You don't know Annie, do you? Half of everything she did was just her consciously shooting herself in the foot.

It all boils down to perceptiveness and strategic skill. Armin excels at both and it's obvious to absolutely everyone around him, especially other smart people. Annie did not need to know him personally to realize that, spending time around him as trainees and participating in his plans was more than enough.

That’s a dream Erwin had shortly after he became commander. A dream left a deep impression in his memory.
