Rakudai/Asterisk basically try to compress the good points of Shana. A MC who develops through the story in interesting ways becoming stronger over time through a fuckload of training and ends up becoming the villain due to circumstances? Well whatever, let's just make the MC the hair to the demon lord from episode 1, or make them the strongest with a small dumb twist.
Have a girl who has her reasons for being tsundere at first due to how she was brought up and MC being just an object to her [Torch] and developing their relationship as logically as animelogic possibly until it ends in a lover's spat fight where they reconcile and kiss? Nah let's just make MC peek at the tsundere princess while she's changing and just have her keep being tsun because fuck normal human behavior.

Because the novels aren't as popular as Shana was back then so they get 12 eps now normally, plus you have to remember that all battle harem adaptations now are still trying to recreate what IS did.
The adaptations are basically just ads to see if the novel becomes a hit like IS.
Shana was only 26 episodes at first, but the series remained a hit so it got a second season and then much later a third season to end it.

Yes, SnS was still a contemporary fantasy with a bunch of chuuni powers and fights but at least Bal Masque and the other villains still had their own agendas and goals to work toward. It's a personal peeve but I feel like having sanctioned fights is just a cop-out for more compelling conflicts to create that kind of setting for a fight.

No fucking around Harem basically. Establish from the fucking start it's a harem with 4-5 girls that pander to different tastes. Now give all of them different gimmicks in regards to how they treat the MC while also giving them a dash of tsun/yan and add some dere to finish it off. And of fucking course you need to have the MC be a special snowflake in the whole world who has a special power/is the only male who can use magic/mechs whatever. This works specially well with mechs since Japan loves their robots.


Now let's hope Bahamut this season becomes a fucking hit, because at least the main girls look good in this and Kasuga Ayumu deserves more recognition.
