In the homepage I can monitor the data used for downloaded and uploaded MBs and I can see upload increases by a few KBs every minute, so it seems to work but download is absolute 0

Notepad++ (free and begginner's friendly but the interface could be a pain once you get into other stuff like laravel, ajax, jquery, meteor etc think windows paint vs photoshop)

Sublime Text (easy to learn and the design is pretty great to look at for long periods of time but it's not free - most people on web design use this one imho)

Vim (free, with hundreds of plugins/themes and 2 times faster than others but it takes ages to learn how to use properly check the video below it's a seminar from harvard about vim)
