Depends on the series, the good ones have an interesting protag.

Harems are judged by the girls and TLR has some good ones. Specifically, Yami and Mikan carry the manga pretty hard.

There's nothing wrong with having an interesting MC. TLR has a pretty boring MC, but the girls are all so good that it doesn't matter.

all i ever wanted from a harem was the MC having genuine feelings and arcs for each girl and then either getting a true harem ending after having to figure out a way to make it happen and convince the heroines, with possibly one or two girls not wanting to be part of something like that and leaving OR the MC realizing he can't pick one but the harem will also not work so decides to dump them all so they can move and be happy.

the second case could even transition to a plain romance with the MC later in life meeting one of the girls who tried to move on with her life but didn't do too well and them awkwardly becoming a vanilla couple, with the rest of the girls helping on the side.

but oh well, guess that's too much to ask for.
