent is based on. The "season set" BDs are cropped as well.
Not only are Funi's DVDs/BDs cropped, the saturation & contrast are blown the fuck out in an effort to make the show look "modern" and it ends up looking like ass.
Pic related is a Blu-ray released in 2014. It looks even more horrific in motion.
wait fuck I didn't mean to quote you >>137297296
but yeah, asking everyone else the same question
>What's the best-seeded, best-quality torrent of the 80s DBZ with Japanese voices?
Best quality will be the ISOs of the Funimation release -- they may not be well seeded on nyaa, but they are out there on
usenet and ADC
Best seeded is probably the DBNL encode of the Dragon Box, but you will take a hit in quality.
Best balance would be the Utsukushii-Raws version, but it's unfinished -- only up to 171
I love the filler episodes, without them the series feels so empty. Hell, I mean like to watch the movies just for the funny interactions.
And, the absolutely best quality will be the R2 Dragon Box ISOs, but there is no release of that with subs. You would need to do some legwork to extract the DVDs & sync some subs and add your own.
Funi's Namek episodes for some reason look the worst
honestly I don't want shit seeds and i don't want to dig deep for sekrit klubs
I was just curious if someone could link a torrent or a direct magnet link for the 80s DBZ
the best one I could find is fucking 50 mb per episode
Wasn't that 10 years of DB anniversary movie "The Path to Ultimate Strength" really, really well animated? I think that was GT-generation https://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/18384/animated-background_animation-debris-dragon_ball-d
I don't care if "the writing is bad", serious Toriyama is always dumb and only worth watching for the over-the-top badassitude and occasional good direction that amplifies said badassitude.
The first 5 episodes, the last 5 episodes, and the special are actually pretty good, and the ending is excellent. The rest feels like Toei throwing a bunch of DB-ish plot elements at a dartboard and seeing what sticks.
The OP and EDs are great though.
His VA is just shit. Toei could find actually talented ones.
https://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/19451/animated-artist_unknown-background_animation-beams does anyone know who animated this shit? it looks better than anything I've seen in Super but no one can find the animator
A friend dropped it purely because of the GT outfit
Holy shit! I knew it wasn't the tools that defined the quality of the work, but this is new to me. How can you make such elaborate fight scenes in a mix of Goanimate and Flash, goon sire? Please provide a tutorial, if you may.
>A friend dropped it purely because of the GT outfit
I forgot to continue and say that I linked him Hisashi Mori's scene form it and he went "HOLY SHIT" and decided to watch it anyway
>A friend dropped it purely because of the GT outfit
>Goku voiced by a man
>Freeza voiced by a woman
The dub got it all backwards.
I'm fine with the more recent dubs but the DRAGON DRAGON ROCK THE DRAGON bullshit was heinous
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XebyKpo6A9s this scene: really cheesy and silly but very fun to watch thanks to the director making it work very well atmospherically with good cinematography and pacing. makes you feel like you're watching a simple but fun Japanese cartoon for young boys
Murrikan music version = ruined
Ummmm...you know that Dragon Dragon Rock The Dragon isn't made by Bruce Falconer, right?
That Freeza voice was super fitting for his final/fourth form though.
Z is fucking terrible with its pacing and filler, but if you made it through the first anime you probably would be fine with it. Kai has much much better English voice acting and script. When Funimation did Z they had no money or experience, they are much better now. Kai also takes out a lot of the shit that Z added to the story, which is a big plus for me. Only watch Z if you really like filler and radical music.
If you want something actually good you could always read the manga.
definitely watch kai
>better color and picture quality
> better voice actors for frieza, bulma, kid gohan, the ginyu force, etc...
>actors that weren't replaced did a much better job this time around
you could watch kai all the way through the Buu saga, but for some reason Funimation never dubbed it.
