Akateko is a Yokai of the forest, the hand of a child and his mother. The hand of the child is red and it hangs from the trees. At the bottom of the tree from which the hand hangs, hover the apparition of a woman who lures to her the children who she witnesses. It is believed she wishes to trade the life of a living child to return her own.

The mistake in question, is detailed in her first diary, that is when she began writing of voices. Ikumi would engrave her wishes and desires on trees, she never dared to do so inside Aokigahara in fear of desecrating spirits, but there was a time when she was very upset, and wished nothing but for everyone to die and let her be. She inscribed it on a tree, but that tree was a Kodama, the spirit of a tree and of echoes. Cutting the bark of the Kodama is like to seal a deal, you are cursed, but the curse is lifted if you find a way to compensate Kodama.
The Kodama are very jealous, and the Kodama of the area outside Aokigahara are especially jealous- Wishing to be a home for many other spirits like the Kodama of Aokigahara are. Ikumi had an idea, she would trap apparitions within a lantern of bamboo, and release them with the Kodama outside the forest, fulfill his wish.
Unfortunately, Ikumi's heart faltered, she had grown full of fear as she bound spirits to the lantern. That is a very forbidden act. She left the lantern there in the forest.

In her diaries, she details how the voices of spirits she bound ravage her mind, assaulting her constantly with thoughts of death and fear. She speaks of the way she communes in her dreams, and how she wishes it would end.

>Again she wrote, day and night, I did not interrupt, mother was asleep still, and I began being at neighbor's home more and more
