In 2016, Lette underwent a lot of medical procedures once her husband discovered to what degree her health had been neglected. Lette asked me at one point to drive her to her dentist for a wisdom tooth extraction. Aside from being surprised at Lette being nearly 30 and still having her wisdom teeth, I was totally okay with it. The thought of undergoing the procedure seemed to frighten her, though, and she couldn't hold on to any one topic of conversation for long.

She started telling me, unexpectedly, about interactions with her mother I had never known about. She told me about the punishments she'd been given for flouting her curfew, which she'd done a few times with me.

There was a room in the attic, she said, where they kept all the old things of her grandmother's. She had gotten trapped in at one point, and was only retrieved when someone had heard her screaming. Anytime after this, her mother had always threatened her with the room if she were bad. Eventually, she actually started locking Lette into the room.

Lette told me, just as we parked at the dentist's office, that her grandmother still lived in the room. She said everyone had thought her grandmother had committed suicide years ago. Lette had attended the ash scattering herself. But when they had come home, she had seen her grandmother crouching naked on the roof. She said when her grandmother had seen Lette notice her, she put a finger to her lips, and crawled into the window of the attic.

When Lette had run up to the attic, she saw bottles of vodka, syringes and needles, and cigarette butts scattered in the hallway and long gouges in the wallpaper along the floor. The door to the attic, which had always been locked in her memory, was ajar just a few inches. When she stepped toward the door, it was as though she had stepped into a plume of smoke from a garbage fire. The smell and heat swirling around her were incredibly awful. She thought it had only lasted an instant, but when she broke free the hallway was illuminated only by the light from the moon outside. Her grandmother's ash scattering had been in the late morning, and none of her family had noticed or cared that she'd been missing all day.

It was only when she descended the rickety staircase that she realized her body stung all over. When she looked at herself in the second story bathroom light, long, deep scratches had been drawn all over her body.

Her mother hadn't believed Lette when she told her about what she'd experienced. She blamed Lette for inflicting the wounds on herself and the trash in the third floor. And she did notice the curious, soporific effect the third floor had on her daughter. So whenever Lette became too independent or "smart", her mother would send her to the third floor for "cleaning."

The scars from those visits are still on her arms and legs today.
