My eyes welled welled up from emotion. It was also pretty darn goose bump inducing when you considered the implications.
One if the greatest scenes in anime history, it told so much with so little.

I didn't have any reaction. I was surprised to see it was considered such an emotional scene by some.

I'm amazed that people rate this so highly. I didn't feel any emotion throughout this anime, especially at the end.

I watched the show because of this scene, I knew it was coming, and I still teared up when it came

They only did save the human race from extinction. People knew they were going to eventually return, so it's not that far fetched to believe that this would be something that many generations would continue to hold onto. Every single kid would learn about this when taught about history.

Maybe if it was over hundreds of thousands or even millions of years. But as long as the human race is still intact, it really isn't farfetched to imagine them paying homage to what would basically be like Christ returning to earth in terms of magnitude.

Just look at the epic of gilgamesh, why does anybody give a shit about some story 5 thousand years ago? But people do and it isn't 'forgotten.' Now imagine if the epic of Gilgamesh was about him combating aliens to save the human race from extinction. A few thousand years wouldn't make people suddenly 'forget' when people haven't forgotten the story of some old king.

Your general idea of 'everything is eventually forgotten to time' is true. But 12 thousand years is nothing in the history of the earth.
