"Who is this?" she asks, but he hangs up again. She dials 911 again and says, "I'm scared. I know he's out there, he's watching me."

"Have you seen him?" the dispatcher asks. She says no. "Well, there isn't much we can do about it," the dispatcher says. The babysitter goes into panic mode and pleads with him to help her. "Now, now, it'll be okay," he says. "Give me your number and street address, and if you can keep this guy on the phone for at least a minute we'll try to trace the call. What was your name again?"

"Linda."

"Okay, Linda, if he calls back we'll do our best to trace the call, but just keep calm. Can you do that for me?"

"Yes," she says, and hangs up. She decides to turn the lights down so she can see if anyone's outside, and that's when she gets another call.

"It's me," the familiar voice says. "Why did you turn the lights down?"

"Can you see me?" she asks, panicking.

"Yes," he says after a long pause.

"Look, you've scared me," she says. "I'm shaking. Are you happy? Is that what you wanted?"

"No."

"Then what do you want?" she asks.

Another long pause. "Your blood. All over me."

She slams the phone down, terrified. Almost immediately it rings again. "Leave me alone!" she screams, but it's the dispatcher calling back. His voice is urgent.

"Linda, we've traced that call. It's coming from another room inside the house. Get out of there! Now!!!"

She tears to the front door, attempting to unlock it and dash outside, only to find the chain at the top still latched. In the time it takes her to unhook it she sees a door open at the top of the stairs. Light streams from the children's bedroom, revealing the profile of a man standing just inside.

She finally gets the door open and bursts outside, only to find a cop standing on the doorstep with his gun drawn. At this point she's safe, of course, but when they capture the intruder and drag him downstairs in handcuffs, she sees he is covered in blood. Come to find out, all three children have all been murdered.

Sometimes I dream that I'm put into a situation where I have to commit an atrocious crime like recently one in which I had to kill an entire family with my pocket knife and then to make the dream even worse it continued on to me having to clean up the crime scene and experience all the sickening self-loathing associated with the whole process.

before i get into this, i want to reiterate that i was gifted/cursed with this "ability"; there was no "try", only "is". as such my experiences and more importantly perspective and understanding seem to drift a bit from most of what ive read out of others. obviously i can't really say how "good" or "bad" this may be; i suspect i may be at a disadvantage because i lack most of the training and possible safeguards that someone who did this "properly" would accumulate, but on the flip side it would seem that i don't really have the durability/longevity concerns and am much more acquainted with myself simply because i have no choice, for me there is no off switch. the scary thing is im not sure if i would even take one if given at this point, because the dreams can be illuminating and informative, and i seem to have a penchant for challenges and have almost fetishised the suffering. call it stockholm syndrome for simplicities sake. and of course its not all "bad", and furthermore to a large degree it is what you make it.

"control" is an idea.. a very layered one, and also an illusion. you will never have full control over every detail, and the gaps will have to be filled in somehow, from somewhere. this is where your sub/unconscious comes into play. this is basic and obvious, but i think the key here is that if you are lucid, you have a degree of understanding in real-time/the moment that doesn't exist if you are not lucid, and with this comes a sort of responsibility. you KNOW what you are seeing is ALL YOU in one form or another, but since only part of it is conscious, you are in a way playing both observer and participant, never fully one or the other.

by now you should be beginning to see the potential problems if you haven't already. shit that you have buried or tried to (usually for good reason) WILL show up eventually. your fears, your losses, your regrets, your guilt, all of it will manifest in some form or another.. (1/?)

.. usually in one of most unnerving/devastating mosaics or composites you could(n't) possibly even imagine. on top of this, things can (and probably will) get meta, in a hurry. no surprise since your dreams are informed by your life and who you are, but now increasingly your life can become indirectly influenced by your dreams. think of it as a very abstract and asymmetrical feedback loop. i suspect this might be where some people start to tap out and quit and some begin struggling as the lines between reality and ""fantasy"" blur, but i have not had that problem. yet. for reasons that are maybe personal/specific that im not sure if i should get into, since im not sure what the lesser/greater evil here is.

speaking of lesser/greater evils, and my own personal experiences.. well. lets see. this part ill just go full stream of conscious. the other anon mentioned tragedies/traumatic events and not being able to stop them; theres definitely a lot of that. lots of lose/lose situations. lots of betrayal. never ending guilt. the guilt is usually even in play in dreams that are otherwise "good", as if i know im unworthy on some level. i run into characters that KNOW they ARE characters CONSTANTLY, coming in all manner of forms and embodying different characteristics; this is one of the few things that shit movie inception actually got right, for me anyway.

at this point ive almost entirely stopped trying to actively control things in the dreamscape. i just go with whatever feels right in the moment, and let things happen. this in a way is its own type of irony and torture because in reality ive lost a lot of that control, partially by my own doing and poor decisions, and while i fight to regain that, where i already have a lot of it, i choose to forfeit it. almost as if i know or feel on some level that this is wrong, and i shouldn't be entitled to "ruin" the dream, so i mostly just watch and play my part.
