Scanning requires money and time. Using a flatbed scanner and swapping pages one by one is probably tedious and boring as hell.
>>
>>113291819
Redraws require some skill, too.

It's easier if you just tell yourself that you're providing HQ scans so that potentially thousands of readers can enjoy it. I keep the dust jackets, the rest goes in a drawer somewhere.

To the guy wanting to decrypt Comic Walker files from Android, I can officially say that it's not practical at all. They went out of their way to make it practically impossible for someone else to to come and figure it out. I looked into it quite a bit to see if it was actually feasible, but they've hidden it behind compiled object files and shared libraries and a bunch of data about your device in hard to distinguish manner. I know it uses AES, but what goes in as input is hard to know and I don't know if they have a straight implementation of t, or something hidden behind the compiled code.
>>
>>113292657
I don't see any of these yellow spots you're talking about.
>>
>>113296032
Is it possible to get the files the good ol' memory dumping way?
>>
>>113297045
I'm not sure what you mean by that.

I mean, I could probably write a patched version of the app which is simply cracked and either:
a. Sets the encryption variables to things I'll know.
b. Writes out the files somewhere else.
c. Writes out what the encryption variables are.

I imagine a. would be the better option. But I haven't done much stuff like this before. I've only patched something before but with a very well defined guide. This would simply be me writing in bytecode.
>>
>>113297229
http://forums.e-hentai.org/index.php?showtopic=92167

Take this DMM ripper for example, it determines where the decrypted images are stored in process' memory and dumps them while it's running. Of course this is kind of a lame way to un-DRM things but it works and is lossless.
>>
>>113298513
This would be on a mobile. I have no idea how different it is. I mean, there's already a way to rip them simply from the online interface. Seems like a lot more effort than it's worth.

You won't burn the book unless you put it in for like 60 seconds.

Put it in for like 15-30 until the cover starts opening up, then check it and microwave in 10-15 segments until it's hot enough to take stuff out.

NEVER leave it in long enough that the pages are curling in on themselves or turning brown.

tl;dr don't be stupid
>>
>>113304674
It always sucks to have someone doing it faster than you, but that's how it is. I've been on both ends of the issue. Sometimes it's worth doing the HQ if you know people will be reading it, and sometimes it's not, if you're driving yourself insane trying to keep up.

You don't hear fansubbers complaining that a shit group did it faster than them.

Then again, the people who download anime usually have a lot of options for groups and thus actually choose one over the other. Manga readers usually just go with whatever's fastest since they're not used to having to deal with choice.

It's really a pity.

If it's just typesetting you have to do, it's not too bad. If you have to go from raw scan to finished in three days, even if you don't have many or any redraws, you should probably leave this thread and get going.

Also, why does it have to be done in 3 days? Can't you delay a day or two? I'm not exactly in a group so I'm not used to having that kind of restriction.
>>

> What's taking so long?
Well, I like translating so I'm mostly translating stuff (I think I got about fifteen translated volumes of various series' I haven't even started cleaning yet). I like redrawing because it's challenging. Typesetting is simply boring to me. But now I'm going vigorously to finish it before anime adaptation starts since I'm going to be translating that, too. There are already two shit groups planning to translating it in my country and they will most likely drop it after a few episodes but I believe that Iwaaki deserves a decent translation.

Also, since I'm focusing on high-quality scanlation, I'm always waiting for volume scans but I'm struggling to find good raws for some projects I'm already releasing so I'm going to buy a scanner in a few months and going to get into scanning. Hopefully, it won't be too long since I will be able to scan Iwaaki's Black Jack manga. Since he's my favourite author and I love Tezuka.

I kind of wish we did this so I wouldn't spend time redrawing things that are just going to get covered up. But then again it gives the typesetter a bit more freedom in positioning things and choosing styles and such if you do the redrawing first, right? If I were doing a solo project, that's definitely how I would do it though. Too bad I don't speak moon.

You mean the blacks are overleveled?

The resolution is 1400 height, so I think it's from a pub raw. The ones that were being worked on before were from a french source with better scans.

IDK where the translator/scanner went, but we did finish chapter 4 and chapter 5 (pretty much.)
>>

I don't understand what you are getting at. The scanner was scanning his personal copy. It was a french source. He was scanning as we finished chapters, meaning he didn't scan the entire book. The scanner went MIA. Hence no complete french source scan. If there is a public scan of the french source, that's another story.

