In a show filled with insane powers, Achiga crew is so lame.

Why does everyone hate Shizu's new flame powers as if they came out of nowhere?

When she first revealed the 'mountainside' powers in Achiga-hen, an unexplained flame effect was behind her, and started making a circle that wasn't completed in the end, because the match ended.

And yet now everyone is complaining as if it came completely out of nowhere?

Even at the time, everyone commented on how Shizu had 'yet untapped powers', or something to that effect. Is everyone complaining just people who have never watched/read Achiga?

Shizu started developing her powers during middle school, that is, in the time skip, after Harue left the children club. Also it's not an aura that she has the whole time or that she can instantly switch on, she needs preparation (practice games before the match) and she could only release it fully at the end of the final match.

The first hint that we got was against Koromo (flame symbols and later Koromo's warning), that's pretty early considering that the qualification tournament ended in a few pages.

Also remember that against weaker schools (qualification tournament, first round in the national tournament) Kuro and Yuu smashed their opponents, the later players only had to win swift cheap hands. That was a complaint of FunaQ, she couldn't completely understand Arata's playing style from the previous records.

But I agree that they could have done it better in the quarterfinal match.

I thought that was way late. I mean if she's extraordinary why not hint it right from the start? Why not have the characters just discuss her development, or Shizu herself comment on it prior to the semi.

Her real power is increased tendency to form kans, being able to detect when a kan can be made, and what is contained in the four dead wall kan tiles. She simply uses those kans and feeding others calls to control the table and get +-0. It seemed like kans and rinshan weren't the main deal way back when because she didn't need to rely on it to get +-0 then - she lowered the value of certain hands because she was doing too damn well even without using it. In rough spots like Koromo however, we see her using it frequently because she needed it to win. The table and point control isn't a power, it's a result of her using kans and sense. The quarterfinals are a good demonstration of what she does and how shes does it.
