Started watching Gintama and I'm currently at episode 18
I have high hopes for this but right now I'm strugling to watch each episode... The humour is terrible and it seems aimless.
So far the only reasons that keeps me in it is based Sugita as Gintoki and that sometimes the episodes show glimses of the background of the characters.
Yes, I was told that around episode 40 it starts to gets good
Other reason I forgot to put why I picked up this is mfw Spyair making the op
General consensus is that it gets good around ep 25. It actually just gets better and better over time, which is unusual for a long running series, but the running jokes build on themselves and it becomes consistently hilarious. It's worth sticking with, but if you're struggling to watch it, I'd recommend reading some of the manga. It's a quicker way to figure out if you like it, I switched to the anime around vol 6.
Listen to this guy:
Also, the author takes a long time to find his formula (which is "do a 'serious arc' to explore the background of some characters [mainly Gintoki], then goof around for 10 episodes or so")
If you can't stomach the humor, there is a chart some anon made with the relevant 'serious' arcs, so you just jump around them and watch only the relevant shit. (I wouldn't recommend it, tho, because there are many good characters that only appear mostly on 'goofy episodes', like the Shogun.)
> characters that only appear mostly on 'goofy episodes', like the Shogun.
How about GTFO and kill yourself.
If I have done what you say I wouldn't know some masterpieces that Japan delivered
> there is a chart some anon made with the relevant 'serious' arcs
kindly requesting this just for curiosity!
All Gintama's OPs and EDs are god tier.
If you can keep up with it, Gintama becomes incredibly rewarding and it's arguably the best Shonen series.
It is difficult to push through, but stay with it, the running jokes and references in the comedy episodes are golden, and the dramatic arcs have brought me to tears many times.
Great. I plan to watch it all. But this will be helpful
Also, I don't usually recommend "shonen anime" movies, but Gintama's second movie is very good (And it is also pretty stand-alone as long as you know the core characters).
(The first one is just a "HD version" of the Benizakura arc)
Manga is two arcs ahead, but it seems to be ending soon.
Gintama really is a very loose retelling of the end of the shogunate in japan. After the Boshi war, Katsura & friends restored the power to the emperor (which is not the same as the shogun).
Gintama is already on the verge of this war, or maybe the current arc is supposed to be the war. After this they'll be invading Rurouni Kenshin's territory, the Meiji era.
Kek, when I first started watching you gintamafags would always post "it gets better after ep 20" and now you want people to invest more time in this garbage.
To OP if you don't like it so far just drop it. It doesn't get any better and it's the same stupid humor.
No, but I pre-ordered Kamui. Gintama figures have become much more expensive since Megahouse decided to make them exclusives.
Nice. I wish they made a ShigeShige because you know why.. But maybe it's for the best. I'd look at him everyday and want to cry.
You're right, they are getting damn expensive, but I'm glad the line is still alive and well. Kamui looks fantastic.
Never laughed and cried at the same time until this gem saved my life.
Raw emotion and joy is what you have to look forward to, I wish I were you so I could take all of it in again for the first time, without a doubt Gintama is one of the greatest creations ever conceived by man!
Character Poll arc was amazing.
Enjoy it and enjoy the humor until the 300 episode and the final arcs begin
The serious arcs are fucking amazing
Yoshiwara in Flames
I want to count Yagyu arc but there was so much humor during it, it's easily half half
I don't know, I read a lot of people talking shit about Gintama's serious arcs but I think they're pretty fantastic
I think Red Spider might be my favorite
Everything about it
I agree with this 100%
I haven't cried in like 10-12 years or so and the arc where Kagura "dies" was hilarious, this particular part got me closer to crying than anything in the longest fucking time
God damn it KILLED me
I can't imagine how I'll be when one of the main 3 end up dying.
I dunno, I see all this talk of "It's not funny until *blank* episode", but fucking episode 8 is probably still my favorite one, and that early ghost episode is up there too.
I have such a hard time choosing which OP/ED are my favorites
But this one has such a huge fucking lead
Best OP and the fact that they use it as an ED makes it the best as well because it's extended too
Fuck trying to find a full version though
My biggest problem with Gintama is that the threads never fucking last and are far inbetween
Hey Hey Samurai Heart.
I bawled my eyes dry. When I think about it I can still cry...
This one is top tier as fuck
It'd probably be easier to decide which OPs and EDs are BAD instead of which are good because 90% of them are perfect
That's because most of /a/ is bad and has bad taste. I like a good waifu war, but I feel like Gintama is so far beyond most peoples' caliber because they're too impatient, or the humor is too smart.
Personally I think we're the elite. Gintama fans are senpai.
So many unforgettable episodes.
You know what else? When a sidecharacter pops up later on, even 60 episodes later, you remember them instantly. That's an accomplishment. That's good writing.