Make a video of a hard redraw or a typeset, then put it on your website along with the release.

4&5 did get translated and typeset (everything was done except a few sfx weren't set.) The problem is that the other person went MIA and I am not gonna release it on my own (also never had access to the blog he was running.)

The current releases are using the JP pub raw scans, which are 1400 height, but with a comic like cat soup, you're probably not losing that much.

I think it's just a situation where you're trying to fill in the gaps of why certain things weren't done and I'm not spending paragraphs explaining why.

After I cleaned up 4 and 5 the other person sent it to me typeset, but I didn't get back to them for a while since I got busy with other projects. When I did get back to them, they didn't respond (I guess they just stopped checking the email they had set up specifically for the project.) Though I have better scans of chapter 2-5, I'm not about to use the guys scans or release them on my own. Also if I wanted to translate it JP -> Eng I could do that myself.

>A lot of groups have dedicated redrawers now-a-days
Well I'm a newbie, but I came into this thinking cleaners didn't do redraws and I learned quickly that they do. I think it's important that people don't make that mistake because these past couple threads have undoubtedly piqued some people's interests in getting involved. If you want to clean you should be ready and willing to do redraws.

Thankfully I work on an easy series so there's nothing crazy, but it's still a challenge for me and I think it's a good first step before I think about trying to join a real group.
>>
>>113319729
Yea I totally agree, I was just pointing out that some people are led to believe that because a group has redrawers they don't have to do ANY redraws when they are only really around to do the really difficult redraws. I feel bad for our groups redrawer, despite the groups size we only have really have 1 guy who does them and people waste his time with such easy redraws.
>>
>>113319252
>develop those artistic skills.

Honestly it doesn't even feel like artistic skills. It's more like attention to detail and lots of free time. Most of it is already there for you and all you really need to do is fill in the blanks. Pen tool makes smooth curves because I can't. Clone stamp will fill in screentones.

You just need to dial it back. And maybe instead of just throwing Topaz at it, try doing some things manually first. A surface blur can help reduce noise.and make it easier to get your blacks black and whites white without having to level as much.
>>
>>113320264

Being 2 months behind on a monthly series that's in a magazine that's ending so there's going to be a gap in time before when it's possible to catch up isn't a big deal. Fallen Syndicate does a fine job on Dorohedoro and they don't even ask for donations on the chapters, only their site. If you're resorting to using GoogleTL then you're really not going to give the work a worthwhile representation. If you want to speed up the scans that badly, just go apply to help for the series and do it that way.

For today's topic I'd like to propose "Why the fuck are using so much different fonts despite the raw not having as much variety."
Really, why people use different font for shouts while in the raw it's the same dialogue font, just bold and big. Panel speaks for itself, you don't need any other shit you personally think is appropriate to stylize just to emphasize what's happening.
>>
>>113321228
Because while it may look fine in Japanese it doesn't look good in English, it's simple as that.
>>
>>113321268

>>
>>113321228
>>113321312
This was brought up earlier, there just aren't near as many Japanese fonts and the publishers probably don't care about it near as much as scanlators, so they just go with what works.
>Wild Words looks fine for 80% of dialogue.

>while in the raw it's the same dialogue font, just bold and big.

>>
>>113321774

>>113321864

>>
>>113321975

>>113321852
>I really wish people stopped forcing CC Astro City
It's a good font for dialogue in a very small number of cases, but otherwise I think it's pretty good for either thoughts, TL notes, or any translations of things for which you aren't going to remove the JP text and instead leave a note beside the panel (SFX and maybe some signs, for example).

>>113321622
>>113321774
I use different fonts for standard dialogue depending on the manga, of which Wild Words is usually tolerable, but often an inferior choice that can kill the atmosphere of a given work. Also, you need fonts for titles and fonts for shouts, both of which could vary depending on the manga and may even need different ones in the same manga. You'll also need fonts to fit certain styles, a few handwriting fonts, fonts for thoughts, narration, notes, etc
>>
>>113322425
Did you read what I posted?
>A font for shouts, a cutesy font, a font for cellphones/computers, a font for handwritten stuff, a scary font and use fitting fonts for stuff like titles and taglines and such.

