You are now the Majority Share-holder for Funimation. What changes do you make?
Remember, English dubbing is so fucked up that if you fire all your voice actors, you'll also be firing the scriptwriters, because the job of turning the translation into a serviceable dub script usually falls to one of the actors.
Take advice from a wise samurai mentor.
Wow, this is real. They can go fuck themselves though. This is what happens when you shit on your loyal consumers with shitty localized pop culture referencing garbage.
Oh right, that. I guess that is shooting yourself in the foot using shitty pop culture references in your dubs. That shit has no place in dubs or translations as it horribly dates a product.
That's possible. Majority share is less than 3 million dollars. Some rich anon could actually buy Funimation. I was just looking at their page on nasdaq and I might consider buying $100 or so.
They started to simul-dub.
HS corrected Funi rip, they don't have a shitty contrasted video anymore but it's still shit.
They picked up a lot of anime that their viewers dropped after one or two episodes (Absolute Duo/Yuri Kuma/Arslan Senki/Chaos Dragon/Aquarion Logos/Kuusen Madoushi/Ranpo Kitan/Sore ga Seiyuu!/Shimoneta/DBSuper?)
>share holders impacting a company decision making
/a/ really is retarded, shareholders are the financer of a company, but they don't dictate the direction of a company, that the job of the board of directors and top management.
It's not just that. When ANN reported Funi's responses on it I saw comments from users saying they had no idea what the phrase meant. Internet wars are still niche enough that internet users won't always get it.
Also, it's suggesting a lot about the character and their interests that weren't in the original text. Pop culture references will always make it seem like a character watches certain media or likes certain artists, so it has to be equivalent to the author's intentions when lines are changed. Either way Japanese school girls in Japan shouldn't care.
I always loved Viz. I just hope they never go under like ADV Films, U.S.Manga Corps, or Anime Works. Actually, I could be wrong. ADV Films should still be releasing products. I don't know.
Funi, Sentai and ADV(RIP) are/were in Texas, near Dallas, so that's the top destination for weebs wanting to voice act. New York was the other one in the 90s, but since Central Park Media shut down, that's taken a hit.
There was never a huge dub scene in CA aside from Los Angeles, where you and everyone else go to see their dreams of all walks of showbiz wither and die.
I want Texas voice actors head down to California mandatory same with Canadian voice actors to give those commie fucks something to bitch more about because they are not getting paid or whatever bullshit spews out.
Here's a list for 2015
I even forgot the worst one of them Denpa Kyoushi, a 24 episode anime with a budget for 3.
ADV is still around in some form, but they've sold off just about all their assets and licenses. Sentai was founded as a spin-off of ADV as a way to continue licensing and poorly dubbing anime without the baggage of ADV's bankruptcy.
probably change their application to be more like Crunchyrolls. For some retarded reason Funi only likes to give people access to 1 or 2 episodes of a show ontop of ads if you aren't subcribed. at least Crunchy lets people watch it all if only a week late. Like its no wonder you never hear people talk about watching Funimation, its because not even funimation wants you to watch it.
They were pretty bad, but they are only guilty of using modern American slang, and lingo. That in itself would date the anime, not so much. Not using pop culture references that would date it worse.
>There was never a huge dub scene in CA aside from Los Angeles, where you and everyone else go to see their dreams of all walks of showbiz wither and die.
I know but Sabat could do well voice acting in general,he has that kind of talent.
True. Most anime actors do much more voicework than anime because any one of them will tell you that anime will NOT pay the bills. So most do stuff like industrials, which are narrating small time videos or other projects that usually aren't commercially released, but still pay. Like if you've ever worked at any retail job, they've made you sit and watch shitty videos with people horribly acting out the job you're doing and if there's a narrator, there's a chance that's an anime dubber paying their rent.
1. move whole company into a very high building
2. become a pilot
That's Funi's biggest drag right now. They're doing the simul-dub to be on top of any hit from Japan as soon as it's out. But that also means they're right on top of any flop as it comes out and they're obligated to see that shit through to the end.
If they want to survive, they can't keep banking on EVERYTHING being a money-making hit and only simuldub normalfag-friendly casual titles that have a big enough name behind them that can insure they turn a profit.
I just want to say, I'm glad companies like AnimEigo and Discotek are still around.
I've loved the BubbleGum Crisis BD that AnimEigo funded through Kickstarter and am waiting on my copy of Otaku no Video and will be giving money to their Riding Bean campaign once they get it going.
I like using new technology like Kickstarter to do more efficiently what AnimEigo did in the 90s.
It's getting notice, too. They hired Sonoda to do some art for the campaign for BGC and he did even more art and a mini-manga when they got around to Otaku no Video. Also, Gainax opened up its old offices and dug out a bunch of goodies to give to AnimEigo to give to its backers. I was sad that I was too late to get any original Gianax OnV posters.
I also love that Discotek is still around, not big, but they're often able to grab the rights to obscure and older titles that have fallen through the cracks that Funi was too good for.
Step 1: Fix the website.
