You are being woken up by something in your environment at awkward times and so subtly that you can be conscious before your body can move. You are still dreaming, so your mind fabricates an explanation for not being able to move. Look up, "the hum." It is a significant factor these days.

The dream part works the same way that most common dream phenomena do. We try to do something, our body gives feedback that doesn't make sense for the action and the dream works out a why. So you end up weak, unable to punch or run. If you can't breath, you dream something choking you, if you can't get up, you dream something holding you down. You try to eat something, but your mouth can't find the food, so it decides that your teeth must have broken out. Etc etc etc.

Work in lucid dreaming at least we'll enough to learn to nope out of dreams, and it lends itself well to managing sleep paralysis. I only had it once, but knew enough about it to go meh, and will myself awake. Helps that I'm not afraid of ghosts, demons or monsters, so all I saw choking me was a roommate I was scared was capable of petty and rash murder.

Watches can stop intermittantly when the battery gets low. Mine does that shit about a month before it's time for a new battery. Lots of clocks can fuck up too. My alarm clock likes to drop back 25 minutes over a couple weeks every time I reset it, has done that shit for 10 years and I just use my phone now.

Even more fucked up, they are experiments in cloning and genetic alteration, released back into environments, to see if they can/will once again find their place within those environments. There are feral thylacine out there, but they were conceived in a lab, and brought to maturity if closed off research facilities hidden as nature preserves.

Why?

Because it answers a lot of questions for our overlords. Like can and will cloning and artificial wombs allow them to repopulate the wild life of the Earth if say a killer virus got out of their control? Or is a few culling thermal nuclear devices were used on the inconveniently large human populations of the world who will soon be replaced with A.I. and automation. What better experiment to try and understand if science can allow some to pause the game of natural selection, and try and engineer ecospheres to their needs after destroying the ecosphere, than by first seeing if a recently extinct animal can be re-introduced to an environment again, and survive.
