Except DBZ was poorly directed and lacked any impact. G Gundam might have poor animation/pacing but it was on point where it counted and knew exactly what it was. The final fight with master Asia was way more hype than anything from DBZ.

Sunrise seemed determined to fuck over his creative control of the show at every turn, which is why we got stuff like episode 4 airing before episode 1, because "you can't have the Gundam not appear for 3 episodes". The late 80s-early 90s marked the beginning of directors becoming little more than the guy who brings to life the executive producer's vision.
