This was always one of my favorite unexplained mysteries, just for the wierdness factor alone.

Someone reported that they reappeared in 2009, but this account is flimsier than the original.

I've heard of the same phenomenon happening in other places and times as well, I'll see if I can dig anything up.

You're saying that it is impossible to create a simulation advanced enough to be confused with the real universe by the people inside.

Most computer scientists believe that we ourselves will achieve this within 30 years, some say within the next 500.

Now think universally to species that could be thousands to millions of years more advanced than we are. And this is highly likely.

It seems like you could work out whether it's more likely that we've already done it and we're in it or more likely that we've yet to do it. Each of those would have a statistical probability and one would come out on top. I don't know how to calculate statistical probability, though.

This man, Billy Smolinski, went missing from a city in Connecticut not too far from where I live. In 2004, he left for work and was never seen again, leaving behind his ex-girlfriend and kids.

Ms. L insisted to the medical staff at a New York City hospital that she had no heartbeat because she was dead. She told them that she was rotting and that she smelled like a decomposing cadaver. She claimed that blood had stopped flowing through her veins sb10064839t-002and that she couldn’t understand why she hadn’t been buried. The 53 year-old Filipino woman told them that she wanted to be taken to the morgue instead of the emergency room, so that she could be with the other corpses.

Like Ms. L, there haven dozens of documented cases where a person believes that they’ve died and exist in some form of rotting agony. It’s called Cotard’s syndrome and it’s one of the strangest delusions we’ve ever seen. The bizarre syndrome was first described by Dr. Jules Cotard in 1882. According to it’s definition: Cotard’s syndrome comprises any one of a series of delusions that range from a belief that one has lost organs, blood, or body parts to insisting that one has lost one’s soul or is dead.

Eventually the psychiatrist found out that Ms. L had been previously diagnosed as suffering from depression. She was prescribed anti-depressants in the Philippines, one month before moving to NYC. After a few months on medication and therapy, Ms. L showed signs of improvement. Her delusions subsided.

Cotard’s syndrome or Walking Corpse Syndrome. What is this strange delusion that makes ordinary people think they’re dead and decomposing?
The syndrome was named after the French neurologist who had given it the name “Negation delirium” because of his observations of a patient negating her body food and water. The patient known as Mademoiselle X.

Ms. X was a severely depressed and a self-loathing young woman who believed that she had died because she was missing some internal organs. She complained about her rotting skin and how she had been “eternally damned” to roam the earth. She refused to eat or drink water since she was convinced that some of her body parts were missing. Ms. X eventually gave in to starvation and soon passed away.
Ms. X’s sad story showcases the delusion’s three stages: Germination, Blooming, and Chronic.
In the germination stage the person suffers from a psychotic depression and hypochondria. From that point, the person descends into the Blooming stage, where the full development of the syndrome begins. They start to negate their body of food and water while being tormented with the smell of rotting flesh.
The last stage is the Chronic one in which full severe delusions and chronic depression begins to distort’s the person’s view of the world around them. Some patients have reported having strong feelings of depersonalization, loneliness, and out of body experiences. They simply don’t know if they’re alive, dead, awake, or asleep.

CULTURAL PROBLEM?

Does culture have anything to do with Cotard’s syndrome? Do beliefs in Zombies, Djinns, or even Donald Trump contribute to the onset of Cotard’s?
Some researchers are throwing the idea out there.
There was a case in which a female patient believed to have been killed by a Persian folklore creature named “Aal”. The patient OOBEhad developed all three of the stages of CS after suffering from complicated grief and psychosis. She also reported being able to leave her body and walk around the living world. Also known as an Out of Body Experience.
But it’s also not restricted to just religious beliefs, death, or folk lore.
In Asia genitalia retraction is a delusional fear that affects both men and women. It’s known as Koro. A delusion in which a person is convinced that their genitals are shrinking to a point in which they simply vanish. Koro has been seen more in male community therefore giving it the nickname the ‘shrinking penis syndrome.’

Strangely enough, when the authorities reviewed the hours of footage, they noticed something even stranger about Bergmann. It became apparent to the investigators that the old man had pre-selected his routes to avoid being recorded by the CCTV lenses that keep a constant look throughout Sligo.

They fast forward the tape and another day goes by with Bergmann leaving the hotel with a full bag of his belongings and him coming back empty handed. All while he manages to be seen by security cameras for brief moments at a time.

Where did Bergmann go every day? What was in the bag? The investigators scoured through a plethora of CCTV footage and nowhere did they find where he had dumped his belongings. Or what routes he took as Bergmann chose streets with the least amount of surveillance.

On his second day in Sligo, Bergmann bought $0.82 worth of stamps and airmail stickers from a postal office. However extensive search yielded no information as to what he did with the stamps and stickers. Did Bergmann send a final correspondence to someone?

On his third and final day at Sligo, Bergmann hailed a taxi and asked to be taken to the quiet and peaceful beach at Rosses Point. According to the driver: ‘He got out and had a look at the area and seemed contented. And got back into the taxi and returned back into Sligo itself. He didn’t really communicate with people. He didn’t mix with people.’

On his last day in Sligo, Bergmann checked out of the hotel and purchased a one-way ticket back to Rosses Point. Footage shows him leaving with the same purple plastic bag he left with every morning as well as two suitcases. The same ones seen during his arrival.bergmann3 Bergmann arrived at Rosses Point and went to a cafe and purchased a sandwich and a cappuccino. Cameras show the man eating alone in a contemplative state.

Some witnesses then put Bergmann on the beach. Again, alone and looking engulfed in a world of his own. They saw him wading through the water at the beach. He had rolled up his trousers in the ankle-deep water. Someone else saw him later that night, they only stated that the old man waved and nodded at them.

When dawn came, Bergmanns’ lifeless body was discovered by a father and son who were out on a run. They remembered seeing the body of an oddly dressed man who was obviously not from the area.

The inspection of the body revealed that Bergmann had cut or removed the labels from all the articles of clothing he wore. As if to conceal his own measurements. When an autopsy was performed, investigators learned that there was no evidence of salt water drowning. No evidence whatsoever of an kind of foul play. However they did discover that Bergmann was in a stage of advanced prostate cancer and his body was riddled with bone tumors. There was evidence the he had also suffered from multiple heart attacks throughout his life.

As investigators dug and traced all evidence of Bergmann in Sligo, they came to the realization that Bergmann never really existed. No records matched a man named Peter Bergmann.

The only thing that the authorities were sure about was that Peter Bergmann was a person that did not exist in the United States, South America, or anywhere in Europe. It was a made up name, just like the address he used to check into the hotel. It was traced to an empty lot somewhere in Vienna, Austria.

He just wanted to commit suicide without his family finding out. Not really paranormal.
