>>137242165 Don't know, but girls fucking love it. Like, it's the only princess-like fairy tale they have. Go to any bookstore with a decent sized manga collection. Most of the shoujo you'll see will have the name "Alice" in it or some shit.
>>137242240 I like it, it's fine, but it's just a fucking children's book that's decently entertaining. Maybe, just like we obsess over taiwanese picture books, they obsess over anglo-saxon children's books. The Disney movie was better than the book though desu senpai
>>137242165 It's one of the few western fairytale-like stories that doesn't just sound foreign and alien to them. Like most folk stories are so culturally centered that they lose all meaning to those outside of that context. Try telling Hanzel and Gretel to somebody not from america and europe and you'll lose them on the first line. It's like trying to tell the story of the peach boy to an american.
Alice in Wonderland is sort of unique in that it isn't really too stuck in a cultural context, and what context there is leans towards that aristocratic victorian british aesthetic that's so vogue in japanese fantasy anyways.
>>137242375 This is why I hate western liberals. >The Church is so evil guys, they dont support gay marriage. I wwish we had a more tolerant religion like Islam.
If you think the Church is evil you seriously have a sheltered life. I dislike the Church, but it has produced some really grat people.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_Damien Fuck you Mother Theresa, this man deserves all the fame you get.
>>137242312 Thats kinda sad. In the West, most girls would probably list some tv bullshit, yet nips are the ones enjoying books. Also, Disney princess bullshit is terrible. >Women are equal to men >Everything turns out happily ever after, even when you are entitled as fuck The Little Mermaid was better when she died for not being satisfied with being an underwater princess.
>>137242583 >Like most folk stories are so culturally centered that they lose all meaning to those outside of that context. I like foreign folklore/myths. I want more anime like Mononoke and games like Okami. I also enjoyed seeing that stuff in Touhou. If I wasnt poor I would probably have bought a bunch of books on Japanese folklore by now. Also I dont want to look like a weeb.
>>137242583 >It's one of the few western fairytale-like stories that doesn't just sound foreign and alien to them. That's weird because the dialogue and text is full of English-specific puns and made-up fantasy words and phrases for the purpose of rhyme.
>>137242718 >I dont know anyone by name, so there are no more good people They are still doing shit like helping leppers, there are people I know who have been allowed to live with monks/nuns when they were homeless, and the salvation army are pretty active in helping people. I havent seen any atheists with organizations on that scale, despite all the bitching about how evil the church is. Oh and most people who whine about the Church tend to gloss over Islam. I guess it's only ok to talk shit about how evil a group is if they wont retaliate and cut your head off.
>>137242858 I could, but I dont really know where to start, they dont have anything along the lines of Grimm's fairy tales, Aesop's Fables and Shinto is a total mess in terms of being organized. I will eventually get around to it. I'm currently reading up on Buddhism and Taoism. (Which I only got interested in due to 2hu)
>>137242898 I dont want them to know what I read. Same reason I havent read Lolita yet, despite lots of people online saying it's good. I also dont want to buy it thinking it will put me on a watchlist.
>>137242787 >and made-up fantasy words and phrases for the purpose of rhyme. This is a big part of why it works in other cultures. It's full of nonsense and made up words, and the point is very clearly in the sound and verse instead of in the specific meanings of words. You don't even have to be able to speak english to appreciate what makes the story timeless, and in fact it's often used public school english classes across the world.
>>137242912 >Oh and most people who whine about the Church tend to gloss over Islam. I guess it's only ok to talk shit about how evil a group is if they wont retaliate and cut your head off. All of you religious nutjobs are the same. I despise all religion. The hardcore Christians are no better than Muslims who call for Sharia Law.
>>137243529 If these crazy nutjob evangelists weren't able to hide behind their bible then we'd be free to call them out for the crazies they are. But they're free to preach their hate speech about gays and women under the guise of "traditional values" held by you dumb fuck religious nuts
It's the same reason people defend Islam. It's "their culture" so they get a pass. It's their culture to kill anyone who objects to Allah, their culture to rape their women as they please and give women 0 rights, etc.
If you do a good deed you can do it without religion backing you. If you preach this hate speech that goes on in the world, you can't do it without religion backing you, otherwise the world will call you out on the nut you are
>>137244070 Christmas is a cultural holiday about christmas trees with lights. It existed and was celebrated by the ancestors of our culture long, long before jesus was born or the word 'bible' had ever been spoken. By your logic, if the muslims changed the date of Eid to correspond with family day, we'd have to cancel it as it's no longer a secular holiday.
People can worship christ on the 24th of december if they so choose, the rest of us (eg. the secular majority) hang stockings on the chimney and leave out milk and cookies for a fat german in a red suit.
>>137242345 >>Shroedinger's cat Steven Hawking once said that he reaches for his gun whenever someone mentions Schrödinger's cat, If I recall. I was never quite sure whether he implied to shoot the other guy or himself probably the former, but over the years, I came to understand why.
>>137244264 >I regard [the many worlds interpretation] as self-evidently correct. [T.F.: Yet some don't find it evident to themselves.] Yeah, well, there are some people who spend an awful lot of time talking about the interpretation of quantum mechanics. My attitude — I would paraphrase Goering—is that when I hear of Schrödinger's cat, I reach for my gun.
He wasn't mad at animu, or teenagers and stoners trying to sound deep, he was mad that people disagreed with him about metaphysics.
>>137244354 It's the same reason western weebs introduce an east-asian character just to make up some stupid-sounding name instead of using a real one. They just hope/assume their readers are far enough removed from that culture to not tell the difference, and use it as an excuse to insert made-up names that they like instead of being stuck with real ones.
>>137242718 Maybe everything isn't so black and white, like your autism would lead you to believe? I'm no christian, but even I have to admit that the churches wrong doings a few hundred years ago, don't undo the massive amount of charity work they do nowadays.
>>137244354 >Blonde, blue eyed, nice clothes, drills or braided hair, and a name lice Alice, Carol, or some white name that your grandmother had, and lives in a mansion >British
>Blonde hair, blue eyed, tattered clothes, boots, pony-tail, simple down, or bushy hair, and has some shortened version of a modern name like Tina, Becky, Jenny, or Brook. Lives in an apartment. >American
>>137242375 >>>Christian Church is actually the biggest evil incarnate >That's true though.
Some religions serve as social technology, facilitating cooperation and coordination between larger groups of people than mere local tribes. That's how you get the great civilizations of Europe and Asia, versus Africa's hell.
>>137244435 Steven Hawking is proof God exist and will strike you down if you're a smug atheist twat.
And you know what, I'll say it, theoretical physics and such don't impress me. Its theoretical, oh boy your played with numbers all day to play with what if scenarios, but you have no means to prove it. I'm so more impressed by Steven Hawking than mechanic or than a doctor.
If he can count stars and numbers all day to come up with the possibility of black holes. He probably could have read, studies, hired a lab assistant to find a cure for his condition or any condition.
In the end, if Steven Hawking did what he does and wasn't in a wheel chair, no one would give a fuck, he'd be another British Atheist wasting science on stuff than helps no one. Its a gimmick that makes his science seem important. Same for Dawkins, if he wasn't so smug and stepping on religious toes, he'd just be some college biology professor in Britain.
