You experienced sleep paralysis. This, along hallucinations is something that everyone experiences before falling asleep. Mostly people are unconscious at this point but looks like you somehow kept your consciousness to that point. When you reach it your body is gonna feel like paralyzed, and you may also get a feeling of being unable to breathe, however this is all in your head and you shouldn't worry about this too much. If this happens to you again, you can easily get yourself out of it by relaxing and trying to move starting with your fingers.

I think I opened it up a couple years ago without knowing what it was and it lead to a massive freakout. I actually blacked out and don't remember a lot of it, but I woke up in a hospital. Since that experience, there's been a few times where I've been close to opening it, but I stop myself so I don't have another freakout.

I didn't even know what Kundalini was until yesterday in a mediation thread someone said I might be having Kriya when I said my body spasms when I get deep into meditation. I also feel like energy is rushing through my body when this happens, especially in my right shoulder (I think there might be something wrong with it, it almost feels like there's a miswired connection in the energy or something). I read up on it on Wikipedia, but I'm hoping someone here will have a better guide for it or just some advice. I have a lot of the symptoms of "Kundalini Syndrome" so I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track of what's happening to me.

Anyway, one of the main reasons I decided to make this thread is because when I was meditating last night, I'm pretty sure I started to connect to this energy in a different way than I normally do. It felt more "proper" I suppose and I didn't feel like I was going to have another mental breakdown from it. It was a weaker connection, so not much happened other than some really deep meditation where I felt extremely connected with the universe. What's weird is that while I was meditating I had a vision of a snake and when I woke up today, I was exhausted and it looks like all of my fingernails have bruises under them. To be fair, this happened after I read up on Kundalini, so it might be some kind of placebo effect. Since I read that Kundalini is represented as either a Goddess or serpent, people feel the energy on their fingertips, and this can cause fatigue. I also read that when it's represented as a Goddess, it unites with the Supreme Being and you become engrossed in deep meditation and bliss. I actually didn't even consider the serpent concept, I was actively thinking of Kundalini as a Goddess. There wasn't any information on what happens when it's in its serpent form, though. So what does it mean that I envisioned it as a snake?

You understand that most people who achieve this kill themselves?

Not particularly, you might not have control over what happens after you commit suicide. The soul purpose we come to this realm is to learn and better ourselves under one cercumstance: you can't commit suicide. If you do, you broke the promise and can't "pass on" so you'll have to reincarnate at some point. Even if you haunt your place forever, you'll never be able to leave this reality until you reincarnate and live a full life of learning.
