>>136316110 >yet he still goes even with less sleep Believing the hype...
Standard editorial boilerplate. "It's just Oda and a pen, drawing everything that moves", "and please don't photograph his eleven assistants; and that row of Wacom Cintiqs over there doesn't exist. You can photograph that messy desk over there, that's it".
The "super-hardworking-mangaka" is an old trope that stems from the modern manga-god Osamu Tezuka. He really did put in 80 hour weeks; but he was often doing 4-6 serializations weekly (100-200 pages, not 24), using just a g-pen and later some screen-tone. Things have changed significantly in the last 50 years, but every publisher wants to publicly pretend they have a stable of Tezukas.
Oda was extremely fucking busy when he was doing the movie as well, but that was just a temporary situation.
>>136321592 he'll probably do much shorter works after OP ends. The mans a visionary, a creative genius. He's one of those rare people who are all about vision and passion. It was never about the money, that was just a bonus. He's more like a medium, a channel for the crazy shit roiling about in his head. he ain't gonna stop til he drops
>>136323097 I'm not sure you know what the word 'visionary' means. First of all, the guy never established an over-arching narrative with a definite motion toward a definite conclusion, its a story that he lets unfold in a typical never-ending shounen manner. That is the opposite of visionary, of having a vision. The art can be imaginative, sure, but that's not the same. Nor is it very detailed or good as a style. It's goofy, really. Nothing wrong with goofiness but that doesn't really coincide with something being 'visionary'.
The difference between something like One Piece and Berserk is that Berserk has an obvious and intentional and meticulously crafted narrative, as well as a refined art style and an wonderful world-building. That is 'vision'.
The only thing something like One Piece seems to be intent on is having the narrative continue indefinitely until the author tires of it.
>>136323357 Nope. One Piece has been heading towards a very definite climax that will be a conclusive and it will be satisfying. Everything, EVERYTHING, is coming to a head; the secret Ancient Weapons, the final World War that shall determine who really governs the seas and put an end to the Pirate-Marine-Rev. Army deadlock that has existed for decades, Luffy's goal, The Lost History, the mystery of Roger. EVERYTHING is going to be resolved, and its going to be glorious. Oda had shown us that he has a vision; I know it sounds like I've drank the spiked Kool-Aid, but its true. Since Alabasta, its been revving up towards something. It has had a very obvious destination for a while now. The only problem is that it is still far off, and Oda is still withholding soe cards because he doesn't want to show his full deck just yet. Its frustrating, but it'll be worth it when the story hits its climax and then, its conclusion. Hopefully the new Berserk chapter might be out by then :3
>>136316079 Poor Oda, he does try absurdly hard so he deserves the money. But personally I'd rather live like Togashi, must be nice to only try a few weeks a year and still make bank along with his even richer wife.
>>136324215 what's his waifu do? And you probably don't want that; imagine all the shit he has to deal with on a daily basis. His editor is probably hounding him 24/7, his fellow mangaka probably think he's a lazy jackass and his wife must give him a little shit on the side as well.
>>136324399 no one hassles and nags like the Japanese, but yeah, even they have to have given up after all these years, they have adult shit to do after all. And holy shit, the lucky bastard, he's hit the fucking jackpot. You think he'd get his ass back in his big boy pants if she left him?
>>136323692 I'm sorry to burst your bubble but that is simply not how manga like naruto, bleach, one piece, fairy tail, etc, are crafted. Shounen manga intentionally establish a setting that can contain a narrative that can be prolonged indefinitely.
>>136324557 this. only reason he's not giving Rowling a run for her money. Then again, its never been about the money with Oda. Not really. His wife and kids probably care about the money he makes more than he does.
>>136324581 I have to disagree. Often times these manga are planned to end earlier, but are kept going due to popularity. Oda has said he planned for it to end way earlier, but enjoys writing it so he has no reason to stop.
>>136324555 >no one hassles and nags like the Japanese wrong. nips don't hassle and nag so much. they usually just confirm if you understand what they want. chinese assume you can do what is expected of you. koreans take the time to go over shit in detail
>>136324581 I know that. I also wasn't talking about those other manga. Manga is the perfect medium for Oda because he can go wild with his imagination and weave his story nice and long, just the way he likes it. I heard a rumor that Oda initially planned to end OP somewhere in 05 because he didn't think it had a long lifespan, but was happy doing what he did. If you notice its after the chapters released in 05 that the foundations for the story arcs we're reading now were being put in place. He was given the greenlight to continue, and he took off and never looked back. Maybe the other manga don't have vision, and you honestly don't need to be a visionary to have a successful manga, but OP does. God, I just keep falling for your bait over and over again. anon...I...I think I might be in love with you
>>136324767 I see, I see. I guess I just thought they were super naggy because of all the "stern Japanese parents" archetypes you see in movies, games and manga. Always a grain of truth in every stereotype
>>136324759 >Oda revealed that he originally planned One Piece to last five years, and that he had already planned out the ending, but he found himself enjoying the story too much to and now does not yet intend to end the series
>Oda stated that the ending will be what he had decided on from the beginning and is committed to seeing it through
He already have set key arcs, and semi-filler arcs to pad the length.
Still nicer than detective conan whose key arcs only comes for every 100 chapter.
>>136324636 Yeah no, Harry Potter is worth a lot more than One Piece. The books are the highest selling series of all time and the movies are the second highest grossing franchise of all time. She's a billionaire and manga is appropriately cheap compared to what she sells.
>>136325100 probably why Oda is butthurt the whole West (aka Murca) isn't as crazy over OP as the East and some parts of Europe and the Americas are. If only he could break America, he'd truly be king.
>>136325149 Of course, but anon thinks Oda could give Rowling a run for her money if the publishers were more generous. That's just ridiculous fanboyism, the franchise just isn't anywhere near as huge.
>>136325359 well there is some truth to what he's saying nip businessmen usually just set a target and only aim to exceed it they don't do it like western businessmen who put shit out as much as they can to make the biggest profit
but yes it's just fanboyism. oda does have the potential to become world famous though.
>>136326206 >posts opinion unsupported by constructive criticism I don't need constructive criticism to shit on a manga like OP, the flaws are so obvious that pointing them out would be just a waste of time. Shitty characters, stupid fights, asspull powerups, story arcs rehashing etc., you already know them.
>(You) You just outed yourself as a newfag redditor, (You)s are not upvotes. Fuck off.
In one of the Q&A pages in the tankobon he said that he has had the last chapter planned out for a long time. I'm pretty sure he has a direction he's going in but I hope it all comes together before he kicks the bucket. Maybe when he hits 50 or 60 he will realize he needs to start wrapping things up.
