Smile just as wide as she does.

Also, finally a chance to post pic related.
I instruct a first year physics/engineering students lab experiment in my university. Before every experiment, the students have a short (15-minute) quiz on the relevant material. This time, I decided to draw them a Miyako to cheer them on.
And yet no one managed to answer the third question. I guess even Miyako couldn't inspire any competence within them.

Proceed to live in the Hidamari apartments and never leave.

If absolutely no one could do it, it wasn't their fault.
>>

I call bullshit, depending on how shithead the students are its entirely possible.
>>
>>118499585
There has to be at least one big dick nerd on every class, if even he can't do it then the question wasn't appropriate.

That's adorable. I tutored a QM class and the most I could draw were Sae's glasses.

You need to try harder for your students then! How can you expect them to do their best if they don't have Miyako to cheer them on?

That reminds me. I discovered this in class a few days ago.
>>
>>118500006
That really makes me want to sneak into the lab and draw a Miyako or Yuno when no one is looking. Too bad it would likely end up looking like an unrecognisable mess.
>>
>>118499986
It's more like there were many things to cover and my office hours start right after the tutorial.
Things are different this semester. There'll probably be more time to draw wide things.
>>
>>118499519
No, it was totally their fault. Second year industrial engineering students who literally can't correctly write the energy conservation equation for a fucking cart pulled by a string attached to a falling weight? It has everything to do with them, and nothing to do with the difficulty of the question (which is so easy I would hesitate giving it to 10th grade students).

>>118499641
They come in groups of 8, and unfortunately lately I've only been getting the industrial engineering students, who are weaker.

>>118500102
It's okay anon, I have zero talent too. I spent like 25 minutes before lab started drawing this while using a picture on my cellphone as reference.

Why don't you ask them to derive energy conservation from the symmetries of the Lagrangian of the system a la Neother's theorem? That'll really show them the actual underlying principles.

Don't fault them mate, they're responsible for their grades. And if they don't think it's important then they'll be the ones suffering.
>>
>>118500570
I don't think industrial engineering students know what a Lagrangian is. This was a total beginner's simple mechanics experiment.
This reminds me though, a few weeks back I did get one lab report that mentioned that energy conservation arises from time translation symmetry. I was so impressed I gave them a few bonus points.

Teaching is both fun and awful.
But eh, what do I know, I'm only a grad student myself.
>>
>>118500476
Oh yeah, industrial engineering students are weaker than the classic engineering students as far as hard maths and physics go. I would know, I have an industrial engineering master's degree.

>Grad
Same here. In high energy.

Over the years I just feel like being someone who just relays information. This is fine with higher division courses, but it's better to be more engaging with freshmen.

Keep up the good fight, anon. Teaching isn't as easy as it looks.
>>
>>118500797
Oh, I'm aiming for the high energy department too. But my main field of interest is actually foundations (information, measurement, the nitty gritty of QM, etc).
I'm only a first year grad student though. Sometimes I'm horrified they let me teach anyone, but then again you don't have to be some kind of expert to show students how to pull a cart attached to a string.

>>118500817
Thank you.
>>
>>118497716
wonder how the fuck I turned into a cat
>>
>>118500646
I should add that symmetric/conserved pairs come in canonical pairs (i.e. time symmetry implies energy conservation, coordinate symmetry implies momentum conservation, field symmetry imply current conservation, etc.).
>>
>>118500923
I know that.I remember my analytic mechanics, and I'm knee-deep in QFT textbooks right now.
>>
>>118500903
That's a good one. Comes in useful in quantum computing and what not. I'm mainly interested in the very technical mathematical details (Wightman axioms/functions, non-perturbative quantization, Yang-Mills problem, etc.).

To be honest if you're a grad student you should be able to tutor at least introductory courses that specialize in your area (QM or otherwise). Also if you're familiar with a specific professor he can pull strings to let you tutor things in other departments (real analysis, for example).
>>
>>118501017
You sound like my brother. He finished a double bachelor is physics and math, and now he's working on his PHD in strings.

In my university they only let doctoral students TA (except in the lab), so this is all I have for now. Still, it's a good experience.
>>
>>118501106
I've known some cosmology folks (and dabbled a bit). They're all very patient and easy-going.

I suppose. But for grad students research > teaching, at least where I'm from.
>>
>>118501165
>research > teaching
Of course it is, but teaching is a good experience, plus it gives me a little extra cash. Also I haven't started any real research yet, I'm still working through the basic grad school courses and talking with professors, etc.
I-I'm just a beginner.

Anyway, we're veering way off topic here. Let's talk about Miyako and how she's the sunshine in Hidamari Sketch.
