Sorry, I should be more clear. They should have changed these things in a more significant manner. At the end of the day, 2.22 still traces the same general arc that the middle arc of NGE does. Shinji and the crew start coming to an understanding with one another, then everything starts falling apart due to unfortunate circumstances. Sure, the subtleties are tweaked a bit, but at the end of the day it's more or less the same.

Could you tell me exactly in what way? It's easy to say that the subtle differences somehow resulted in a different outcome but I couldn't tell you exactly why. The Rebuilds just don't explain themselves well enough to do so. Stuff like Eva God Mode is completely pulled out of the writers ass just for the apparent purpose of being different, and that's not the only time this happens in Rebuild.

Asuka makes an attempt to understand Shinji, this leads Shinji to reciprocate. Shinji's relationship with Rei is also growing, and when Asuka realizes this she takes Rei's place to test Unit 04 so Rei can throw the dinner party she's planning.

Here's the problem: I don't really think Shinji's connection to Rei is any stronger in Rebuild than it was in NGE. If God Mode were a thing that Unit-01 has always been able to do, I would have activated at some point in NGE, either during the fight against Armisael or after the MP Eva Attack. This is what leads me to believe God Mode was just thrown in for no reason other than to change things up.

Notice how in NGE, after unit 01 covers her hand over Shinji in an effort to protect him, Gendo smiles at this?

It's the first huge indicator we get about the Yui=unit 01 plot twist in the anime series.

Now, let's look at what happens in Rebuild 1.0.:

This first and foremost indicates that the giant plot twist for Rebuild revolves around Shinji and Rei's relationship to each other, and what it means for the grand scheme in Gendo's master plans.

Conclusion: The giant mindfuck plot twists that will completely shock everyone will be a combination of the following:
Shinji isn't human.
He was never human.
Shinji is some kind of FAR-like entity with a direct connection to impacts as a certified awakening trigger, like Rei or Kaworu.

Shinji's relationship to Rei is critical to the outcome of instrumentality, and his relationship with her is saturated in innate, maternal undertones. These undertones share strong parallels with unit 1/Yui had for Shinji in NGE and some partial areas of Rebuild.

Shinji is overtaking the maternal role of Lilith and unit 01/Yui in these movies.


Shinji is Rei/Lilith's true mother. Rebuild is about an expecting ayy family who was going to rebirth the human race into lovely versions of their developing, unborn kid until shit went haywire via "sin from genesis" some billion or so years prior. Now the family is completely fucked up, reincarnated and brainwashed and everything is all fucking wrong. SEELE are trying to revert that, but in way that only benefits themselves, resurrecting Lilith (the unborn child) but killing "god" (the parents) in the process. The only one who might remotely remember anything from their ayy past is the father and he was played like a fiddle under Gendo's nose.

Bigger question you should be asking is, what's the deal with unit 01 now?

We know that it's one of the four Adams and that it was triggered via awakening through the crazy shit that happened between Shinji + Rei + Zeruel, and that it acts as a battery to power the Wunder's core (aka it's now a baby in a giant womb during 3.0) but that's about it.