I'll occasionally use a different shouting font if it's very clear in the raw that it's a different kind of shout than what I typically use, as for thoughts I just use Wild Words with italics.

>>
>>113322605
I probably should have stated my point more explicitly. The point is that the choice of font for standard dialogue or shouts or whatever can be dependent on the manga you're working on. The way you're getting around this is by using fairly nondescript fonts like Wild Words, but as I said, this just looks plain and can kill the atmosphere. Just pick a few fonts for a series before you start work on it and add more if you need them, but don't always fall back on the same few fonts.

They are for H-manga and Doujinshi, and the people that do take commissions do occasionally take on non-H stuff, which is helpful if there's no other way to get something you really want to read translated, though I don't want to go down that route.

Fansubs and Scanlations were born out of a "By the fans, for the fans" mentality, and I'd rather keep what I do in that same vein. I don't want to be a worker-for-hire, I just want to bring manga I enjoy by people I respect to a wider audience. I don't want to go on about buying licensed stuff and that sort of stuff, I just want to make manga accessible to fans. Yes, there are ungrateful, entitled faggots, but there are also grateful people who enjoy reading the manga and it's those who I bother putting in the effort for.

Not the kind that says, "WE NEED X AMOUNT OF $$$ TO KEEP THE SITE RUNNING GIB MONI PLS," but just something that's there for people who want to throw a dollar the scanlator's way? I kinda want to add one to mine, but there's some moral ambiguity to it that makes me question doing that.

I don't bother because my hosting's cheap enough, I have enough money to blow, and I'm not going to put myself in a position to be beholden to donators.
>>
>>113324207
As my post (>>113323720) indicates, you would imagine I'd have a hard time justifying a donation system, but I suppose if you work hard on it and feel like you could do with a sign of appreciation from the fans to get motivated, then I suppose it's okay. If it were me, though, I'd close donations once they reach a certain point (I don't mean to say you'd specify an exact amount required on the site, just when you feel you've received enough), say $100. That said, you'll probably get $20 max unless you say you need it to run the site or for raws or something, so do what you like.
>>
>>113324207
Just put up a small one like "if you want to help us buy raws you can donate", do be wary that if you do this people might start expecting more from you because they donated though.

So CC astrocity is shit.
What's a good font for basic bubbles?
>>
>>113325077
Depends on what sort of manga. Wild Words is good to have as a backup, but otherwise just check font guides and see what sort of font fits what you're doing. For example, I was working on something with a style that reminded me of some American comics recently, and for that I used CC Jim Lee. When I'm doing SoL stuff, I usually use fonts that have a lowercase as well because it usually fits the mood better.

The Japanese pub rip of the digital raw got shrunk down to around 185 mb (and slightly smaller, 1063 x 1539, maybe completely reencoded to jpg x%?), but I see that the ebook is listed at 600 some mb. I also saw that the pngs of the rip are in RGB rather than grayscale. Are they actually preserving those pages in the ebook format as RGB or is this something that happens with the ripping application and saving of the file? Just curious cause it seems like there's really no standard any of these publishers are adopting for digital release

If it's not the program that's extracting it and saving it as RGB png and the publishers are actually choosing to distribute it as RGB png vs Grayscale, I wonder what the Kodansha digital release guys are doing. Usually those guys care so much about keeping filesize down for mobile device ebooks... If they had these files as grayscale they could cut the file size by half for most of the images while losing none of the b/w. Or you could just use the extra space you'd save and boost the resolution (yes please.) The young animal digital releases are scaled to 1428 x 2000 with is pretty nice, but then you're reading young animal...

Yes, I realize it's more than twice the size but the tones have better aliasing and the white spots on blacks and other such imperfections should be fixed manually. That was my main issue, how the leveling and burning ruined some of the tones.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if someone says it looks the fucking same.

>>113328190
Topaz only works on "color" images, go to Images -> Image Mode -> set RGB
That should allow you to use it even if the page is gray.
>>
>>113327498

Continued...

Or maybe this is a difference in the ebooksjapan version vs other online retailers. I see that amazon's kindle version is like 170 some mb which matches up to the size of the jp pub raw release. I wouldn't be surprised if the resolutions/format matched up.

