Use the contemporary English version for your bible. It was written for prisoners to understand so it's pretty clear and for a good job of dodging the thous and thees.

Make sure you check out Jewish mysticism and the first few chapters of Enoch.

The Popol Vuh isn't really a sacred text. It was written by a Fray in the 18th century or so. It's supposedly a collection of legends and whatnot, but it's not. "Mayan" (that is, indigenous shits who call themselves mayan even though the Mayas got extinct centuries before the discovery of america) don't use it in their "mayan rituals" - those are more like santeria.

I do like some of the tenets, but LaVey had his own life experience and didn't take into consideration other people's lives. I don't consider it a religious text as much as a glorified essay.

Use Sacred-Texts like mentioned, and you can find everything, but don't forget the Gnostic texts, Conversations with God by Neal Donald Walsh, The Alchemist by Paulo Cuoleo (Or whatever), and Kabballah, among other things.

contains a treatise on all of the major world religions and their philosophies.

all the other content aside, it does an effective comparison of all of these religions

that is such a boring book. the only good part was ramayana's brother that went with him talking about how you should always ignore women because they are foolish (i forgot exactly what he said cause I read it a year or two ago). I do not recommend reading Ramayana and would instead read the stuff like That Thou Art and Bhagavad Gita.

It is a good goal. Reading vedic, taoist, buddhist texts helped me understand Jesus in profound way after having read the Bible and going to church (in fairness I never made it a very good habit of going).

ok. well i think OP has the right idea. IMHO it is good to study as many religious and philosophies as one can, if so inclined towards these things.
i think it is important to have a perspective of the varities in each of them, as well as the similarities. I myself have more or less been trying for many years to do what OP is proposing here. it is obviously time consuming and takes great energy and focus to glean anything from it all.
my idea was to look at them all objectively, rather than becoming immersed in the acceptance of any one of them as the one truth.
it does make for an interesting study.

Get a kindle - many classical books come free on kindle and this applies to the holy books too (I got a free copy of Bible and Quran on mine).

Also, get Nag Hammadi library. It's the single most enlightening religious text (or rather a collection of texts) I've ever read.

OP here. First there are a few superficial reasons. I like the mythology and I think it'd be a cool collection of books to have. Sure, everyone has a Bible, or a Koran, or a religious text of some kind, but who has over a dozen of them?

Onto the deeper reason; I personally believe that none of these books are true. I think that they are simply a different perspective on the world. While reading, I'd like to change my perspective just to see what it's like. While reading the Bible, maybe, "Yeah, I can see why people would believe this. I could even see why some people would go out and protest funerals."

Other than that, I just want to. I always thought religion was pretty interesting, but I never took the time to read up on any of it.
