What makes Cthulhu(or other Lovecraft stories/ creatures) supposed to be scary?

Why is he called the king of horror?

Why would seeing a giant with an octopus head make the average person go completely insane, and some people just drop dead from the mere sight of him?

I've read a great amount of Lovecraft and like his stories but I'm not scared by them. I'm just wondering what makes them scary to some.

He just sets a unique tone that sings to some people.

The point of it is not the monster itself, the whole point is existential confusion/horror and the shattering of the average person's foundational belief system.

The giant monster is not required. If people see something they know to be completely impossible, and it persists for more than a few seconds, and other people see it as well, it reduces them to a state of shock and damages the way they have preconceived the world on a daily basis for their entire lives. Always having faith and trust in certain truths that are now broken. Things they never questioned at all. Or even thought about. But now suddenly maybe up is actually down, or everything they know is a lie. Maybe it was all a sham and they never had a clue what was really happening in this thing we call life.

Thing is, they were written back when men really felt on top of the universe. God's special creature, made in his image, inheritors of the earth, etc., etc. And really this 'existential horror' was all about entertaining the idea that that wasn't true. At the time.

Well, it still isn't true, and we still see ourselves as one and all 'special snowflakes' in one way or another. Just the variety of flavors have broadened.

It's just a run of the mill planet in a run of the mill galaxy in a run of the mill universe way far down in the pecking order of this local mathematical multiverse, let alone all of existence.

Existences far greater than anything we in this universe can ever know, by its very design, still don't know everything.

Even the 'giant monster' in the story barely even rates as different from an average human in the grand scheme of things.

Lovecraft isn't considered horror because the monsters are strange and the situations are unusual. The stories don't "shatter foundational belief systems." Foundational isn't even a word.

For example, in that story with the guy who got stuck in a crypt while he was stacking coffins.. There's literally nothing that challenges any form of belief structure. He just uses fear of the dark and confined and unknown to cultivate a sense of panic.

>>16942274
It's supernatural / psychological horror. The idea is that he's relating how fucking terrified these normal people would be in ridiculous situations. Like in the one with the guy in the lifeboat who fell into that weird dimension and went totally insane about it. Maybe reading about some guy discovering a plane of black squishy substance, a giant strange monolith, and a gigantic creature which defies description doesn't terrify YOU -- but that protagonist would've been shitting bricks.

It's meant to be a mindfuck -- which is created using your basic fears. The unknown, the incomprehensible, the dark, confined spaces, giant weird shit, or as a specific theme, the fear of going insane.

My thought before this thread starts, is there really a difference between lucid dreaming and astral projection? Is LD just another name for AP? Or is it some beginning, amatuer stage of AP?

it's actually quite easy
get into a habit of recalling your dreams the INSTANT you wake up, writing them down is good, no matter how silly it seems.
before you sleep, tell yourself "tonight, i will lucid dream". even if you don't, don't get disappointed. just keep doing this- these two steps can help you in the beginning.

>My thought before this thread starts, is there really a difference between lucid dreaming and astral projection? Is LD just another name for AP? Or is it some beginning, amatuer stage of AP?

If AP was real then people could quite easily prove it with the differing object in the adjacent room experiment, which has failed every time. That said lucid dreaming is worth working towards, you can have some great times with it, nothing beats flying.

I had a strange experience this morning, in fact..

I had retained consciousness during a dream where I immediately cleared a room with people.
Suddenly I was alone, thinking that I could do whatever but I couldn't do anything at all. I expected to be able to have some magnificent powers. I then opened a door to the outside world, where it was night despite anticipating day time. I woke up full of bruises.

Welcome to the Left-Hand Path General!

It won't be a part of Occultism & Magick General because of many reasons, but mostly because LHP is not just about the "occult" and "magic(k)" - it's a philosophy and a way of life.

I think it's not the first Left-Hand Path General, but I've never actually seen one, so that's why I started this now.

We can discuss here anything LHP-related: Satanism, curses, philosophy, occult and esoteric methods and yes, even sp00ky things.

Please don't post anything off-topic, like "Jesus will save you!", "Wow, so edgy" or "You are all role-players"!

While the LHP is egocentric and selfish, please try to remain polite and civil!

Question: why do many LHP-practitioner hate anti-cosmic Satanists?

I checked Temple of the Black Light and they have some very interesting ideas.

Also: any non-LaVeyan Satanists here?

I'm not an atheist (can't even understand how could be this atheist-theist war on 4chan so violent these days), more like a simple occultist, and LaVeyan Satanism seems to be more like a philosophical system than an occult one.

And the LHP is an occult AND a mundane thing, for me.

While spiritual Satanism sounds good, many branches are just ex-New Age groups, with all their Kundalinis and chakras.
>>
>>16942208
So... Just out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference between different kinds of Satanism anyway? I didn't even know there was more than one kind actually.

What would make one decide to become a Satanist?

I know these are general questions, but I never had the chance to ask someone these things before.

