1. We've got a pretty good fossil record, showing no examples of creatures capable enough to build civilisations until, at the very most, half a million years ago.

I never said anything about a completely different race of elves I said whether or not pointed ears could have been a trait passed down from the neanderthal or other subhumans.
There might have been tribes of people who still contained a more prominent amount of neanderthal dna of mabe 20 to 50 percent living in more modern times.
If they found a skeleton it would be viewed as a different race and the ear cartilage would be completely wasted away so it would just be another skeleton.

I'm from the north of Germany and here we have tons of old tales that tell of "pointy eared" (Spitzohr) people who live in the woods and traded with humans. Apparently they were shorter than us with a fragile appearance. Some of their tribes also allied with German tribes to fend off the Romans. There's actually a myth about why the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest ended in a disaster for the Romans: The forest used to be home to one of the most aggressive Spitzohr tribes.