All the characters are parodies/tropes/cliches, and they're all unique and memorable at the same time
I think the funny arcs really compliment the serious ones. Kaguras one of the funniest characters in the show so when you see bad shit happening to her its really heartbreaking. I don't think this last arc would have the same impact without the Shogun comedy episodes.
What episode or moment made you cry the most?
What made you laugh the hardest?
(pic not related, I'm curious about your guys')
Gintoki and Kagura are based on legends (Sakata no Kintoki/Kintaro and the lunar princess Kaguya)
Shinpachi was based on a Shinsengumi guy
Okita was supposed to die of tuberculosis (his sister died instead, IRL it was the opposite)
Sakamoto should die at any moment now, in the events following the Boshi war
Kondo is supposed to die having been blamed of Sakamoto's death by Katsura
>Kondo is supposed to die having been blamed of Sakamoto's death by Katsura
I know they're of different factions but can anyone really see Katsura doing that to someone he's spent time/struggles with?
Katsura absolutely won't. He would maybe before hand in some hilarious Joi Patriot vs Bakufu comedy episode with shenanigans. The Shogun Assassination arc is a complete game changer though. The Shinsengumi and Katsura are now comrades more than enemies. There's a mutual respect that's been developing with them over time.
In fact, I would expect
Katsura to be joining the fight to rescue Kondo from persecution in the current arc.
Almost impossible to pick a laughing one out
I think if I was forced to choose, it'd be the one with the boxer who lets people beat him up for cash and Kagura takes him all along the town
Also the same episode leads into the Hedoro family going to the bathhouse with Gintama/shinsengumi
Good lord I definitely remember laughing so hard I ended up crying with those two episodes
Gintama doesn't follow 100% of the real world history, but many major events do occur. Who knows what that gorilla has in reserve for our future.
Shinsengumi did end, Shigeshige died, Nobunobu wasn't strong enough to secure his claim.
>What episode or moment made you cry the most?
>Ending of Shinsengumi rebellion
>Ending of Four Devas
>old man & dog
>What made you laugh the hardest?
This is impossible to answer
>popularity poll arc
>misc eps, like Hijikata won lottery & Kagura couldn't sleep
Also what made me laugh on some earlier watch through may not amuse me later so much. But then there's some jokes I never got properly until I had watched/read the referenced show and when I got it I was cry-laughing. Good example is that hot spring arc, with the JoJo and Seikima II stuff.
Loudest laugh I gave came from the second movie.
When Gintoki is making a speech to Tae on her last moments, then we are reminded he's talking that shit while looking like a giant penis with a mole.
OP thank you for posting. I fell off about 3 years ago. I will pick it back up one of my favorite shows. Like everyone says it's great you're going to fall in love with all the characters so you wouldn't mind all the goofy/nonsense eps. Have fun.
Probably Takasugi punching the shit out of Gintoki or Kagura shouting YAMERO when Abuto was punching the shit out of Shinpachi.
The episode where the Shinsengumi/Odd Jobs had to seduce Otsu. When narrator Sougo joins in the best Ghibli girl conversation I lose my shit and the Odds Jobs premise is just hilarious on its own.
>What episode or moment made you cry the most?
I literally have an (almost empty) folder called "Crying Folder" in which there is the 214th episode of Gintama. This one -> >>137181650
The only other thing in that folder is the HIMYM episode where Barney asks Robin to merry him, but after seeing how they fucked everything up in the last episode I'm considering removing it
Personally I only thought it started to get funny at around episode 20~.
Basically if you get up to the part where they start breaking the 4th wall and talking about timeslot changes and being closed to getting canceled because the show had been bombing (seems to be the general consensus that the anime sucked at the beginning) and you still don't find it funny by then, then it's probably not for you.
Nice, this fucking scene man.
I mad it to episode 50.
By then I was so tired of all the references to nippon culture i will never ever know anything about.
Like fucking live action TV shows from the 80s thats like the A-team or MacGyver over in Japan, but noone else has ever heard of.
I get the humor and its very funny sometimes, but having to pause to read a wall of text TL-note because why this joke about Detective Niggerdicks from 1979 is funny killed the show for me.
They gradually phase off doing nihonese references every episode as the cast increases and slowly replace them with toilet humor and in-jokes.
They still do them, but not as much as they did in the first two or three seasons. They even stop doing parodies to other anime every episode too.
It seems that the gorilla used those as crutches until he had enough material to work properly. Of course he still use them sometimes, but now he can rely on character interactions to do his thing.
GinxTsukki is patrician taste
I commend you for your refined taste, sir.
>Gintama appreciation thread
>The humour is terrible and it seems aimless
I started to watch Gintama when the anime was relased, so many years ago. I watched only the first 50 episodes saying "Meh". I started to see it again many years after because happened, and I appreciated it more, a now is one of my favourite anime, and I can't imagine to be without it. I can't say why, probably the reason was that the old me, liked more the character MADAO, sadly actually is not very visible in the anime.