Sorta weird to see so much variation in the image by online digital distributor rather than based on publisher standard.
>>
>>113328347

Yeah, for some reason quality variation affects both English and Japanese digital distribution. Viz is an easy example of that.
>>
>>113328298
Well I definitely see the difference but as a cleaner I always see that shit. To the average reader, there is almost no difference between those two images.
>>
>>113328406
>Viz is an easy example of that

>>
>>113328476

Their Amazon rips and Viz store rips are worlds apart. Amazon is better for some reason.
>>
>>113316662
If all they wanted was bring manga to the readers, they wouldn't care about credits and shit. I'm a translator myself and I'm almost happy about online readers because most people read manga on them. When the manga I translated is on online readers, it gets read by a lot more people than when I release it on some obscure website.

>>
>>113328556
Kill yourself, we don't need anyone with access to that trip.
>>
>>113328565
The primary thing is that a lot of times when you have gradient tones like that and you use a filter to remove the noise, it thinks the fainter parts of the gradient are just noise and removes them. It's very noticeable at least to me on the top part of that image. Instead of the faintest part of the gradient, it's just black.
>>
>>113328654
There's also the other tones in the gray areas where in the anon's version they're round whereas the release one they're more jagged and sharper.
>>
>>113328654
Going back and forth between the two, one is a lot sharper and creates this yellow light effect between the white on black screentones to the sides.
>>
>>113328565

Yeah, the tones got completely messed up in some areas. It's also not really a great idea to use as a point of reference whether or not you can see a difference. Most people aren't going to be comparing, so it's more important to preserve image accuracy.
>>
>>113328716
Yeah I see that now too and a couple other things thanks to the screenshot comparison posted. Personally I have no idea how to avoid doing that without just avoiding filters entirely and trying to do everything manually. If it were me I would just hate myself for "ruining" them and send it off to the editor anyway. The thing is though, we're usually the only people who actually care. Readers just want the new chapter ASAP.

You can try jdownloader, it's works with MangaStream too.
Link http://jdownloader.org/
>>
>>113327802
It's because the source images are jigsaw'd. There's no choice but to redraw them as png, lest you want to lose any quality. There are ways to rearrange the jpeg losslessly, but they're not very convenient and are entirely dependent on how they were constructed. You also can't tell the difference between a grayscale image and a colored one from just the original jpeg.

>>113328503
Kobo is arguably better. Joins are better on Viz, so apparently that's priority for some people.

>>113329656
I should add. It's quite possible that there are images that are not jigsaw'd somewhere and that those are usually accessed by mobile devices. I was planning on doing the first volume only, and releasing as a batch, but I don't want to create confusion. Welp. I suppose if they go through all the way
>>
>>113339733

Doesn't really matter, if you want to release a better-looking version, go for it (or even volunteer to do editing for them).
>>
>>113339533
Do you have to flatten the levels into the layer once you get it right at the higher resolution before resizing it smaller again?
>>
>>113339595
There's a draw back to this, though.
Some screens and patterns require selective leveling. And in order to do this you much merge the leveling layer before you down scale.
>>
>>113339808
Are you using an adjustment layer? Yes, you need to merge it. It's better to just not use those though.
>>
>>113339835
Yes, and? I level on the page, I only use levels layer on color pages.
>>
>>113339856
Not him, but
>tfw I use adjustment layers since I'm bad and need to check if I overleveled repeatedly
It's fine as long as I flatten after all's said and done, right?
>>
>>113339948
Well, the thing about levels is that settings at one size will affect pages at a different size so unless you merge before resizing to final release size you're going to have to adjust them anyways.
>>
>>113339948
Yeah, it's the same end result if you flatten. I just avoid using adjustment layers because I will never, ever remember that until I've done a ton of other stuff that I now have to redo.
>>
>>113339856
Why? I didn't even know there was any other way to do it.

>>113339948
Yeah I like that convenience.

Fun fact:
For pages like this, I just do a shoddy clean with the clone stamp, and then position the text so it covers everything so it's not noticeable.

