I felt the need to compile this list to teach the younger generations about the GOAT groups, since soon all we will be left with are HorribleSubs, Commies and other "groups" who do the same as HorribleSubs and Commie.
HERE WE GO
5. [Frostii] / [Ureshii] / [F-B]
Professionals always do a better job than fansubbers these days. There's no reason to continue bothering with fansubs unless you want to watch a show that's not being handled by a western company (those are becoming less common).
My face when Live-Evil took eons to release Shion subs
They throw a few million at the the Japanese studio. But together a dub cast from a pool of 15 people and sell them for 30 bucks
Or in CR. Idiots pay what ever few they charge. Probably rack in a few million with add money for gravy
the sheer number and selection of shows they subbed, the influence and power they had over the scene and fansubbing for years to come makes up for the fact that their subs were sometimes subpar or meme/trollsubs. however, they pretty much introduced the whole concept of trollsubs together with coalguys.
"professionals", especially those in crunchyroll or funimation subbing, were often longtime fansubbers. however, they only do it for the money now, they don't get e-peen for it if they work for crunchyroll. this means that they don't pour their heart and soul into it anymore, which makes the subs suck hard. back then lots of them started out for ideological reasons and the love of the medium itself.
and that's only for the translators.
typesetting/encoding/nonexistent karoke of "professional" subs is still stuck in the 90s.
>CR devs suggesting you watch anime from people who rip off CR devs
>this means that they don't pour their heart and soul into it anymore, which makes the subs suck hard
You're full of shit and don't understand what subtitles should be. I don't want distracting flashy shit that some American slapped on to be cool for his friends, I want an accurate interpretation of what the actual staff of the anime intended. Professionals have been doing this better lately.
>an accurate interpretation of what the actual staff of the anime intended.
This is exactly what the top 6 of the OP post did for many years, and this is what I was talking about.
>I want an accurate interpretation of what the actual staff of the anime intended.
>Professionals have been doing this better lately.
I wish Commie was faster with Jojo, I'm sick of Centerfold and Soul Sacrifice. CR will probably change Oingo Boingo too, those fucks.
Best TL quality on average tier:
CrunchyRoll and other official translations
Overrated mediocrity tier:
Too old-fashioned for their own good / ENTERPRISE FANSUBBER / fucking slow tier:
Automated ripping script tier:
For the good to decent groups, quality can vary between projects due to differences in staff members.
>So, uh, I'm too busy with life and school so I don't have time to sub anything. Besides, CR and Funi are just as good. So yeah, and thanks for the donations!
Fuck this. Time to learn moon.
If you read the post He specifically mentions that there is a large sum of money left that he will use for some server costs elsewhere, but then has a fuzzy explanation as to the plans of what to do with the rest of the money. He even went out of the way to say it was likely he would be accused of taking the money.
He probably took the money and ran with it since he made it clear he felt he would be accused of doing it anyway.
I can hardly blame him. I'd probably do the same. It's people's own fault for trusting someone they don't know enough to give him money without him being obliged to tell anyone what it'll be used for.
Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for anyone dumb enough to donate to a subgroup. Even groups with decent notoriety are prone to dropping shows or delaying them indefinitely, and they don't even give the slightest of fucks.
there is high possiblity that everything of this UTW blog post is made up, basically a scheme to get empathy from people who donated so he can keep the money. the guy is behind 7 proxies, noone knows his real name or face.
>"N-no you see, they don't a-always trollsub, only sometimes, that is ok!"
Fuck off, one drop rule. A good translation group doesn't trollsub.
Also gg trollsubs fucking harder than commie.
only autismal weeaboos care about that stupid shit though. all DVD/BD relesases of any medium or cinematic releases in foreign territories have been subbed using a simple white font with a black outline for decades.
Only a true MAL-level weeb would complain that the subs got easier to read because the "soulless professional subber" didn't choose a cute moeblob font and outline all texts with the color of the best girl's eyes
>Mazui and gg above UTW.
Well this thread is confirmed awful.
Chihiro have been great. They were the only group that didn't localize Nourin to hell.
Must be sad not being able to use the best sub group for some shows because you have PTSD from downloading trollsubs.
Different translators and different staff for different shows. Lumping all shows/trolls under the same sub group and using that as your basis for ignoring them is like refusing to get taught by a black professor in college because of the dirty black hobo that freaked you out in the city.
Why does everyone give Doki so much shit?
How you faggots put up with subs that spontaneously apply southern accents and use needlessly quirky phrases like "mash lips" and "donut her banana" while Doki are willing to, and generally will already have subbed the show properly the day before is just dumb. I've heard their encodes are banded, but I'd rather look at a jaggies on a background than a flashing Sonic the Hedgehog reference on the bottom of the screen. Is it tradition, or is /a/ just fucking retarded.
Doki aren't banded. Their encodes are fine. The issue is that they used to add TL notes which have given them a bad reputation. Fitting in with /a/ is more important than being able to watch a show without Kanye West references and the "donut her banana" you mentioned breaking immersion.
>There are people that wait for specific subs instead of downloading the first one that shows up
as far as i saw they have good releases, video quality are comparable to many of the other big groups, and translation was good with minimal localization along with including honorifics. Their BD releases are also pretty solid.
Stop being stuck in the past, Doki translations have been good for years now, the only reason everyone shits on them is because nyaa still hates them.
I'll never forget that day when they just suddenly stopped.
I still wonder what happened to them
He's right you know.
Commie will just change his name to Barrelroll'd or something. Do you really believe they will refrain from adding "unique touches" to the script because no-one else is subbing it?
>to teach the younger generations
I've got a better method.
It's called 'lurk the fuck moar faggot'
Elysium is/was one of the worst BD groups when it comes to video quality. They used terrible shareraws and then re-encoded those for some of their releases and even when they encoded straight from the BD the quality wasn't that great.
They are slightly better now. I used to only use them or Coalgirls for archiving but now every major subgroup releases BD versions too so there's a lot more variety. [niizk] still best choice for old/sd anime.
>remembers when the only way to get Sailor Moon subbed was with VKLL fansubbed tapes
>OF ALL TIME
>No mention of [KAA]
What are you, 12? [KAA] is legendary.
This is actually pretty accurate, as long as by good/okay/decent you mean that they at least got the meaning of what they were translating right.
Most people here don't even know Japanese, so they base their comments on whether the subs "looks good" or not in English and drama and that would obviously produce a very different list.
Normally I'd agree with you, but in the case of an utterly incomprehensible title written in a made-up language I think it's more than appropriate.
And it shows how much they care about their work, which is what I was getting at.
>The official TL is the only one with memespouting
Horriblesubs has shit quality video, but at least they don't use TL notes and try to act funny.
I rather just download HS than research if a subber is a 4chan-browsing funnyguy or not.
They brought this on themselves.
>last week was 500 trillion years ago
I distinctly remember that fucker from the Strike Witches film BDs.
>uses the EXACT same subs as Underwater
>double the size of Underwater at not even better quality
And the stinger:
>BakaBT accepts Coalgirls over Underwater
>people defending trollsubs
Sounds like bullshit to me, considering 8th was moving to China for a full-time job a while back, and as far as translation jobs go, he should be able to get much better-paying gigs than working for CR.
It was really weird and was open to a lot of speculation. Some people try to swear that it's not over yet because nobody can figure out exactly what happened and they think there's more clues to find. It's really Umineko-tier with all the theories different people are still writing up.
