I never see this on any top 10 lists, and barely ever hear it mentioned, even though it's up with the greats. Maybe people just didn't like the first episode?
It's underrated because a lot of people who liked Gunbuster were upset it's different, and a lot of people who would've liked Diebuster didn't like Gunbuster so they never got around to watching it.
Second best Gainax show.
No fuck off.
You know what's underrated? Abenobashi.
Because it's shit. Only good thing about it is the animation and its OP. If you're going to bother putting this trash in your top 10 then Gunbuster better be above it or you need to remove yourself from the gene pool.
Because as mentioned before, it isn't what people thought when they thought "Gunbuster 2".
However that's the reason WHY it's so great in my opinion. It's a show that contrasts modern vs. classic Gainax. The plot is also well done in the sense that you don't think it's Gunbuster 2
then hits you over the head with HEY ASSHOLE WE'RE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT EARTH SO NORIKO HAS A HOME TO COME BACK TO REMEMBER?!which makes the ending feel that much more powerful.
So while I do feel you can watch Gunbuster by itself, Diebuster adds to the original in a way that is truly unique. They are like two sides of the same coin.
You had to watch Gunbuster to fully appreciate Diebuster and not a lot of people watched Gunbuster because "80s anime looks so old and ugly"
It's their loss desu.
>then hits you over the head with
a brain-damaged attempt to save the Earth by using it as the main attack weapon against the space monsters.
In any case, by 2004, Gunbuster's main contribution to the state of the art had been long forgotten.
Don't mind me guys, just chillin' over here doing nothing wrong.
And i'm like "The detail is ugly"
Old anime just looks shitty.
New anime isn't crash hot with QUALITY in every show in every season now, but at least the character design is somewhat appealing now.
There's a certain show you had to watch to fully appreciate Gunbuster and not a lot of people watched it because "70s anime looks so old and ugly"
It's their loss facebookmeme.
>but at least the character design is somewhat appealing now.
That basically means the characters are:
Super-cute in some corny way
Big spiky green hair
Giant cute eyes
Ridiculous and impractical outfits
Absurd weapons that make no sense
>decent, ending was meh, hear second season is worse with a shit ending so decide not to pick it up
>watch 9 eps Abenobashi, enjoy most of it outside of Imaishi's episode, now I hear it has a shit ending too
The fuck Gainax.
I even felt like FLCL should have ended when he swung the bat.
Groovin' Magic gave me bad flashbacks to 1970s disco.
Sounds like your describing your shitty 80s OVAs to me.