On a sidenote, I am also against having to warp the text like that to fit the ~~~~!?, which in my opinion doesn't belong since it's more of a "Japanese writing" thing. I'd just use a !? and be done with it. The exceptions are singluar tildes used for lilting or curling voices of ara ara and/or smug drill bitches, etc.
>muh-standards.jpeg

Also I always get lost with what to do with vertical text like that. Typesetting it horizontally will in no doubt result in either a lot of hyphens, or having to warp it, so vertical text becomes the solution, yet at the same time, sometimes you have to sacrifice some readability if the line's long enough.
>>
>>113340338
Or you could rotate the text. Not ideal, but it covers the most of the Japanese and saves you from hyphens.
>>
>>113340338
>On a sidenote, I am also against having to warp the text like that to fit the ~~~~!?, which in my opinion doesn't belong since it's more of a "Japanese writing" thing. I'd just use a !? and be done with it.
I'm glad the TLer I work with drops those and replaces them with just !?
Makes things easier on me and gives me more liberty when editing.

>>
>>113340398
I'll consider this, actually. For longer sentences, it's a bit of a pain, and you'll instinctively want to crane your neck, but for shorter things it might work well.

Either way, sacrificing some readability, just have to figure out in the context which one loses the least meaning while still maintaining some sort of consistency.

How do you rip stuff from EBJ? Do you actually unpack the images, or just screencap every page?
>>
I'm going to run batch script to turn RGB rips from last Afternoon magazine into grayscale ones with 128 colors (yes, I know it'll bloat the shit out of it, but I just checked random page and I kept seeing noticeable changes on screentone till 128, so here goes that). I can upload it if anyone interested, should save around 500MB.

Is -obtaining- PS C$4 from TPB still the best way to go about it?

And would do me a favor and link the public raw whatever site? I never saved it before and want to at least do /a/non TLs if I'm too lazy to get CS4 working on my new computer.
>>
>>113341010

Try Googling "manga download raw".
>>
>>113341010
I'm not much of an editor, but I just downloaded CS2 directly from Adobe's site. What stuff does the newer versions have anyways?
>>
>>113341010
>CS4
Why the fuck would you use CS4 when CS6 exists? CS4 doesn't even have content-aware fill since that was added in CS5.
>>
>>113341021
Yeah, probably. Thinking about it, I feel like there wasn't a noticeable difference between CS4 and CS5, but one in between CS4/CS5 and CS6. I'm probably delusional, though.

>>113341049
Mostly convenience and some performance boosts iirc.
>>
>>113341010
You can grab their CC version too, heck there's even a portable version of that (as well as any other PS released of coruse)
>>
>>113341079
>CS4 doesn't even have content-aware
I've never managed to have that actually help me. It either looks ugly as shit or the redraw I'd use it for would be stupidly easy to do in the first place.
>>
>>113341151
That's because you're trying to make it do everything you lazy shit, it best works in small selections with patterns.

CS4 is the one I learned cleaning/typesetting with, so I wanted to use something I'm familiar with.

Nothing I plan on working on has redraws worth worrying over CAF about. 'cause my Japanese is hella bad for having studied 5 years
>>
Finished scanning Keyman v5. This is a fun volume. I hope that the handful of readers on /a/ enjoy it.
>>
>>113341229

Excnn is one of my favorite raw sites. I hope they survive. Hideous layout though.
>>
>>113341293
A lot of things have been improved, I really don't see how learning to clean in CS4 would make much of a difference in cleaning in the latest version. I started with CS3 and shit only got better as I pirated a newer version when they came out.

>>113341326

Hipsters will tell you that using curve will be better but the truth is that curves isn't for leveling, it helps mainly as a way to make using the leveling tool with lower settings.

I should've set it to grayscale, it pasted as RGB and I was lazy. I usually don't bother with nondestructive techniques while leveling.

The guy that I check for doesn't really keep up with the translating, he just posts a script every once in a while. If I was to work on my own chapters there'd be nobody to run them by since Ika doesn't have anybody else.

While we're discussing Ika, what is the general consensus on squid puns in translation?

Or just live in an area with lots of Japanese. A good number of new and used Japanese bookstores where I'm at. Don't even have to pay shipping.
>>
>>113344601
I buy all my Jap tanks at Book-Off in southern California. There are others across the US, but there're three or four that I can pick from given my location. It's never guaranteed that you'll find what you're looking for, but paying $1 for tank raws is pretty great.

Alternatives are your standard stores though, like Sanseido and Kinokuniya. The only problem with these is that prices are essentially doubled. It might be fine if you need to do a rush job on something and are willing to pay, but I'd say that you're better off biting the shipping bullet and buying online in bulk.