What's the spookiest thing thats ever happened to you

>watching fathers house for 3months while he's out of the country
>warned me of trespassers or hunters on his property he said he sees in the woods occasionally
>Kinda think that's strange given the remoteness
>2 weeks into house sitting smoking outside and see a flash light light for about 10 seconds
>11pm
>hear loud crunching
>go inside and get a rifle from his room and my dog
>see the light again for 3 or 5 seconds a few minutes later
>try to hype up my dog to look
>dog is completely calm like we're alone
>go inside and 2 hours later see a bright light shine into a kitchen window like point blank
>run outside to the window I saw it
>nothing
>think there is someone near by so tired 3 rounds into the grass
>sleep with rifle and revolver the rest of the night
>tell dad the next day and he says he sees that too sometimes
>never saw it again in those last months
>a month later going to his house late at night and see the flash light again on the dirt driveway

Not sure what to make of it

My father thinks it's a trespasser but his house is very remote and has never been broken into or anything

It was a bright white light like a flash light. Not like those ghost lights or swamp gas.

Makes me worry about my dad living alone. Especially if this is a person and not paranormal. If me shooting a rifle into the ground didn't scare them away and seeing the flash light after that incident concerns me a great deal

I think I need to talk about this. I can't even sleep right now because some freaky shit is happening since a Halloween party that happened recently. I think I have some sort of spirit/entity thing following me around and I am not sure what it wants. They seem pretty gentle for the most part, but I don’t think they left my side a single time since I first spoke to it. Now to begin the story. Ok, so obviously this started at a Halloween party like I mentioned before. Me and my friends were bored so we wanted to mess around with some shit. One thing we played was an older Ouija board one of them brought over. Truthfully, none of us believed in any of this stuff, but slowly I think I am becoming convinced something has to be out there, otherwise I wouldn’t be having these experiences, or I am losing my fucking mind! Moving along... We played with the thing for a good while until we felt like we contacted something. After a bit of research we learned a little about whatever it was. I obviously thought one of my friends was just pranking us by moving the planchette around and pretending to be surprised along with us. While I was thinking to myself about bout how retarded this was I kind of mentally asked it to do something as like ultimate proof to myself that one of my friends was messing with the rest of us. I remembered asking for it to spell out a number I thought up. Before the next question could even be asked by anyone else the Planchette spelled out the number four with letters. My face went white and I jumped back from the game a bit with widened eyes. Obviously my friends were confused as hell from the sudden reaction. They questioned why the thing was spelling out random numbers before anyone could ask anything.

Damn, this story is already getting sorta long. I will try to summarize with less words. Ultimately I continued the game and mentally convinced myself that it was really nothing paranormal, but I was uneasy the entire time. Things came to a close and we all left to go home. That night I could not sleep too well. It felt like something was in the room with me, lurking in the darkness. Next night was even worse, I was psyching myself out because I could swear I was feeling light touches of something along certain parts of my body. It felt like I was caressed with energy at times, but it felt like the energy had some sort of physical form. It is actually a pleasant feeling if you ignore the whole scared shitless component. From then on I started having dreams at night that centered around this strange figure. An indefinable human form that sometimes glows, and sometimes approaches me in a very calming way. I wake up from them most times, but they aren’t horribly scary or anything. These dreams are extremely vivid, but its always some sort of gender neutral being visiting. Despite the lack of detail the being itself is actually very pretty, or rather the way it glows, and the surreal nature is the beautiful thing. I talked to my friends after to see if they had been experiencing anything, but none of them besides me has this weird attachment going on. At first it started out very gentle, but over the course of the week it became more real, and weirdly enough it does not seem to want to hurt me, but I think it might be in love with me. Before I noped the fuck up and began writing this I could swear I felt some sort of energy touching my lips, like a small kiss or something. Even now I can sort of feel it around me. It has me a little unnerved.
>>
>>16941382
K, that is my story more or less. I probably forgot some details, but I will fill them in when they come to mind. Anyone know anything about this?
>>
Seduction is an ancient ploy, OP. It would be unwise to welcome or enjoy the "touches".
I advise you to rebuke it, ask for forgiveness from God, and never do stupid shit like trying to speak to entities that you have no business speaking with.

Is this really what we've become, /x/?

The Grifter video is dead. I killed it in my basement. I used the kind of wire you pick up in an Autozone to cut through the plastic of the VHS and then I rubbed my super-charged magnet all over that tape. I enjoyed it. Then I cut to other scenes of past VHS magnitizations, but only for the briefest second while I ambled down my hall of abused VHSs. Then I split open my own header for my VCR and everything went white, then red, then black.

It was trippy.

Hello /x/. I have never posted but lurked on this board for the past 2 months or so. I find the paranormal world fasincating and very real but I am a skeptic. This past thursday I am living with my brother hanging out in my house. Anyway we have these dolls (ones in the picture) that my dad bought from a lady with cancer to help her with the bills. They came here around october 30st and I still have them. Yet my house gets creepier everyday with them. Doors are locking in the bathrooms but everything left the same. My cats are scared of going in the same room with them and my dog who is an australian shepard lab mix that weighs 120lbs is scared of them. My guitar amps turn on randomly, I hear my guitar being softly played as well. Do you think the bad vibes from the cancer lady transfered to the dolls?