Step 2: Stop wasting money on dubs no one wants. Release subs and if it gets popular offer a dub upgrade.
Step 3: Fix the website.
Step 4: Fly all the ADR directors to Japan so they can learn how to do it right. Better yet, fire the assholes and bring a couple Japanese guys here.
Step 5: Fix the damn website.
Step 6: Theatrical releases. Nothing better than getting weebs to pay twice for anime.
Step 7: WHY THE FUCK CAN'T YOU MAKE A PROPER WEBSITE FOR WATCHING ANIME THAT DOESN'T LITERALLY RAPE YOUR EYEBALLS
I really do think that if all companies just dropped dubbing and hired translators instead of cocky failed scriptwriters the industry would be healthier.
>put better quality subs
>TL notes can be turned on or off
>make the dubs meme dubs like ghost stories or yamada's first time
>release BD packs of old OVAs that are cheap to license as double or triple features (2-4 movies on 1 disk)
>each BD is uncensored and contains all the specials, web omakes, all that jazz
>box sets of completed series
>promote all that shit at cons and give out shit like anime pens, postcards, keychains, umbrellas ect
Im split on them as an anime company. Because usually pick up the most casual shit and the bury anything that isnt Naruto/Inuyasha/Death Note. For example they fucked up royaly on the dub of 99 HxH so Im scarred how they're gonna handle the 2011 version.
As a manga company they are hit and miss.
instead of wasting money on shit American voice actors they could use that money on buying more IP to flog and average pleb audience won't be needed when they've snagged titles at a quicker rate attracting more people with more options instead of a handful of titles urinated on by people who obviously hate what they are doing.
Why would a company EVER pander to the weeaboos on /a/? It doesn't matter if they bent over backwards to accommodate every one of this board's neurotic whims, /a/nons make it a point of pride that they never buy anything anyway - so what have you got to give them?
>/a/ really is retarded, shareholders are the financer of a company, but they don't dictate the direction of a company, that the job of the board of directors and top management.
Speaking of really retarded; you don't seem to understand that the majority shareholder can easily replace the entire board of directors, with his own regime.
Funimation makes anime for the "average pleb audience" because tasteful patricians like yourself never want to pay for anything.
No what was worse was the retards trying pull every excuse out of their ass defending it.
>Guize it adds more to the dub
>1 to 1 translations are boring. Western Anime fans dont undterstand the Japanese school ranking order.
I don't have the pic but in the last episode they crammed the whole shit together and you couldn't read anything at all.
Even if you hate GG, or don't care about it, or think that it is cringy, or whatever.
This flagrant disrespect for the source material and cutting shit out to push your own political agenda and show the feminists (who, by the way, won't ever touch a show like Prison School; not the feminists who would be pleased by this jab at least) that you're a good boy should result in the person/people responsible being fired.
If you couldn't do any better to properly adhere to the source material, that's different. Here, they just chose not to: ergo, they deliberately did a shit job because they were more salty about an online hashtag than they were professional about doing their job.
I wish I could start a new dubbing company and pick up shows that somehow get passed up by everyone but probably has a really small niche fanbase.
For example Im a fan of Sket Dance. Yet no one licensed it.
I'd buy SZS from Media Blaster s seeing as they are never gonna do anything with that.
I'm fairly sure any respectable anime watcher would object to a salty dude shoe-horning his contextless political jab into a series that has literally zero to do with it, making it take the slot of an otherwise more relevant or accurate-to-the-sub phrase or sentence.
That is not even the worst of it. They've fallen a LONG ways from before.
That was 1998 during the dot-com boom. It traded 1,232,032 shares @ $0.06 today. Higher than I expected, but still not a lot of money compared to its share price. Basically $72,000 traded today.
If you want a comparison to an actual company, KO (coca-cola) traded 16,245,132 shares @ $42.32 today, or roughly $685 million.
I feel like Funi became super shit after ADV came back as Sentai. Think about it.
Sentai somehow kept globblong up shows thay were never gonna dub. More than half their catalog is sub only. This in turn forced Funi to do simulcast/dubs.
Also the quality of their dub scripts dropped. They add in buzzwords, memes, jokes that you would see in a Sentai dub so they can appeal to casuals.
Its like Funi is scared of Sentai for some reason even though Sentai poses no treat at all.
Funimation is owned by Group 1200 Media and are not on the stock market.
That chart has nothing to do with funimation.
Have Richard Epcar voice every character in every show.
Gamergate had no reason to be referenced, none at all. I wasn't mad about it because I "support it" I was mad because it was even mentioned at all.
And anyone who complained about it was called a supporter of GG, death threats, and rape threats. That made me fucking mad. I hope that writer is fucking fired.
Stop with the simuldubs. There is no reason to dub an anime if you won't be able to sell it on home video, and dubs are already of varying quality that producing them quickly just makes them worse.
This, holy fuck. Viz completely BUTCHERED Hunter x Hunter 1999 with their abysmal dub, they even fucked up with the DVD releases.
