1) Shinju-sama was protecting the earth for 298 years but couldn't do it "globally" any longer and had to invent a specialized Yuusha system which is more efficient.
2) Vertex started getting more fierce recently.
Might be both. The fact is, their near future looks terrible and there's nothing to make you think it would get better. See, there was two years break between Washio and Yuuna. Vertex were only chased off back then. Now they were utterly destroyed. Despite that, they have already mostly regenerated and there are billions of the mouth ones. Even if they continued to fight as Yuush it's likely they would be getting Forrestize warnings in decreasing time spans, to the point where they have no time to rest and it looks like such crisis might happen in a matter of days, weeks at best.

Sonoko had to mankai 21 times and she never killed a single vertex.
The yuusha-bu had to mankai 4 times to defeat 12.5 vertexes.
Now they are up against billions and billions of vertex, and one of their team members is the one who released them inside the barrier.
Even if these are weaker, they are rebuilding the strong ones outside. Assuming a rate of 1 mankai every 3 vertex approximately, they are utterly and absolutely fucked.
And even if they win, the reward they get is total locked-in syndrome they can never escape from and getting locked inside a creepy as hell chamber with no contact other than with spooky masked zealots.
