for some one who has only ever watched the animated series would like to ask is it worth reading the manga from the very beginning of Dragonball and if so how long would it take to catch up?

Goku was carrying thousands of tons of water on his back in Super like it was nothing. He could throw King Piccolo as a teen like he was nothing (and given his size, he weight a lot more than 40 tons).

Toriyama just has no sense of how much things weigh.