I don't care for dubs but I shiver at the thought of Viz ruining 2011, which they will most likely do anyway. They simply won't be able to pulling off several characters in English.
This. Release DB and DBZ without fucking cropping it or blowing out the colors & contrast.
And keeping the original episode titles
>It's bad being the Fonz
bullshit. HE JUMPED A FUCKING SHARK! WITH HIS JACKET
Funi and Sentai are in Texas, but Viz and Aniplex seem to do a lot of stuff with Studiopolis which is in LA. Plus as far as VA stuff goes a lot of video games are done out there too along with promo/commercial work so California is a better bet
Those that weren't part of SAG(not much of an accomplishment, really) were often part of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists(AFTRA) which recently merged with SAG so now most VAs(anime, vidya and 'Murrican toons) are members of SAG without effort.
Nigga you see their website? It's a miracle their even a thing still
Sentai releases most of their stuff sub only, and are actually the biggest distributor of anime in the US as far as actual products released annually.
Funimation plays the long game by dubbing almost everything they get, assuming it's something they think they can dump. I used to work in a video store and Rosario + Vampire was one of our best sellers for a good while. The first season of High School DxD as well, which is fucking weird they would even dub that. Hell they even dubbed Show By Rock
So why is it ok for other medias to use pop culture to spread their agendas?
Such as the new Star Wars movie. The movie is clearly anti white and blanda up propaganda, but no one bitches about it.
>The movie is clearly anti white and blanda up propaganda, but no one bitches about it.
There's a difference between actually using a media to directly spread pop culture and bullshit that exists solely inside your brain.
...even 80s censored whitewashed chinese cartoons weren't this bad; they didn't mock their target audience while pushing their overt sjw agenda. please tell me that cocksucker was fired.
You're going to tell me that all the villains were white was a coincidence, and that the scene with storm trooper with the stick just happens to have a riot shield that looks much like what cops use and the "black guy" just happens to beat the storm trooper?
>You're going to tell me that all the villains were white was a coincidence
If they had a part where they literally said "yeah black lives matter" or "you can't beat me with your male privilege" you'd have a point, but they don't this is just your interpretation of it so it's not the same as what funi did
Considering the Empire was not-at-all-subtly based on the very pro-white Nazi Germany, there's a reason they've very white.
Other than that, your ramblings are the sort of pathetic shit /tv/ would come up with.
Have you heard of the term, subconscious indoctrination? The black guy won against the cop trooper so now people will draw parallels to cops in real life and view cops as "bad guys" and make people more against authority.
There is if it demonizing an organization that try to defend crazy people.
And had to be saved by big, white Han Solo.
Just report and ignore the idiot. He's just regurgitating bullshit he read on /pol/ or /tv/ in an effort to derail the thread.
Not that there's any thread left to save.
Oh look, Setnai just licensed another fucking generic high school series that won't be subbed and probably by brought by like 50 people.
I guess Funimation needs to respond by simuldubbing something that fans won't care for in 3 episodes.
There was no reason for a scene where the Storm Trooper to have a stick and riot shield in the first place. You didn't see things like that in the older Star Wars.
So there is no reason why the gamergate dub should bother anyone unless they have some leftist bias.
I'm not derailing anything. It just makes me question why it's ok for one side to spread their agenda, but it isn't ok when the other side does it too for anime? I mean, I don't see you guys getting up in arms over dubs when they put in their leftist ideals. I mean, do I need to remind you about Angel Cop and how much the dialogue got changed?
It's because you're comparing apples and oranges.
Let's say for the moment that you're right, and Star Wars: TFA is specifically trying to push an agenda. Sure, that sucks, whatever. But the anime in question was made with no such agenda, and was altered after the fact in order to do so. That alteration is what we're objecting to, not necessarily to the pushing of agendas itself.
TFA is a cake with chocolate frosting. The anime was a cake with vanilla frosting, but someone came and scraped some of it off and added some chocolate to it. We're not objecting necessarily to people making chocolate cake, we're objecting to people altering our vanilla cake.
It's the same shit as Barry Watson was pulling back in the early 2000s with the DBZ dub, punching up the script with stupid bullshit like 'mondo cool,' and jokes about shampoo or being a shoe salesman.
Fuck, just make the dub script accurate and you will still please people that watch dubs, and you will also please the people that give a fuck about accuracy, and not having stupid 'haha get it' jokes for the sake of the script-writer getting their jollies.
if it were just them injecting their shitty personal biases into an anime where it didn't fucking belong, that'd be one thing.
but the people involved with this line decided to act like royal douchebags on twitter about it, going after people questioning their decision and trying to come up with excuses for why they couldn't just dub the line correctly.
I first make it so that I find the person responsible for the subs for both GARO shows and kick them in the ass for translating Makai Priest into Makai Alchemist.
The next step is to make sure I will get the rights for the next Digimon show after Tri.
anime industry is dead. im already taking my leave and moving to collecting stamps because i know that by the end of this ride im going to kill myself if left unprepared. i love you guys see you never
